Played in school jazz band at 16. Did a lot of jazz and pit work whilst at Uni. Joined a country band at 19…first paid gigs.

Yup…this was a rescue bass in pretty rough condition, brought back and now is a joy to play! Still have an issue to sort out with weak signal from the bridge pickup, but doesn’t stop it from sounding great through the Trace rig.

First country gig in about 40 years depping for Stevie Daniels at The “Rooster” in Warrington. Great pub, easy load in, happy dancing punters and complimentary drinks. Low ceilings made the mix challenging but got mostly sorted. Lovely time with some great guys.

“Modern” country can be all over the map, from straight pop sounds to allusions to old School country to country rock.

Super heavy touch for the style, plus really busy in lead-ins… not much space for anyone else imo.

I would not be thrilled to play with that drummer…

Yup…lots of choices for hard cases. I also prefer gig bags…have a Gator Go Pro that carries everything I need for a gig or rehearsal.

No regrets, but I would like to have my 63 Jazz back….

Actually, I'm kinda with you. However, I see conversations all the time (not on THIS site, of course..:)...), that suggest that many bassist can hear the tiniest of differences. Just wondering how they do that.... For the record...this was my MPV5, 50/50 on the pickups, Flat on the tone, light gauge Elixer Nanoweb nickel rounds, played over the 24th fret: Trace GP12SMX/400SMX set "seagull" EQ, no pre-shape and the bass compression at 50% 60/40 tube preamp. 4x10 cabinet.

Okay...I thought this might be fun. Use 30ish seconds of a tune from a gig or rehearsal, and we will guess what rig you are using....bass, amp, cabinet, effects (if any). Okay...agreed. This is why I have a "5 minute rule". I have a bass easily accessible both at work and at home. If I have 5 minutes or so, I'll pick it up and do some mindful practicing...usually turns into 20 minutes of good work. This has cleaned up my playing a lot. I'm a person who used to play about 4 hours a day but won't ever do that again. My method works for me to help keep some kind of edge.

I also want to thank you for this brilliant review. I bought the same rig about 2 months ago, and am falling in love with it. When in the States, I used to play through a MusicMan head that also had a valve preamp section, and this often reminds me of that rig, although this one seems a lot more versatile. If I want 80's (or a good jazz sound), I'll use my Pedulla 5'er. For more modern stuff, it's a Yamaha active bass. The amp responds to both (although quite differently) beautifully. Well worth hauling the extra heft around, IMO. Well done on a very useful review!

I am not a flashy bassist. I stand in awe of you folks who can do some amazing 3 octave fill. I'm just too lazy at this point to work that hard on my scales and arpeggios...:)

I have a different background because I hold a music degree, started out in jazz, but like to play all kinds of music. Always loved country music as that’s what I grew up listening to, but also classic rock. I still enjoy playing jazz, latin and funk but don’t slap. I really don’t enjoy real book based jam sessions. I do like pit work, but haven’t done it for a while. Guess I’m an educated hick at heart.

Great band sound, and I really like the tone you’ve getting as well…
