Yeah I don't blame you for waiting. Something else I've found is that the scrolling through the named presets automatically turns the C4 on which might not always be ideal (but can be turned off if holding the left button down before scrolling through in the device number Preset menu). There's probably a solution buried in youtube videos/manuals/menus somewhere but my patience and motivation is wearing thin! It's these sort of hassles that a few month ago would have me returning these pedals (I had already owned a C4 and returned it). I think (hope) it'll be worth it in the end though, the C4 does make some excellent sounds and it's worth having an additional controller to access them.

No, thanks to you and @lee650 for helping me to re-consider! I was in two minds about selling this before being able to test how good the Helix compressor is, the credit card can take a hit rather than raising all the cash first. I think the FEA will be good to keep (£220 worth vs using Helix compressor though?!) especially for the extra switch for the sidechain as I've found that's really useful to have on when playing a bass heavy clean signal to play deep low dubby stuff where I don't want the lows compressed too much but can then click that off to get more compression on the lows when using things like synth and filters if the lows need more taming. Perhaps there's a way of doing sidechain compression on the Helix and quickly being able to click it on/off but I doubt it'll be as good or straightforward as doing it with the FEA. ....this does mean that the Helix isn't seeming like such a good cost saving option as I'm gradually deciding to keep more pedals it was supposed to replace!

Cheers, that sounds good. I'll get a Stomp without any expectation of it replacing my whole pedalboard: Selling my Tuner, Compressor, EQ, Preamp/DI will cover costs, so as long as it does a decent job of replacing them then that's all good. They aren't pedals that need turning on/off much and are a bit more 'set and forget' so I hopefully shouldn't miss the hands-on control too much.....and it has the benefits of routing options and amp & cab sims and IRs that also don't need much switching control. I could see me using most of the blocks just for those things so think the Stomp XL might be unnecessary for me as I'll keep most of my separate effects pedals to put in FX loops which hopefully means not wanting for additional controllers.

There is a video of what the Beta version does https://www.disasterareadesigns.com/dmc-beta but that just starts at the point of it already having been updated on the pedal, further down the page is the Beta version file and I got information about updating the device from a different manual somewhere on their site (I can't see where it is now as their link to the manual on the beta page is broken) basically you need to re-name the downloaded Beta file to the same name as the one that appears on the device- then delete the old file and drag the new file onto the device. Bear in mind they say "WARNING! Use of this beta firmware is fraught with peril and may result in anguish and uncertainty. Proceed with caution." I don't disagree, other than perhaps to change the word 'may' for 'will'. I then needed to watch this video for connecting with a C4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxEGIKOU_1U Further down that Beta page has a link to the preset renamer, the help screen of that is useful- you need to set the DMC from hub to to midi for it to be read by the renamer (and then back to hub to work with the C4). ....it then took me a few more steps as I was also re-numbering/naming things on C4 Neuro to match the DMC names (and Neuro keeps freezing and crashing for me) and was also sorting out the alt controls which need the corresponding C4 CC values mapped to the DMC- there's information on how to do that in the C4 and DMC manuals, it works but I'm not sure I've got it set up in the simplest way. The C4 'skip power' thing had been checked so I'm not sure why it still occasionally doesn't recognise the DMC if they are both turned on at the same time but I'm giving up for the time being as I've found a temporary fix of just unplugging/re-plugging the DMC. It's a faff for sure, worth it eventually though!

Nice one, I'll track that down.

Good luck! The faff of firmware updates and midi mapping etc is something that's put me off digital pedals (at least the ones that have midi/usb and need updates etc). I spent about 3hrs getting the DMC micro firmware updated and settings all correct for the C4 and naming presets and assigning the alternative CC controls...turned it all off and next time I turned it on they wouldn't talk to each other! Seems sorted now though, digital pedals probably are the way forward once it's all set up but I nearly threw them both out of the window at one point!
-
I have and it works- although I am finding that I sometimes need to power up the C4 first and then the DMC or they don't talk to each other...which is a bit of a hassle needing to remember to unplug/plug in the DMC each session. I'm not sure if that's the fault of the DMC (perhaps the Beta version has bugs?) or the C4 though.
-
I got the DMC micro (no the pro) as it looked like the display is a bit bigger and brighter and saved £50 and figured I'd just need to remember the numbering rather than naming presets - but the latest Beta update means that you can name your presets on it too, winner!

