What's going on with the bodged bit of chockie block going off to that Jack?

Yes. I was just expanding on what you said. I thought your response was relevant which is why I quoted it. I wasn't disagreeing. Maybe I should have added a +1 [edit] have now altered to clarify.
Glad you like it! Although the flaw in your idea about driving the speakers better with the full wattage from the amp is that each speaker will be receiving less power. A single speaker at 8 ohms will get up to 200 (ish) watts, whereas two cabs at at 4 ohms will be getting 150 watts each!
+1 Also: By adding a 15" you will be getting double the volume. By stacking on top of the other you will 'nearly' double the volume again in the lower frequencies. So for the same volume setting on your amp you will be getting 4x the volume out you did before. You'll be driving your amp a lot less. But you will also probably get a much cleaner sound because it's unlikely that the 15"s are now anywhere near their excursion limit. As was said earlier I have always found that adding a different type of cab either 2x10", 4x10" or even another 1x15" will alter the response of the system. It will certainly be more powerful in the lower frequencies due to the stacking in close proximity. You will probably hear more mids too which are punchy and will cut through. There will also be some "random" frequencies cut where the two cabs cancel each outher out and it seems you have been lucky that they sound good.

Art, gamble, exercise in futility. Whatever you want to call it. It's never pretty.

It's now called "View New Content" and there's a whole new host of options to filter it.

Mixing different cabs is an art.

Sorry, missed that it was a combo. I think that the addition of a 10" will be similar to the addition of a 2x10" as you won't be able to run the 2x10" at full volume anyway. I think you will also start to get funny filtering effects with half the current going through the 1x10" and the other half going through the 2x10"
-
I think in theory that the max power of the combined setup will be limited by what you can put into the 1x10. Assuming that the 2x10 is 4 times as loud as the 1x10 just by virtue of having two drivers in the same enclosure I'm not sure how much extra volume you'll get from adding the 1x10" and then having to run the amp at a lower power. Unless I'm missing something.
Played there a few times in the noughties. Was told by a mate who used to see the band that the best sound we ever had was at The Horn. Not sure what the parking is like these days, but you had to get there early to get one of the spaces next to the venue.
I think it's pretty safe on a yellow line after 6/7pm.

What's the name of your band and when are you on?
This is being sold to raise funds for a charity from what I can see and I,m sure someone out there'll have that kind of dosh for a good cause and to own one of the gedsters basses as this is the first time i've ever seen him sell one.
I didn't spot that. That T-shirt is up for grabs too, together with some sticks, a skin and a cymbal. Thought it looked odd that he'd only played it in one song on one night.

Pickups modified for enhanced low end?

Candy Apple Red, what colour scratchplate folks?

What ever colour you go for, if you go for a dark (black?) then I think you need the white edging. -

What colour are the controls, bridge and pickups? -
I'll probably come over. No pressure. Just rehearse harder.

It won't happen. It will result in lots of calls to the Environmental Health about noise levels and there'll be another proposal. I think it's the expense and the complexity of the licensing that's the problem, not the actual licensing. Although the current system was supposed to make it less complex.

I only try if I'm going to buy. Otherwise I often browse just to look at prices and models really. Strings always seem to be a nightmare no one has anything in stock. I'll buy them online.
-
Indeed. Why do you need to run them in Parallel? Assuming they are identical cabs you can run them in series. If not then you'll need to parallel them up and even then you might not get the results you are after.

No it was just a small local gig. About 9 bands in total. Just a small stage. I was just impressed with the whole set up. Especailly as there are a number of threads here where people complain about on stage sound and bad sound guys. The only band that suffered was the band with too much bass gear on stage
-
I was impressed by the soundcrew. They had is sussed and had all the bands requirements written down. We were the only band to soundcheck and it sounded pretty good out front. The rest of the bands were adjusted on the fly and sounded pretty good too.

