I've got a set of Yamaha HS-80s which I bought second-hand off here. Great active monitors and I use them all the time, in fact I've mixed and mastered my bands latest album on them in conjunction with using a set of Beyerdynamic DT-880 headphones. So a big thumbs up from me for the Yamahas. I've also just splashed out on a Focusrite Saffire Pro24 DSP which is an double pre-amp with several monitoring options built in for mixing and mastering with headphones.
You're right. Logic Studio comes with all of the Jam Packs built in. I only really use the drum loops myself; I don't have the means (or the skills) to record live drums!
Me too, I'd love to have a go at recording live drums but I just don't have the room - or the understanding neighbours. I get away with my 5150 cranked up pretty loud, but I think if I had a drum kit going full pelt in the house, not only would the cats have heart attacks but the neighbours wouldn't be too impressed.

Depends, if its just drums you want, then I'd recoomend Beta Monkey drum loops. Lots more variation, cheaper and they're recorded by a real drummer in the studio. If you're going for all the keyboard, guitar and bass loops too, then I'd see if you can get a copy second-hand.

Got the Rhythm Section Jam Pack and its pretty good. Sound quality is excellent. I only really use the drum loops but there's many guitar and bass loops in there. I think they're also compatible with Logic if I remember rightly. The only trouble is I've found that if you find a particular set of drum loops that sound good, there just isn't enough variation. Minor gripe if your only using them for one or two songs. There's also plenty of midi loops which, if you have a decent sample programme you can really get some good variation going.

Is that the price in the bottom right hand corner of the tag ?

Kent Armstrong Vintage Hot pickups take some beating. Probably the punchiest P-bass pickups I've ever used.
Do they still do those curries in little boxes? They were ace, I loved 'em!
The only curries before or since to have raisins in.

Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 Firewire Audio Interface
WHUFC BASS replied to thebrig's topic in Recording
I've only been hearing good things about Focusrite so I'll definitley be investing in either a PRO24 DSP or the PRO40. Not sure what the software is like to use, but it all seems pretty comprehensive from what I've seen on YouTube. -
Love it. Captures the fire of the bands of the time, but with a more up to date feel. . Just great punk power, I'd love to hear it through a hi-fi, will figure how to do that eventually.
Thanks for the kind words mate! Much appreciated.
Hopefully attached is our effort for promoters, 1 track of 5 track CD (warning, old fart rockers alert). The mix sounds great through my old Technics hi-fi, yet absolutely crap through my laptop. Ideas gratefully received.
Nice overall sound, but if you want some constructive criticism: 1. I found in places that the tempo fluctuated. Maybe an idea to get the drummer to play with a click-track. 2. Guitar was a touch quite - both rhythm and lead 3. Bass cut through very nicely, just needs to be less busy in places and it will improve the song no end. 4. Vocals were on the whole very good, just could do with coming up in the mix slightly. Aside from that, not a bad effort at all... reminded me of Bad Company in parts.

I quite like that, reminds me of early Deep Purple in places. Quite a blanced mix although for some reason the crash cymbal sounds over compressed. Good mix apart from that. Our effort from our first album...

Thanks for the additional comments. The drums were actually put down on one track as they are pre-recorded live drum loops. I would love to separate and give separate eq'ing to the bass drum, snare etc. but this is how they came. I'm really hating the guitar sound as much as everyone else and will definitely discourage the guitar player from using his multi-fx on future recordings. He's a really good guitar player - exceptionally good rhythm player too so its a shame he isn't doing himself justice with a guitar sound like that.

Focusrite Saffire PRO 40 Firewire Audio Interface
WHUFC BASS replied to thebrig's topic in Recording
The Saffire PRO24 DSP is also a good choice if you need something slightly cheaper. It includes their Virtual Monitoring Software which looks pretty decent, two heaphone sockets with comfort reverb for recording vocals etc.. -
Thanks for the replies fellas. The guitars were recorded though a BOSS multi-effects which as mentioned really doesn't do it for me at all. I'd much rather mic up a valve amp and get some natural drive from the valves but this is what the guitarist wanted. I take you point about the vocals too, on reflection they are a bit loud.

Never try and educate and idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you from experience. You should have just told her that having just listened to her comments she could find gainful employment as a train buffer as clearly, stopping trains with her head was about all she was useful for.

What set-up do you have at home in regard to PC MAC or laptop ?? You'll need some sort of interface to allow you to record. There are several options out there but I'd need to know what you have in the way of computer. Also, how much are you willing to spend and are you likely to be doing this sort of thing often?
akg but you should never mix purely in headphones. only really usefull for fixin bits.
Yep, dead right, you should always cross-reference with some decent studio monitors.
I didn't think headphones were normal for mixing on, mixes tend to come out sounding bass-light on regular kit.
You need proper studio headphones to mix on as they give an uncoloured, true sound. Something made by Beyerdynamic such as the DT770 or DT880. The AKG K240 II or Shure studio headphones are good. They may cost a bit more, but they're worth it.
-
Not sure what monitors you have but they usually recommend that they are positioned away from walls and especially corners. Headphones may be a better option ?

You 'll probably hate the song but I though I'd ask anyway. I'm playing bass on this and have mixed and mastered it in my home studio. Guitar sound isn't really to my taste but our guitar player likes it so not much I can do. Can you give me any pointers to how the mix could be improved is it needs it...

You'd be surprised how much better a bass guitar will sound when recording with a new set of strings on.

Audio Interface for recording a minimum of 8 Channels at once?
WHUFC BASS replied to thebrig's topic in Recording
I think I'm gonna be going for the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP, check it out. The different mixing environments sound really interesting, mostly because I'm going to be exclusively working with headphones (KRK's) Si
Thats exactly what I'll be getting this or next month. It looks superb - two headphone outputs too which is handy. The Pro 40 sounds good too. The M-Audio stuff gets a hell of a lot of bad reviews and their customer service is pretty dire by all accounts. -
I think because there are so many DAWs out there ti would be difficult to tie it down to using specific software, but I think some tips on how to get the best sound from an amp, best way to mic up amps, drums etc. tips on recording vocals etc. Also, not sure I can speak for most and I'm wawre of the fact you have a studio, but for many home recording bods some tips you may have for them ?? Just some pointers. Possibly some tips on mixing and mastering too ?? By the way, what software do you use to record ?
