What's everyone's albums of 2013 so far?
4-string-thing replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
The Way We Move by Langhorne Slim & The Law and Electric by Richard Thompson. -
I find it amusing that in a bid to find something new, the record industry found "folk" the oldest form of music there is! Mumford are a bit dull and repetitive (and definitely not folk or bluegrass) but so what? And by the look of this thread, it seems that BC has taken on the role of the British music press, ie, build 'em up then knock 'em down.
Playing with the strings the wrong way round. That's a talent I've yet to master! Paul
Same for him! Nah, to be fair, he's probably a good player, if you like that sort of thing..... I don't.

Yup, take the bass into work with you if possible, stops the possibility of theft or damage.

Is a defretted bass , as good as a fretless ?
4-string-thing replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Ha ha, I didn't say it worked, just that I used to do it But thinking about it, I only used it on two songs and there were no open strings. Nobody ever noticed my bass playing being out of tune anyway, they were too distracted by my awful singing! -
[sup]Good job it wasn't a Ric, or we'd never have seen it![/sup]

I used to play my lined fretless for a few songs, so at gigs I used to tune the bass slightly higher. This meant if I placed my fingers in the same position as when playing a fretted bass, ie, behind the "fret" I wasn't playing flat. I found it saved having to adjust from one way of thinking to another. -

I doubt your fingers would notice any difference, but your intonation would probably be a lot better! -

Car of choice for lugging gear
wouldn't you just love to plug the bass into that just to see how loud it goes
Loud, but we all know mixing driver sizes is asking for trouble! -

5 door Freelander, loads of room, looks nicer than a estate (IMO) and 4WD which is handy for festival gigs in muddy fields! Drawbacks, thirsty (petrol version is anyway) and hefty road tax! -

Moral Dilema - dropped from a recording
4-string-thing replied to Rainbass's topic in General Discussion
I'd mention it in a light-hearted way, you never know, if your mate is a competent muso, he may have even redone or added to your bass parts himself, and is a bit embarrassed to tell you. If some of the recording is you, you still deserve a credit. -
The other thing that seems to affect players perception of whether a given amp is "loud" or not is the taper of the volume control. I think makers do it deliberately, in the hope that less experienced players will turn it up to 9 o'clock in the shop and think "Man, that's loud, I've still got three quarters of the knob left" and buy the amp. Never mind that it probably starts clipping just past that...
Ha Ha, that's my old Acoustic 220, full volume seems to be at 9 o' clock, its pretty loud but anything over that and it doesn't seem to do much apart from add a bit of distortion (apparently, its supposed to be like that) Its only 170w but is actually about the same in terms of volume (loudness) as my 575w Ashdown into the same cab.

The good thing about tribute bands is that the gigs should be higher paid than your average pub band gigs (I was told last week by an Oasis tribute bands guitarist that if I joined their band, I would make a decent living without a day job) But the things that would worry me about this are, (1) that (a version of) Dr Feelgood are still gigging and are relatively easy to see. They played in a high school assembly hall near me quite recently, for instance. And (2) the prison haircuts and demob suits..... No reason to not do both though.
I agree about the 15-20 mins of feedback, very odd that and not very entertaining. We paid £35 a ticket which was good I thought and better seats than we got in Cardiff for Crowded House last year. Got those on TicketMaster "best available" which turned out to be at the top of the house parallel to the stage - had to be "worst available". As for the venue, the drinks were predictably expensive but I thought the 'merch' was reasonable - £25 for a T shirt, £10 for a programme etc. The story above about Neil out walking and talking with WoT's mate is fantastic - a moment in time to treasure for sure!
Not sure, but I think you have to pay a tenner to park at the NEC as well.....

My mate's a big fan and he was at the Birmingham gig last night, here's what he posted on his facebook page today: Hmmm...saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse yesterday at the LG Arena (formerly known as Birmingham NEC). First four songs made me think it was going to be the greatest gig I'd ever seen, but then he followed this with 15-20 minutes of feedback, which was very dull, and a couple of mediocre acoustic new songs, as well as a relatively pointless cover of Blowin' in the Wind. Thankfully towards the end it improved and he finished with one of his greatest songs, Powderfinger, but all in all, it was very hit and miss. Oh and the NEC are still money grabbing tossers and the venue's still a shithole

I briefly played in band where the guitarist was left handed and played a right handed guitar upside down without swapping the strings round.... Try following what he was playing!
snot baffling at all we'll put our own flavour to this one usually means i/we havent got skill/patience to learn/play/rehearse it faithful to original
Not always the case, I have the skills and patience (and so do the musicians I've been in bands with) to lean/play/rehearse/reproduce plenty of songs, but it's the last thing I'd want to do. I'm sure this is the case with a lot of people on here. . .
I answered an ad for a bass player and went along to audition. There was a few numbers for me to learn including some Lenny Kravitz and Foo Fighters stuff. I noticed the guitarist was playing the wrong chords in one song and I made the mistake of correcting him telling him it was E minor not major he needed to play. After the end they said to me "Well done! you really know your stuff, - why are you only playing the bass?" ....................Speechless!.............................
My answer would have been "It's BECAUSE I know my stuff that I play the bass"

I answered an advert last Friday for a "full time" tribute band who gig 2 or 3 times a week (some vey big gigs booked) I got a phone call on Saturday and after 30 minutes or so on the phone, got told I could audition in a couple of weeks with a view to starting with the gigs booked for he end of June (they're using a dep til then) "I'll email you a set list tomorrow" (Sunday) says guitarist, "learn as many as you can, for he audition and hopefully you'll know them all after a couple of weeks" Its now Wednesday, and no sign of a set list and he's not answered the text I sent asking what's happening. I don't care if it is a "pro" band, or the fact that I don't have a job at the minute, if people can't be ars*d to do what they say, then neither can I. This is supposed to be fun, so to the OP, if you don't like the songs and can't see yourself enjoying it, you did the right thing!
