Good to have a recommendation on the NJ4s. The Octabass is all good but when I tried it out I had one of those "we're gonna need a bigger boat" moments - to paraphrase Roy Schnieder from the movie Jaws. There's an interesting green "stripe" that runs between the two woods that I haven't seen on other Stattii. I'll try an get a close up of it later. The MM is an awesome bass - I bought it from BassBalls on here earlier this year. It's got a fantastic neck and just oozes character. I've always blown hot and cold on the Status. After playing the MM extensively the Status sounds clinical and sterile, but it's a great bass for improving technique on so I practice on it a lot and get back into it. I used to have a Series 2000 in the late 80s which I forever regret selling. The Jazz is getting there - I also bought that from a Basschatter. I really don't like the pick-ups on it that much so it's going to have a Nordstrand update soon. There's a killer bass in there - I've just had to strip out all the rubbish bits. My amp at the moment is a Phil Jones Flightcase and while it's good, I don't think I'm hearing the best of what any of them have to offer. I'm getting a GB Shuttle soon and then I'll be on the hunt for a Bergantino or Epifani 2x10.

I've got a bit of a thing for the "natural" look Left to right: 1989 Status Series II; 1992 EBMM Stingray; Fender Jazz CIJ '75RI with Marcus Retro and Gotoh bridge; 1977 Fender USA Precision.

It reminds me of the star shaped bass that Bootsy Collins has. Only Bootsy's bass has character and is strangely good looking next to this howler. It isn't a late April Fool's joke that they forgot to take down from the web site?

Hi, Has anyone used/is using their EBS Valve Drive with a T-Rex Fuel Tank Classic as a power supply? Does the Fuel Tank provide enough power to the Valve Drive? The Valve Drive requires 12V AC 500mA but the wall-wart that EBS supplies it with provides 1000mA. The Fuel Tank Classic provides 12V AC 500mA. I'm not so up on electrical issues. Is just enough, enough? Or does the Valve Drive benefit from the beefier power supply? Thanks, Derrick

With them in, I hear my sound through the bones in my head more than my sound traveling through air to my ears, and it makes my own sound even louder and unpleasant. I hate playing with earplugs - it changes the way I hear and the the way I play, but it's very necessary with some of the bands I work with. I've never tried using the earplugs with bass yet as I don't gig on bass that much. As it's an amp making all the noise and not your physical self I'm surprised - I'll try it myself and see if I notice the same thing. I'm just about to get a pair of those ACS earplugs. They work but reducing the db level rather than blocking out sound. Other horn players I know who have them speak highly of them. I'll post back when I've receive them and have gigged with them and let you know what I think. They take about a month to be made so it wont be until the end of May. After trying everything else (including the obvious one of trying to get the band to play quieter) I thought I'd give them ago after I got thinking about all the (tens of) thousands of ££ I've spent on instruments and studio equipment over the years but only a few quid on protecting my ears.

What's the difference between Fender MIJ and CIJ? Is the CIJ reserved for reissues? Are CIJ instruments better built? Or is it just a marketing thing. Thanks, Derrick

The problem with most tutor books is that they're almost exclusively aimed at kids so will tell you a lot of what you already know (and in quite a childish way). DVDs tend to try to hard to give everyone something so can be of limited use whatever stage you are at. No, get a tutor and save the guesswork, frustration and risk of developing bad habits before you really get going. What make and model alto did you get? A decent mouthpiece is an absolute must as most mouthpieces supplied with saxes at any price point are rubbish. But what's right for you is a personal choice. Again a tutor can assess you and advise on what will work well for you.