I had a Helix Effects with the mindset that it was replacing effects pedals and being used in a traditional 'one-footswitch per effect' type way, but when I compared them directly it didn't quite cut it against separate Fuzz, Octaver, Envelope Filter, Synth so I returned it. My new mindset is that the Helix Stomp is best for me as it will replace the 'always on' type pedals that don't need so much clicking on/off and hands-on control (selling Tuner, EQ, Compressor, DI will pretty much cover the Stomp cost,) and I'll keep the effect pedals that I'm picky about and want to be able to control with individual footswitches and knobs. But now to confuse things I'm considering if the extra £166 for the Stomp XL is worth it....if the Stomp isn't something I'll use as a replacement pedalboard 'one switch per effect' type thing then extra footswitches probably aren't needed, but have Stomp users found that they really do need extra controls? Is it just frustrating to only have 3 switches (even if it's not to replace your whole pedalboard)? I think I might get frustrated with it and want to buy extra controls - in which case it seems going straight to the XL is an easier (and possibly overall cheaper) option. £566 starts feeling a bit steep though as I'd only just convinced myself about £400 for the stomp!

If anyone needs a sales pitch: Fully Parametric EQ means you can dial in a very specific frequency (more so than with graphic EQ which have set frequency points) and select the 'width' of that frequency (graphic EQ pedals just have fixed width, and semi-parametric EQs don't include it). Also, Parametric EQ is less 'noisy' than graphic EQ pedals. "Parametric equalizers are capable of making much more precise adjustments to sound than other equalizers, and are commonly used in sound recording" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equalization_(audio)#Parametric_equalizer If no takers here then this'll go up on eBay (where there is a 4 week wait to buy for £169 new) by the end of the week.

The XL is now £566 at GAK, that's more reasonable. It's hard to match that cost by buying Stomp and controllers separately. .... Or the Helix Effects + Two notes torpedo cab sim adds up to about the same.

Yeah I had real trouble noticing any difference so was quite pleased when it was confirmed I wasn't losing my hearing!

The original Mojo Mojo switch does very little. This from talkbass: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/tc-mojomojo-bargain-for-bass.1347512/page-3

A bit off topic but I like Octave into Envelope Filter but the octave tracks best with a compressor before it and envelope filter sounds best with compressor after it to tame peaks. Buying two compressors seems excessive but Helix can do it and includes 2x fx loops of separate pedals for re-routing, and can have parallel/series routing options (eg octave and filter running parallel is quite different to series) these routing options are the biggest selling points of the Helix pedals for me rather than its in built effects.

I had the opposite with the EHX Bass Clone in that with certain pedal chain/loop settings there was a massive volume boost (but it was fine with others). I couldn't figure out why and no-one else has been able to explain it but I think perhaps can there be phase issues where the chorus is cancelling/augmenting....that was my theory anyway.
-
Cheers, I'd heard of the 8 slots and threats of atomic wedgies for complaining it doesn't have the power for them but didn't know about the Y cable 2x loop thing so that does change things a bit.

Anyone here with experience owning the Core yet? I'm in the market for a £400 Stomp, but GAK now have the Core at £535 so am considering if that's worth the extra. I'll be keeping a few separate pedals and would use the unit for more of the 'always on' type things (like EQ, Preamp, Amp & Cab sim, compressor) to avoid needing too much tap dancing fx on/off or additional midi control. I see Stomp has more Bass amp & cab sims but the Core has a lot more block spaces and I like the idea of more than one fx loop as I'd keep filter and synth and octave as separate pedals and have the option of putting them in different parts of the signal chain e.g. Boss core comp>separate octave pedal>Boss core EQ>separate Filter pedal>Boss core amp/cab sim Could be useful (and other options like putting the filter pedal first etc). Keeping a few separate pedals also gives that on/off fx footswitch control without needing additional midi controllers. Also, I like the additional controls on the Core, and perhaps Boss build quality going to be better. Most importantly though that's difficult to know without using it - how does it sound compared to the Stomp? There don't seem to be any YouTube comparison videos which strikes me as odd as it must be something anyone buying one or the other probably considers... a gap in the market for YouTube hits for anyone motivated enough!
-
Another thing with the stomp downsizing: I might eventually go all out and also sell my Bass amp and cab to get an active PA speaker that the Stomp amp & cab sims would hopefully make sound good.
-
@Naigewronis there a reason you kept the tuner on the board? Is it so that stomp switch can just be used for other things?
-
It's fine to be used as pedal with the 1/4 jack in/outs, the usual amount of hiss that you'd get with an overdrive pedal if you turn the drive up high. I'm not sure there's actually anything wrong with the XLR either: There was a thread on TB with someone saying their XLR from their DHA hissed too much but the response was that it's a grounding issue of the thing it's going into.

Cheers, yeah I fully expect that not long after I sell it I'll get the itch to buy another one in a year or so - this is my 3rd one! One was much more black than the other two so they have definitely had different paint jobs over the years but more purple = more funky (even though they sound exactly the same).

Edit- sale withdrawn. Tuner: Korg Pitchblack Mini. £40 Perfect condition, only a couple of months old with home use. Boxed (will add photo of that later). Twickenham pickup or postage at buyers cost. I'm selling a lot of Pedals (Pictured below, each has their own advert) so can do discounts if you're buying more than one.
