Shipped from the U.S. with customs charges it cost me £250 which I believe in the ancient words of the virgin Mary "is a f***ing bargain my son".
 2. They're horrible things. I wouldn't even give a fiver for it.
 3. If it stays at that price it'll be a good price. The singer from my band has got Dee Dee Ramone's 1974 Precision bass in his house doing nothing. There's actual footage kicking about of Dee Dee throwing it in the crowd at a gig in London and my mate grabbing it. Never played it though, I might ask him to bring it to the next rehearsal and give it a bash.
 4. Thanks fellas much appreciated.
 5. As per the title, does anyone know where you can buy single strings rather than having to buy a whole set? I've got some 4 string sets kicking around but as I've only got 5-string basses, they ain't much good without the low B. Anybody got any ideas?
 6. Thanks fellas. Looks like I'll be going down the EMG pickup route with the possibility of an Aguilar pre-amp (all depends on price). When its done, I'll post up "before and after" tone comparisons.
 7. I recently got a Spector Legend 5 String and I love the feel of it but the EMG HZ pickups are to coin a phrase "sh*t IN THE EXTREME". I just don't like them. They are the most bland sounding pickups I've heard in a long while and I want to replace them. Any suggestions? I play punk / hardcore / metal music. I've given up waiting for the Seymour Duncan Bass Blackouts. I've emailed Seymour Duncan and not recieved anything back from them. Any other suggestions as a direct replacement? was really looking for active pickups.
 8.
If somebody asked you to wear 'any old crap', how many of us would actually decide wearing red tights would be a good idea in the first place?
I would but only if I could wear my red stilettos, hot pants and sequined boob-tube as well.
 9.
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/interviews/...o_era_back.html Seems Gruber just did the demos and the album was Geezer. That's what he says anyway.
Thats a good interview, hadn't seen that before so cheers!
I want my bass to sound like the whole of this track: Geeeeezzzzzeeeeerrrr!
The cover of that album is quite funny. The story behind it goes that they went to that photo-shoot and were told to wear any old crap because they were going to doctor the photos later with costumes as there was no time to hire a wardrobe consultant. Anyway, whoever did the album artwork wasn't told that this photo was to be touched up after and just went ahead and released it. Bill Ward was fuming as he was wearing red tights! Another great bass sound... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUx_bk0jCvk
 10.
you may be right, the SR series is more of an all rounder. it'd still be excellent for death metal IMO, but perhaps the ash bodied SRX series would work better? really, its about trying stuff out and seeing what works for you. theres been plenty of people recommend ibanez, but you might find that when it comes to it, you wont like it.
The SRX definately sounds more suited to punk / hardcore and metal to be honest than the mahogany basses. Even my old thunderbird was a good bass but for the sound I wanted to get it just didn't have the bottom and mids of swamp ash and alder.
 11.
I kind of hope it was Geezer as I love the playing - and tones - on those 2 albums. Die Young is superb, rock bass at its best.
Me too. Geezer was and still is a huge influence on my playing. The first real bass player who's style I latched onto.
 12.
Well at the time he was using a US BC Rich Eagle with all the electronic gubbins ( I saw them on that tour). Not sure whether he used it on the album. No idea what amps he was using at the time though. I'm just trying to regain the tone I had in 1993! There's no one tone I'm after. It all depends on context.
There's rumours that it wasn't actually Geezer Butler playing on that album as he went on the missing list for a while. Not sure how true that is but there ya go.
Behind the wall of sleep/NIB. Now thats a bass tone to die for and is the only reason i picked up a bass in the first place, even though its took me many many years to pick up a bass, each to their own.
Thats an easy one, get a 60s Precision, a Laney guitar cab with three blown speakers and a Laney guitar head. Honest, that what he used on the first album. I read and interview with him and he said he hated the sound at first but so many people were asking him how he got such a great sound when the album was released he sort of came to like it. I think his tone on Fairies Wear Boots is great.
 13.
What I'm getting at is, if your parents christen you Thelonius Monk, do you automatically aspire to be a jazz musician?
As long as they don't christen you "Harry Monk" you can be whatever you wanna be.
 14.
+10000 definatly the ibanez SR505, absoutely fantastic bass, and with its really thin neck it shouldn't be a problem to play fast.
I always found that the Ibanez and mahogany basses in general lacked the real bottom end of ash and alder basses. Fantastc wood for guitars but for basses (metal basses anyway) I never really liked them.
 15. Personally I'm of the view that for 97% of your average scenarios you don't need it. I've been playing for a long long time and did lots of deps for bands playing all styles of music. Never was I asked to read a chart which, to me, was a bit confusing as I was spending a lot of time learning to read as I thought its what I had to do. I've come to the conclusion now that I'll never need it and as such don't bother with it anymore. I'd rather spend the time learning stuff that I'll be using for everyday playing situations. Unless you are a top session player, part of an orchestra or an in-demand dep player you'll rarely use it. I'm not saying its bad to learn music but I'd rather spend my time on something I'd use more often in my current band situation. With the internet and the numerous tab and transcription sites you'll rarely if ever need to use it to transcribe stuff. My personal advice - don't bother, just keep learning to groove and train your ears. Now ear-training is a whole different kettle of fish and highly recommended IMO.
 16.
Can I make a case for Link Wray? Especially 'Rumble'
Excellent shout, my favourite track by him is Jack The Ripper... 17. His finger-style playing is often overlooked but he has come up with some great basslines.
 18.
London is smelly and sh*tty and the venues are worse than the toilet scene in Trainspotting, but yeah everybody seems to be in a band there. Disillusionment of great times past? Whereas York is absolutely beautiful, much nicer.
Yeah but its up north and thats just plain wrong
 19. why do all rock-a-billy songs start off with the word..... WEEEEeellllll.... ??
 20. I f***ing love picking my nose. I'd say its almost my favourite pastime. If I stick my finger up there and there's an especially juicy specimen up there, I like to leave it up there and just fondle it occasionally. My missus pulled out a bogey the other day when I was driving and it had a hair through it which she proceeded to wave in front of my face. I was jealous as f***.
 21. Traben or Spector basses do the job admirably. Monster tone from the Traben, real high output and great grinding sound. Spectors too, very versitle and comfortable to play - personally I prefer the neck on a Spector to an Ibanez SR505. Thats just me though.
 22. Thats because the Spector Legend uses the Tone Pump Jr preamp which is basically just a treble and bass boost (no mid-range and no cut). Some people love 'em, some hate 'em. The more expensive Euros and USA NS basses use better electronics but cost a lot more.
