Wilcos is more a wipe on varnish, Rustins is tung oil is a base that lets it penetrate. The secret is all in the sanding.
True..... no matter how smooth you think it is, as soon as you put oil on, scratches seem to appear from nowhere!
Rustins Danish oil is easy and gives good results, used it on all my stuff. Don't get Wilco own brand oil, got some for my doors and it totally sucks.
I think I actually used Wilko's own .... What a cheapskate I am! It was still better than the horrible brown varnish that the basses previous owner had used!

There are loads of different oils, but I think I just used linseed oil on mine and then a coat of coloron wax.... No doubt someone who knows a lot more about this kind of thing will be along soon to give you a more informed answer. You could probably google "oil finishing guitars" or something to get an idea of whats involved too. In fact, a quick google just threw this up... I have no idea about country, so can't offer any tips on what to play, but I did play in an "Irish" band for four years and I can tell you that people love that kind of stuff! After a few beers they go mad for it, so keep smiling, you never know, you might enjoy yourself!

I reckon oil and then wax is the easiest, apply it with a cloth, then wipe it off with another.... No messing about spraying, sanding etc. Looks the most natural and won't effect the sound (not that lacquer does either, least not that you'd notice)

I used to own a Behringer 32 channel mixer in my studio, pretty good sound, and reliable as hell..... regret selling it. After that I bought the 20 channel powered mixer, sounded ok but nowhere near as loud as the 1200w it claimed to be, don't regret selling that! Used a 4x10 in a rehearsal room once, sounded awful.... After a few minutes of messing about with the amp, I noticed that 2 of the cones were seperated from the chassis almost all the way around the driver! Can't remember what the amp was. In one of the other rooms there, they had a Behringer 450w amp through a Marshall 4x10 and TBH that sounded quite good. The amp looked like a rip off of the Ashdown mag.....

About 30 years ago, I bought an Acoustic 220 head and 404 cab..... have never worried about amp breakdowns, til now! I do carry spare fuses though.
Cool, everyone, cool... It's surely only old fogies like myself who remember Ashley Hutchings, or Jack Casady, or Danny Thompson, or...( the list is long...). There is no reproach intended (by me, at least...), in not having heard of, or being interested in, every so-and-so who has made a name (big or small...) for him/her self playing bass. There are loads that I've never heard of; there's no-one on this forum (or anywhere else...) able to name 'em all..! No sweat... Cool, everyone, cool..!
Ah, see now Ashley Hutchings and Danny Thompson are 2 of my favourite bass players.... My original post wasn't intended to be a criticism of anyone, I am sure Mr Miller, Wooten, and Curtis are all fine players (certainly all "better" than me) It was just a shock to see how much of the bass world had passed me by! -
Marcus. Luther Vandross. Never Too Much. EVERYBODY has heard that song!
Luther who? It sounds to me like these people all play a style, or styles of music that I would never listen to, so why would I have heard of them? I don't listen to music radio during the day, I only listen to folk-rock, prog-rock or 60/early 70's rock so I doubt that I've heard them without knowing it either. I don't read bass magazines, either.... I do admit that I may have seen them mentioned on basschat in the past though. And yes, I have heard of youtube, but why would I ever be bothered to watch a bass tutorial by someone like Victor Wooten, when I have no wish to ever play like him? -

Interesting thread, but can I just say that I've never heard of Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller or Rodney "Skeet" Curtis! Seriously.... I haven't. -
To be fair, when I used it on my cylinder head bolts, it probably only dissolved the gunge you get in the threads that makes the bolts stick, not the actual bolts themselves.

Hmmm... I did ask if it would work, not state that it would... It really did loosen my cylinder head bolts though...and I do seem to remember trying it with cheap cola first and it not working. Maybe you could try a kind of reverse chrome plating process? If I recall, electroplating is done by passing an electric current through two pieces of metal via an electrolite? The positive terminal is attached to nickel or whatever and this then (when the current is turned on) coats whatever is attached to the negative terminal.... You could attach your hardware to the positive and any old bit of metal to the negative and in theory, the chrome will come off your hardware and coat the other bit of old tin... I stand to be corrected on this by somebody who actually knows about electroplating! I still reckon leaving your tuners, bridge etc in Coca Cola overnight, will at least dull the finish and make them look old.
Correct. I'm using Co-op's own brand Diet Cola. Put the neck plate in at 1pm. Still in there now and has not made any noticeable change. Maybe my Co-op cola is too high-brow. Maybe some Netto cola would have been a better option?
I'm being serious here, but I seem to remember being told that it has to be Coca Cola......
-
I totally don't get this road-worn thing. I mean really, you get addicted to buying the same thing over and over again (and lots of GAS as a side effect), then you want to ruin the beautiful liquid inside to burn off the chrome on bass parts! What a waste of perfectly good Coca Cola!
We should point out that other brands of cola are available......
Coke is evil... And yet i'm still addicted to the stuff... May give this a go on some "useless bit of hardware" first, Are you guys saying that it will just remove the chrome plating leaving the flat / dull nickel look underneath? if so sounds like a good idea.
Maybe not try it for too long? A couple of hours at a time, til you get to the desired state?
-
Yep - coke contains phosphoric acid which absolutely loves chrome...
Yee Haa....I've actually contributed something that is both useful and correct! (there's a first time for everything)
That's not a failing on your part as a bass player, it's a failing on their part for not having the b*lls to be honest. Anyway, it's unlikely you'd be in the same band as me so what on earth have you got to dread?
I'd jump at the chance of playing in a band like yours again (probably) I was offered an audition tonight actually, but declined after seeing a set list..... I just couldn't ever see myself playing Valerie, Sweet child o' mine, Walking on sunshine etc..... (shudder) -

I'm in the same boat, so can see where you're coming from. I walked out of a band a few months ago cos I wasn't enjoying it (seems that they had a mate waiting in the wings, so they made things unpleasant for me til I left) I've taken a break and TBH, am thinking that maybe I should pack it in as well. I can't get enthusiastic about music at all and the thought of joining another band fills me with dread! It just seems like too much trouble and effort. As far as excuses go though, your bands sounds a bit lame, presumably they were happy with your playing when you joined the band, so why not now? You could do as some have said and take lessons or learn to read or find a band that plays in a more "loose" style, something musically different to what you've been doing. It may just fire you up again. But, whatever you do.... DO NOT SELL YOUR GEAR!!!!!!!! -
Has anyone played a MAG 600 EVO II head? I'm considering getting a cheaper head for gigging, but i've read reviews that they don't sound like their full wattage potential. It could just be user error i guess. The 300 is pretty popular on HC reviews and as i said above i liked the 4x10 combo (MAG 300) version i tried. I'd like the 600 as i'll be using an 8ohm 210 cab. The 300 might not cut it.
I've got the 600 and the 300 EVO 11 heads and they both sound great through my old Acoustic 2x15, not woolly at all. The 600 is quite a bit louder, despite many people saying that I wouldn't notice the difference!
