Stop Nuisance Neighbours Closing Venues Petition
TimR replied to ezbass's topic in General Discussion
Forgive for being a bit cynical what exactly does this achieve? It say "At 10,000 signatures, government will respond to this petition" What sort of response? Thank you we'll have a look at it, meaning Now f*** off so we can make some money with our property development friends... And "At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament". That doesn't actually mean it will get debated, and you can be sure that even if it does it will be by and handful of backbench MPs late on a Tuesday evening when everyone is ready to go home...
Seems fraught with difficulties to me. Someone would/will have to write a very careful law that takes into account current levels of 'nuisance noise' being created by the venue and then once any development takes place, demonstrate that the level of 'nuisance noise' has not increased. Maybe venues should apply for some kind of licence to make certain amount of noise between set periods of times. If it's not done carefully you'll just get any old pub playing this card against its neighbours anytime it wants to make a noise. "You moved next to a pub, what did you expect?" Personally I think bands are too loud and getting louder and the 24hour licences now mean pubs can be playing extremely loud music at midnight when previously the noise would have been less intrusive and stopped by 11pm. It's all going to boil down to what the level of noise is and how long it's been going on previous to the development application. -
What if the place is more than half empty, wouldn't you want to save all the upbeat popular stuff for when the room is full. If the room never fills I guess it doesn't matter. Blue
We've been known to play the same song twice. Only ever had one person comment. And they liked it.
I played Sultans of Swing 486 times with my last band - each time the set opener. Settled us down if nothing else, and everyone knows it.
Good choice.

Are we playing music or trying to kill the audience?
-
Something that many bands agonise unnecessarily over. I don't think anyone should be playing tunes they think are bland anywhere in the set. It doesn't really matter what tune you start with but it must be 1) Intersting for the audience to listen to and get their attention. 2) Played faultlessly. Bear in mind a lot of bands will use their first song to set levels as the place would have been fairly empty when they do their line level and basic mix check. So if the sound isn't working properly you need to still make a good first impression. You can't do this is both the sound is off and the playing is out.

There's a lot of water in that bath! I think you should have added some Matey. And some candles.

Obviously the article is satire, The Mash being a satirical news site. However, they're quite often very close to the point. Why does the band have to be so loud!? Obviously I enjoy live music and play in a fairly loud band but I've had to leave some pubs at half time due to the volume. We're often rebooked along with comments along the lines of "You're not like a lot of the bands we have in, you can play at a sensible volume." Surely there should be somewhere in the pub you can stand and chat and still hear the music without alienating your audience?
its such an unnatural feel that intro, never quite got it, just fall into it...
Hendrix didn't even play it that way live. Watch some videos and he's very careful to count the drummer in properly. My guess is that in the studio he came in at the wrong time and the drummer realising Hendrix wasn't going to move does a clever switch to pull everything back. I've played with quite a few guitarists like that. -
Do we play bass guitars the wrong way round?

I'm right handed but I've found out I can scratch my right elbow much more effectively with my left hand. -
Or Neil Young
Quite. Or maybe Bob Dylan? Just play it properly without Hendrix's mistake. -
Maybe starting off playing the violin set it in motion as they don't seem to do left-handed ones.
Left handed violin would be interesting in an orchestra. It's bad enough when people are bowing out of synch. -
Metallica with cliff in the band played donnington in 1985 also
I'm quite surprised how early in the 80s it all started. I certainly don't remember them being on my radar until '87

Signed up to my university's jazz orchestra, what have I done?
To be honest, I'm not sure. I can read sheet music without a problem, but I have never tried to sight read
You should be able to get the sheet music in advance and take it home. You'll find that a hell of a lot of it will just fall under your fingers. As long as you know your scales and chords the notes will be fairly obvious. -

My guess is this is one of those errors that they decided not to bother going back and doing again. We've never played it like that and I doubt anyone in the audience would ever notice. It's not exactly a crucial part of the song. I worry really about people doing covers sometimes. Well, I don't, but you can spend too long agonising over them. -
Er, it's not.
I think this thread could be interesting to see who reads the actual link and who just replies to the text in the post.

I'll never understand why people have to compare bands over the ages. They evolve, it's music, we should all evolve otherwise we stagnate. I've been following Merallica since Donnington '87? Arguably the very beginnings of Thrash Metal in the UK? The bass solo in the OP is a master class in why people shouldn't play bass solos, very technical but surprisingly lacking in substance. The bass 'solo' in the intro to the other post is much better, short and to the point. There's a great video on YouTube of the Rob Trullio audition. They compare him to Cliff at one point. He is definitely the man for the job. Metallica don't need to worry too much about their image now, they have a massive and loyal fanbase who love the music and most of us are either approaching or over 50 years old. http://youtu.be/aB0iuRnSjKU
I'm afraid this is very true: http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/society/sight-of-band-setting-up-strikes-fear-into-drinkers-hearts-20160930114664 No-one want's to hear a live band now unless they're go on to do a proper DJ set or they're Cold Play?
Ha. The Mash go off the boil every now and again. I dip in and out but that's one of their better ones.
I must be doing something wrong, I've never even had one woman go topless at a gig, never mind that many!
I'll send you some numbers for some "South coast" gigs.

Just reading into this following a post in another thread. How do you decide how much the PA residual value is when 'buying out' or 'buying in' to a band? Do you just go by second hand market value of get an independant valuation? I'm not sure I would want to 'buy in' to a band PA. I'd probably ask for some kind of projected value and just have a few quid taken off my gig money at each gig.

Things To Think About Before Joining A Working Band
TimR replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
To a certain extent , I think this is OK - the singer is the focal point of the band and 99.99999% of the time, all the average pub audience is actually listening to. If they don't like the song, it'll be immediately apparent in their performance to any discerning audience, it doesn't matter if the band nails it, if the singer ain't delivering, the song will be rubbish, IMHO.
That's correct up to a point. Our singer won't even listen to a tune he's never heard before as it'll mean he would have to learn it. When I pointed out that the rest of the band had to learn all the other tunes, he replied, "but you're musicians, it's what you do". -
Things To Think About Before Joining A Working Band

Probably not a question but, I'd be looking at their web presence. Facebook, Website, YouTube. That may then lead to a whole host of other questions. I'd also ask about the setlist and whether it was regularly refreshed and kept up to date with current music. I'm happy playing old favourites but I'm finding more and more younger people want 'something they know'. While they do actually know Beatles and Stones, they do want to hear something more modern as well. How early do you get to gigs? I'm ok with an hour and a half, any more than that when it's their choice is a bit of a no no. If it's a wedding that's requesting it, then that's a different matter, but don't want to get to gigs ridiculously early and hang around waiting to go on. . -
I've played gigs where fights have broken out, people have been accused of stealing the charity box, drunk 50+ women have gone topless, etc. I just thought it weird that the person running the evening didn't seem to want us there and hadn't really made any effort to contact us to cancel. There are some strange people about. .
