  1. When you compare high end basses to top of the line other instruments I find basses relatively cheap. Admittedly other instrumentalists don't have to spalsh out on amplification like we do - but when you consider a professional flute will cost you between £5000-12000, the price of bass seems reasonable.

The flautist may not have a dozen instruments and never ending GAS though :D

I quite like these basses from the demos I've seen. Two questions here would you consider a trade plus cash and where are you located?

Hi. I'm based in Upper Norwood/Crystal Palace, South London.

Thanks, but I'm after a straight sale really. I need to recoup some funds after splashing out on another instrument. I've thought about trades, but there's nothing I really want at the moment - well maybe a Wal or a Vigier :D

  3. I have a NBD coming soon with a high end fretless coming my way....

....so regrettably I have to sell my lovely Godin A5 SA to pay for it. It's in excellent condition, sounds lovely with a monster tone. The 3 band eq preamp is fantastic and I've found this a versatile instrument in jazz, acoustic music and salsa.

It's a 34" scale five string with fret lines and dots on the top edge of the fingerboard. Spruce top, maple neck and ebony fingerboard. It has the synth access din plug next to the jack output for connecting to a Roland guitar synth if that's your thing.

It comes with the Godin gigbag (a really nice deluxe thing) and I have a box so can post if required, but collection is preferred. Postage will be a bit extra, but I will charge at cost. In the past someone has strung this with roundwounds and there is some very faint scoring on the fretboard. This can be seen, but not felt. Running my finger across it I cannot tell it's there.

    Price is £750.

  4. Sorry, had to pop out to pick up the kids!

Playability wise it's fantastic. I cannot fault it and it has a great "acoustic" sound and resonance. It's pretty lightweight too.

Plugged in, I don't think I've really found its sweet spot yet. When I got it I had the pots and cap upgraded (maybe I have the wrong cap for the bass). I've had Nordstands in it and currently have Lindy Fralin PUs in it and I'm still working it out. TBH I have nothing really to compare it to. My other Jazz is the all ash/maple JB75 reissue - that has Nordstrands and a John East preamp and sounds like a totally different beast - a very modern "Super Jazz" type tone.

I may experiment with a different cap and/or different brand of strings with the JB66.

I'm looking at it now. It sure is pretty.....

  5. I would say go for something that's going to be familiar. If you're used to J basses, go for a fretless J. Ditto for number of strings. It's quite a different beast to fretted.

I play Js and Stingrays. My first fretless was a Godin A5. Lovely bass, but I still haven't got used to it. Since I got a fretless Jazz I've been so much more at home and would be happy to go out and gig with it. Any gig but a reading gig - I don't yet have the confidence to play without looking down from time to time.
