Bugger off and get your own idea!
I've been using my chord organ for a while in an Ivor Cutler kind of style..... without his keyboard skills, oh, and without his lyrical skills.....
I had a dream the other day that I'd formed a Steam-Punk band. The band were dressed in the peak of Victorian fashion and played punk and metal covers on old instruments, including a Harmonium. The next day one of my mates, who was in the band in the dream, said he was thinking of buying a harmonium! I had an awseome looking bass though, Carl Thompson-ish style with all darks woods and brass.
What a great idea for a band! I have a kids plastic toy chord organ from the 60's that does a passable harmonium sound......
Anyone remember Russ Ballard's Strat?? Probably not what you have in mind!
I think I read once that John Mayall did the same thing? Russ Ballard was the singer/guitarist in the 70's prog-rock band Argent! He did indeed write God Gave Rock n Roll to you, as murdered, sorry, covered by Kiss! Though I'm sure you all knew that really....

You refine your gear searching for THE sound
your vocalist says "I don't know why you bother with all that extra cr@p. I think it sounds great with your bass straight into the amp" GAH! Why do we do it to ourselves!? Constantly searching for that elusive sound, buying this, changing that, a tinker here & there, and at the end of the day bass 101 (a bass, a lead & an amp) often does it, and would make life & gigging so much easier. Annoying thing is I sometimes agree with him too!
Bass, lead, amp...... thats all I've ever used! Oh, apart from a cheap chorus pedal once in 1994.... -
Just going to go and check mine............ Yup, my 77/78 has it right on the edge of the head, under the IO of precision. I really should take mine to bits at some point to find out if its a 78 or 77.......

'I just want to get back what I paid for it'
4-string-thing replied to Martin E's topic in General Discussion
I've got a Yamaha bass in the for sale section at the minute, and I used the same phrase, or something similar. I used it because, I only bought the bass a couple of months ago so its in the same condition (only gigged twice, 2 one hour sets) and its had new strings, DR Neons. So, cost of bass and strings, plus petrol to collect it £230. Selling price, £220. Now, reasons for selling, clearly I'm not out to make a profit, but I've just left the band I bought the bass to use in (70's and 80's glam rock) and it probably won't suit the style of my next band. I've also had an unexpected vets bill, as my cat got badly hurt in a fight and has cost me £268 to get sorted! (add that to the cost of buying a bass I didn't actually need - £498) The cat doesn't want to buy the bass, so it's ended up on here. I'm not selling because its a rubbish bass, it's not - I really like it but can't justify keeping it. I reckon most people selling on here are pretty honest and not just out to make a quick buck. -
I think its an old valve amp thing. These modern amp simulator thingys can't use trademarked names, so they use things like "British" to describe crunchy tones like a vintage Marshall or Vox and "American" to describe a cleaner sound, more akin to a Fender twin or bassman. Out of interest, my (far east built) Ashdown heads, to my ears, sound remarkably like my 31 year old (USA) Acoustic 220 head!
The first couple of guitarist I worked were great but then as far as being in a band we all grew up together being the first for all of us from school onwards. As were some of the ones I did wee side projects with. I then give up for a while, a few months after starting again I get asked to join another lot. A few signs things weren't going to go well. When lead guitarist first words are "Oh I thought you'd have a precision" I have noticed that on every you tube video there bassists have all been playing precisions. When Lead guitarist has been teaching the rhythm guitarist and rhythm guitarists first go at playing with anyone but his "mentor" has all the same habits and cheaper versions of the same gear and doesn't know note positions or chord names. same pickup selection and not too far away on the amp settings. Lead guitarist has no interest in saying what chords are being used other than its in the key of x I think and telling his "pupil" to sort me out who doesn't know either. "Ahhhh it's that that then this one and then that" First 4 songs of the cd I was given and told to look over are not the same 4 songs the guitarists were there to play. One of the songs I was given was a cover and totally different version of what the guitarist played. They want me to learn a song they think was called "blah blah blah or something like that" for next time which no one had a copy of and I couldn't even find it on youtube or Limewire. Even searching through albums of the supposed artist I couldn't find any titles remotely the same. The guitarists decides to leave out the bridges in some songs without telling anyone. Of course he taught the other guy the song so he doesn't know the bridge and the Lead guitarist is adamant it didn't exist anyway. Despite the fact the lyrics just don't fit with out it. Not a tuner between the two of them. Being told "we're not a band that uses effects" despite the fact I was only using my multi FX as a tuner, there was nothing added. Being told I couldn't set up near the drummer as the Lead guitarist needed to be there. Then of course he procedes to turn up so he can hear himself over the drummer so I have to watch rather than listen to the drummer. Whilst having an identical sounding guitar beside me turned up so the lead guitarist can hear him. I ended up mic'd and through the PA so I could be heard because the Roland cube they had wasn't big enough to be heard over the guitars. The whole experience put me off and I'll admit 5 years later still puts me off playing with anyone else .
You have also played in the band I have just left!
In my experience most people who call themselves 'Lead Guitarists' believe the following: 1. You should play whatever songs they want to play at all times. 2. They can play bass easily, its just guitar with four strings (they then start playing it like lead guitar) 3. They can put a distorted screaming solo in any song and it fits, even if your playing motown! 4. They are always in tune, it must be someone else! (one of the guitarists I play with now actually asked if the keyboard player could 'tune his keyboard' to match him!!!!! 5. Trying every effect on their pedal board through practice and over people when they are talking about the song is perfectly acceptable 6. They should be louder than everyone else 7. If they cant play it, its a rubbish song and noone will like it. 8. They are always playing the right chords and everyone else must have been listening to a different version. 9. No matter what the song, they should play loud and heavy all the way through even if the song requires them to not play for a few bars. I am sure there are many more but in my experience most guitarist are total knob-heads!
You've played in the band that I've just left, haven't you?

I bought a Warwick hard case for my corvette..... it came in a cardboard box marked "fragile" Who says the Germans don't have a sense of humour?

Due to an unexpected vets bill and leaving my band in the same week, I've decided that my Yamaha BBG-4A bass is surplus to requirements and I've decided to sell. I bought it a couple of months ago for the glam-rock band I was in, and it suited it perfectly, it looks and sounds great and plays really well. Its 4 string, fretted, twin humbuckers, gold hardware and active electronics. It's finished in see thru turquoise with what I think is a photo-zebra print top! The finish has no marks or chips at all, but the gold hardware has tarnished a bit. I was told the bass was built in 1988 but apparently the serial number says later. I fitted it with a set of orange DR Neon strings, and can either leave them on or put an ordinary set of strings back on. It came in a Stagg gig bag when I bought it, which is not in brilliant condition, but does the job. Not looking to make anything on what I think might be quite a rare bass (based on the fact that I've never seen another one and can't find much about them on the net either) So price is £185 ono. Picture not great, sorry, phone camera and bad light!
not a great deal, i'm looking at an ebay amp. Also, a rackable amp would be ideal as I've got some rack stuff. I've had an odd idea. If I used a Marshall JMP1 rack thing as the bass preamp could I just use a PA power amp to power the cab? Would that sound good or bad?
Unashamed plug..... I've got an "as new" Ashdown MAG 300 EVO 11 head that I won't be using, as I bought the MAG600 a few weeks ago. It's been used for 2 gigs, less than 2 hours use in total. Its obviously ideal for your cab. It could be rack-mountable, just remove it from its case get a couple of rack ears from somewhere and Bob's your aunties live in lover! Its not in the for sale section yet, but will be pretty soon, as I've just left the really loud band I was in, so only need the one amp now! PM me if you're interested!
