  6. I’m not in the same camp as the “ I can get any sound I want out of any bass with my pedals” guy. I’ve never found an emulated sound that matches what I can get out of any of my basses plugged straight into the amp. You can get close, but it’s like an electronic keyboard vs a grand piano….close but not the same. YMMV
  7. Kind of subjective to me. I played Fenders for decades, but none now. My Yamaha is close enough to a FSO for most, the fretless is Spector shaped, and the MPV is the only outlier…but I don’t care….:)

  9. Well said! I currently use : different basses, and they all have unique looks and personalities..but they all work beautifully in every context I use them in.
  10. I get that…have a friend that plays one of those single cutaway coffee table sixers. It’s ugly to me but I wouldn’t let that stop me from playing it.
  11. I wish I could make this a survey question… I personally don’t care much about what my gear looks like. I’ve made out like a bandit rescuing other player’s abandoned and slightly beat up gear. I also would probably not consider playing a jazz, folk, or country gig on upright knowing I can produce an acceptable tone on my fretless Spector. I do, however care a great deal about how my kit works and sounds. Not being judgmental, just curious…where does the collective land on this subject?

  16. I would not change much. I probably would have started getting into gigging here a lot sooner. Starting from scratch without any connections at 67 isn’t ideal. Fortunately, folks have been very accepting so….just not a lot of gigs to be played.

  19. The first few examples show alternative chords, as has been well covered. I would ask the pianist what chords to follow…nobody else will know or care. The chord symbol with the slash like Dmaj7/B indicates that you should include a B somewhere in that section, preferably on the downbeat.
  20. 1. My Fender Dual Showman….it just works for the music I play right now. Both bands I’ve used it with rave at the tone. 2. Rumble 200…just should not sound as big as it does. 3. I used to have a little Traynor 1 x 12 combo amp…great little practice amp.
  21. Somewhere around 1200 seems about right. I had an RD Artist in the ‘80’s…cracking bass, but check to see if the neck needs reset.
  22. After Being lifelong 4 string player, I switched to 5 and find it almost universally better, mostly because you have easy access to 2 octaves. Amongst othings, that lets me play up the dusty end and still have good access to the “money notes”.
  23. I believe I’d be okay in most situations, but would definitely keep it simple until I had an idea of what was going on….space is your friend on these kinds of adventures.
  24. On the NE2, I start flat, then adjust as needed. This is assuming no FOH sound engineer.
