1. Musicroom.com, sheetmusicplus.com and lemur music all have the pieces for purchase as well.
2. Have a look for Rossini's duet for cello and double bass. It's great fun for two bass's.
3. Going to try get to the Dan Styffe class. Ive been listening to his solo work and its really interesting. Well worth checking out.
4. I generally try and bar a finger across the 2 notes. I've found that quite often the lower note is slightly flat so that's something to work on. I also now and again jump with the same finger down to the note but it's generally more difficult i've found. Trying to use two different fingers going from an F to the C directly below requires a massive turn of the hand especially if you have to jump back up. Not many people are going to notice the change in tone during very fast passages apart from yourself so baring is defiantly a really good option. Mozart passages come to mind. Also if it is a very fast passage you'll be using far less left hand pressure so as long as you get the note i wouldn't worry too much. How fast are we talking?
5. Anyone ever see these little buggy things people pull the kids around in attached to the back of their bikes? I was thinking maybe one of those and a couple of those stretchy ties holding it down. Im moving further away from my orchestra this year so carrying a bass is starting to look like a bit of a nightmare this year. Like on of these bad boys. looks like it comes with straps and everything http://www.amazon.com/InStep-Single-Bicycle-Trailer-Green/dp/B002QAZ8WC/ref=sr_1_2/182-4760188-7703618?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1377876837&sr=1-2
6. There are methods were you use all 4 fingers like electric but um best to stay away unless you find one of the few teachers. 3rd finger is used in thumb position instead of your pinky.
7. I laughed then looked down at my DB. My stomach did a bit of a roll at the thought of it......
8. I've ordered some all weather as well from the states of all places. Second time trying, first time nothing arrived.
9. Whats wrong with your current bow that you want to improve upon? A carbon fiber bow may be better but you need to know what you want to improve.
10. Hardcase and tying it to the roof?? Maybe not...
11.
It's hard to believe those guys died so young. I had Live at the Village Vanguard on in the car today and the stuff La Faro was doing was just stunning. He clearly had his bass set up with very little relief though and sadly I think the recordings suffer a bit because of it. Musically though, wow.
It sounds stunning on 180 gram vinyl.
12. The finale is supposed to be really good. Google Jason Heath and finale and a video will come up were he comes th finale to his $3500 bow. Mind he has the most annoying voice in the world. I have a yita music carbon fiber bow off ebay. Nice bow to get going with and about £100. Its gathering dust now as i upgraded but im going to keep as its a light and quick and good as a back up or for cramped little folk gigs if i ever need to bring a bow.
13. Gary Karr. Doing whatever it is he does......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuKYI12gVW4 Maybe a tad under rehearsed but brilliant and a sense of performance which not many soloists offer the audience these days. The accompanist is brilliant i think. My favorite conductors that ive played under have always had a bit of showmanship which means the audience is also entertained while listening and i think this has led to the best performance's of the orchestra's ive played in.
14. Belcanto's wouldn't be the best for pizz work, but the A and D do work well with the E being to dark and not enough response for straight up pizz work. But i'd take the over any D'addario Strings, hated all the one's ive tried(Hybrids and their orchestral string not kaplans). I do want to try the kaplans as a bowing string though.
15. Ive found that having them on my bass but removing them twice for repair work has changed there sound a bit and not really for the best. I'd get a new set if i were you and go from there.
16. I've got a load of books i dont use anymore. Good for beginners. J.S Bach for unaccompanied Double bass Suzuki 3 and 4. Just bass parts Yorke solos for double bass and piano. Volume 1 Time pieces for double bass vol 1 I have simandl which i shall keep for ever. Too many important little scribbles and hours spent going through exercises to throw that one away.
17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynkHKQONnqQ Never heard of it before.
18. I play it in similar positions but with more dynamic difference. I think its important to turn exercises into pieces of music. Generally in a more Italian style of making the highest note the loudest. Considering as well his solo repertoire is quite operatic at times i feel you can also be a little bit free with the tempo. Not crazy but slow it down to build it back up.
19. seems to be a very popular one to play. This ^ ones a bit messy.
20. Oooh. I might just fly for the Dan Styffe masterclass, presuming its more on orchestral then solo.
21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVbCzwhWIMk This is the only youtube version of the rand duo done properly with two double bass's. Not very good quality though. Rinat: With violin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpcIfoujVP8
22. His elegy was the first solo piece i tackled after Verdi's rigoletto. I don't think i'm ever going to have it perfect even for a piece that isn't to challenging. Maybe we should together a list o the best bottesini recordings for learning purpose's. Tom martins Elegy defiantly stands out as one of the best. Also anyone heard his opera??
23. Too much music over here too. Really enjoying the Hrabe and Bottesini exercises at the moment. And a dirty great pile of the real books which i now and again delve into. I've ot the Rufus Reid book as well. Didnt enjoy it too much but never finished so i should probably give it another go.
24. I went for Belcanto's in the end which are really a bowing string but you can get a reasonable pizz sound out of the a,d and g. Im thinking of changing to something that is as good bowed (as i really bow most of the time) but with a lower tension as the belcanto's on my bass can really take it out of you. Not much use i know.
25. Found this as well while doing some more research. Bass's either side of the stage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jjSqhuY4DU Im wondering how periodically correct this is??
