I didn't think headphones were normal for mixing on, mixes tend to come out sounding bass-light on regular kit.
You need proper studio headphones to mix on as they give an uncoloured, true sound. Something made by Beyerdynamic such as the DT770 or DT880. The AKG K240 II or Shure studio headphones are good. They may cost a bit more, but they're worth it.
2. Not sure what monitors you have but they usually recommend that they are positioned away from walls and especially corners. Headphones may be a better option ?
3. You 'll probably hate the song but I though I'd ask anyway. I'm playing bass on this and have mixed and mastered it in my home studio. Guitar sound isn't really to my taste but our guitar player likes it so not much I can do. Can you give me any pointers to how the mix could be improved is it needs it...
4. You'd be surprised how much better a bass guitar will sound when recording with a new set of strings on.
5. PM'd.
6.
I think I'm gonna be going for the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP, check it out. The different mixing environments sound really interesting, mostly because I'm going to be exclusively working with headphones (KRK's) Si
Thats exactly what I'll be getting this or next month. It looks superb - two headphone outputs too which is handy. The Pro 40 sounds good too. The M-Audio stuff gets a hell of a lot of bad reviews and their customer service is pretty dire by all accounts.
7. I think because there are so many DAWs out there ti would be difficult to tie it down to using specific software, but I think some tips on how to get the best sound from an amp, best way to mic up amps, drums etc. tips on recording vocals etc. Also, not sure I can speak for most and I'm wawre of the fact you have a studio, but for many home recording bods some tips you may have for them ?? Just some pointers. Possibly some tips on mixing and mastering too ?? By the way, what software do you use to record ?
8. Yep great idea. Gear recommendations would be good too !
9. Oh yes, but could get away with a 4 string tuned B-E-A-D.
10. My nephew had a Westfield Stingray copy as a first bass. Horrible thing it was, sound was garbage and the action was like a bow and arrow. If it were me, I'd get a second-hand Vintage by JHS bass - stingray copy or Jazz. they're great instruments.
11. It wasn't directed by this fella was it ?
12. Not at all, I use Logic and on the rare occasion Garageband. Never used Reason simply because of how good Logic is.
13. That's a big improvement. The vocals could do with coming down a bit though, they just seem to drown it out a bit. Also, not criticising your singing, but I'd give it a bit more aggression in there. Imagine some dirty bastard is trying to chat your missus up whilst his pet elephant is standing on your foot.
14.
If you want all in one interfaces the M-audio stuff is also pretty good in my experience.
I'm looking for a Firewire interface at the moment and have been checking out the M-Audio stuff. Some of the reviewws say that it has extremely unstable drivers for both MAC and PC (this is the M-Audio 410 and other models). Also, their customer service by all accounts is a joke. The best ones so far that I've read reviews of seem to be made by either Focusrite or MOTU.
15. Guitar sound needs to be bigger - a bit more high end on the rythmn parts and higher in the mix certainly. bass could do with coming down a bit too with a bit more mid-range on it. Drums don't sound too bad though.
16. A Traben or a Warwick Rockbass Corvette. Two great basses for not a lot of money.
17. Love it mate. Brilliant song. Great lyrics too...
18. Did you use monitors to listen to your final mix or headphones ? I've noticed that some headphones make mixes sound good especially though iTunes but on other mediums it sounds bad. Also, iTunes seems to even out some bad mixes where other players like VLC are much more organic.
19. Bought a US Jazz bass off me a while back. No problems at all with the transaction.. nice one.
20.

Ha ha... check out the gig bag made from your old man's pyjamas
21.
I would have thought drying in the oven would solve any rust issues, but I haven't tried it yet, tbh.
I used to use a hair-dryer on mine.
22.
Thats a good idea, hope he has a sensible reserve on it. Let us all know when its up for auction. Can you ask him if he went to the Electric Ballrom gig i mentioned and if he remembers it? (The Ramones / The Boys / Ten Pole Tudor)
As mentioned, the gig where he got the actual bass was The Roundhouse in Camden. I do know that he went to the Electric Ballroom a fair bit in the late 70s - early 80s. Here was there when the notorious riot took place at The Cockney Rejects gig.
23. Spoke to the singer today. He's taking it down to Sotheby's who have said that it should sell for quite a sum. As mentioned, there's a fair bit of history involved with that bass.