It absolutely tipped down at the point where we were supposed to start. We ended up going on 1 hour late. Played to about 50 people who had braved the weather. By the time we had finished the rain had cleared and more people were arriving. The next few bands had pretty good weather. The 'headliners' played 3 from the end at about 8pm. I didn't stay but watched about 5 of the bands. Some pretty good, for a couple it was their first gig so I'm going to believe the organisers about the "good draw" factor we have. All played covers. I think that 50 people coming to watch in torrential rain is pretty good. Probably had a total of 250 people arrive as the afternoon progressed. Incidentally one band that had been recommended to me, and had the 5:30 slot, made a very bad decision. Their bass player bought a 15" and a 4x10" with two power amps. The band consisted of drums, bass, two guitars, keys and vocals. The sound out front was appalling. At the beginning of the last song the singer complained that all they could hear on stage was mush. That's pretty much all we could hear. The bass was bleeding into all the drum mics, the guitar mic and the vocal mics it must have been impossible for the engineer to control. I was surprised he didn't just walk onto the stage and turn the bass player down. Awful, ruined it and they probably had the best time slot as far as audience numbers were concerned. I'll try to bag their 5:30 slot next year My 2x10" was more than adequate for our on stage monitoring and most of the other bands were using 1x15" combo amps. We played a good set and the people that were there moved about a bit.

Playing a gig tomorrow. Nothing big, a few hundred people at an outdoor village gig. We're first on. I'm aware of how "well" we've played in the past and this is my 3rd year of playing. The organisers ask us back every year and the crowd and other bands seem to love us. We play covers. The event runs from 2pm till 10pm in 30min slots with 15mins between bands for changeover. I was discussing going on first with the drummer who sees it as a good thing. He says the organisers really like us and the songs we play. They know a lot of people will make sure that they are there right at the start to see us. Hence they want us to be the big openers. The crowd starts to diminish at around 8pm. I'd always seen it as "Stick them on first because we can put the better bands on later", however, looking back at some of the other bands/acts they have been very poor. I have quite high standards and although compared to bands I've played with in London, I think we're not great, we're definitely better than quite a few of the other acts. The headline act is a local celebrity/famous musician from the 60s and his band. I'm going to try and video the gig tomorrow to see how good/bad we really are. Since last year I think I have managed to drag the musicianship and performance of the other guys up a few notches. Thoughts anyone?
We've been toying with the idea of playing the first few bars of Stairway every three songs but never actually playing it.
DO NOT do this. Although you're not actually showcasing your band and may have no plan of playing covers again there may be other people there who are looking for a band and you never know what will come of it. Playing unprofessionally will make them less inclined to come and see you again even in your originals band. BAD IDEA. The guitarist's girlfriend's mum won't be impressed either, it's her 50th party, it's not an opportunity for you to goon around. Don't be tempted to try to get the keyboard sound. Unless you sample the original it will sound like a weak attempt. Stick to strings, piano, Hammond and Rhodes sounds. Even if you have a sound that sounds 'close' to the original, try it with one of the other 4. You'll be surprised and it will help to give the songs a personalised sound. I've heard far too many holiday camp/cruise ship type cover bands sound pathetic trying to get keyboard sounds "right" and get it completely wrong.

Which is more important, the amp or the cab ?
TimR replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
Majority opinion seems to be swinging towards cabs in this topic. Reflected on this a for a bit. Anyone else noticed there seem to be more threads discussing the pros and cons of amps than threads discussing cabs ? Just a thought......
I think people understand cabs less. They just go for a 4x10" or a 1x15" that will go with their choice of amp power. After all 10s are more punchy and 15s have more bottom don't they -
I've realised some important sh*t while I've been away from here ..

Eric Clapton was interviewed on the Formula 1 build up this afternoon. "It might not rain today and that will make it a great day. I can't stand all that indescision. You know, the tyres and all that. It's a nightmare. (The DRS rear wing, the CURS and all that?) No, It's all in here init really? <makes steering motions> It's just like this <makes guitar playing motions> All the boxes on the floor with the guitar, with the amp. Don't matter. It's in 'ere! <Shows hands>. Isn't it? You know that. Well actually it's all in here <points to head>" And that's from a legend who's been though some gear.
