Was dragged along to the The Stray Cats recently at the Shepherds Bush Empire. Don't really like Rock 'n' Roll to be honest but I tell you what, they were top notch. I really really enjoyed it. I'd go again definitely.

Traben - Like and old Volvo, Big, built like a tank and you wouldn't want to have a head on collision with one Fender - Ford Saloon, bog standard you know what you're getting Ibanez - Mitsubshi hatchback, reliable, great value but just a tad "generic" Sadowsky - Lexus, just a tarted up Toyota, overrated. Wal - Jensen Interceptor, British, well made, big bucks and sought after Warwick - BMW, popular, well made, not everyone's cup of tea, those that've got 'em, love 'em, those that haven't hate 'em. Alembic - Rolls Royce, well made, pretty, status symbol but just not really functional for dropping the kids to school Squier - Skoda Octavia, cheap but amazing value and design overseen by a quality company Yamaha - Volkswagen, well engineered, good value just not liked by everyone. Gibson - Citereon, why oh why do they bother??? Some eccentric people like the 2CV despite its obvious faults (Gibson Thunderbird) but apart from that, garbage. Spector - Porsche, have a great reputation, the higher end models are a bit of a status symbol, very well made.

I suggest you listen to a few songs by Crass, Slayer or Venom and get some inspiration from them.

Go for a Traben Chaos John Moyer Signature or a Yamaha TRB5, both have wide but slim necks. Both very comfortable.

Bruce Foxton - Even More Of A Genius Than I Thought
WHUFC BASS replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
5. Man In The Cornershop
The Jam's finest moment IMO I saw Foxton on numerous occasions when he was playing with Stiff Little Fingers and he was superb. Really great. -
I've just bought an identical looking 5-String Chaos Core with the Aguilar Pre-amp. Really nice playing bass and compared to the John Moyer Signature I've just bought its got a slightly mellower, warmer tone compared to the John Moyer which sounds like a Stingray on steroids. The Rockfield pickups really are underatted bass pickups and there's no way I'll be swapping mine any time soon. The Chaos Core is really comfortable to play but doesn't balance well when played sitting down. Lighter than the John Moyer Sig its got a slimmer body and slightly slimmer neck. Straplocks as standard on mine.
Not in West Ham perhaps, but everywhere else it Natural law and criminal law down't always agree Chris
the bloke is in wrong when you cut to the chase, no two ways about it. What can he do? Call the old bill? Maybe, but you can argue that technically its yours because you've paid for it. Take a copy of the bank statement to prove you've paid for it If he come across all shirty then you (if thats the way you operate) call the police and tell them the story. Be sure to bring aforementioned bank statement. If him and his mates gang up on you and threaten you then you can unleash hell on him with the mates you've brought down in the transit van who have been drinking Jagermeister like their lives depended on it. In the words of Erroll Brown - "Everyone's a winner baby" (apart from the thieving f***er who nicked your guitar). Oh, and Mrwaynepunkdude, yes I would be proud of him getting a kicking, so you can put that down in your little black note book too - file it under "I don't give a f***.

Find out when they're playing next. Go to gig. Take his bass (if he leaves it on stage)...and say you are keeping it until the money is returned to you. Technically not theft. You could pay him a visit. Sometimes people pants it when you confront them face to face. This happened once when some joker thought they could rip me off for a guitar I'd paid for.
Haven't had any yet - but I did ask WHUFC for a support slot with one of his bands.
Ha ha... you'd love it. Bring a crash helmet though... We've seen our fair share of violence in the past, one memorable gig saw around 100 Flemish and French speaking Belgian skinheads kicking the crap out of each other just before we went on. After they got nicked there was another off in the middle of our set. Another night the promoter asked the singer to tell the crowd to stop fighting to which he told the promoter "f*** off c***, who do you think I am? Jimmy Pursey or something?" quality night. Played in Finland and saw two Finnish skinheads virtually demolish the venue and everyone in it. They knocked one of the bouncers out who came round, got up, cs gassed one of them in the face and proceeded to smash the granny out of this head-case. After playing in Sweden last year we had a set-to with a load of Polish Nazi (yeah work that one out) skinheads who don't like us very much at all due to our singer taking on a load of their mates one drunken night. There's a picture of him floating about with a boot mark on his face somewhere.
Reminds of another frustrating practice habit that he can't overcome despite my repeated fairly gentle 'hints'. Between each number we have the shuffle of paperwork (he doesn't learn his lyrics and needs a music stand with chords and words), the playing of random chords and much tuning where everyone has to be quiet despite his inline tuner. We are always waiting around for him. Given a gig he's the same, very amateurish imho.
Thats a pet hate of mine. People should sort their sound out before the start of rehearsing and after the first song, levels and sound should be sorted out. I can't stand people playing in between songs, especially when you are trying to talk to a band member about something and you're getting drowned out. Even more so at gigs. Playing randomly in between songs at gigs is just plain unprofessional. Drummers are notorious for this.

My music appearing in a film! (A Bit Of Tom Jones)
WHUFC BASS replied to Ray's topic in General Discussion
Nice one mate. The engineer who is going our album at the moment recorded the music for the band who did the music for this ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpYxlc0kUiY Believe it or not, this was recorded live at a gig. -

Mental stuff... in a good way though.

Thanks for the replies fellas, some real good info there. I'm going to have a go at this, and see how I get on. I really begrudge paying money for a set up when really I should get my arse in gear and learn how to do it myself.

You'll all hate it I promise...
Mmmmm 4 Skins maybe but I wouldn't want to argue with Hoxton Tom, even now!
I was talking to him the other night as it goes. A real gent and a real good laugh too. He's got some really interesting stories from way back when.
Shoot me down here - but is the process of setting up made to look more complicated than it actually is?
Thats what I'm thinking. Its just I've never really been confident to do it before, especially the truss rod adjustments.

Something that I've always thought about but never actually learned is how to set up my own basses. I've been playing for a hell of a long time and just ignored to an extent this subject but now I reckon its time I did my own setting up. One small problem, I don't really know how. Is there anywhere that a humble bass player can learn to set up his own basses? I would gladly pay for someone to teach me how to set up my own bass, rather than pay around £25 each time I need my gear set up. Anyone?
