I've got a pair of HH P.A cabs in the garage, that someone gave me. Only rated at 100w with 12" drivers but they take a lot more than the 100w and are really loud and clear. Trouble is, they each weigh as much as a ford fiesta!

What AMP(s) is in your Local Rehearsal Studio?
4-string-thing replied to JMT3781's topic in Amps and Cabs
+ 1 for Quad in Leicester, which is a great set of rooms. The room we use has a SWR head + Ashdown 2x10 + 1x15, which sounds very good. Have also used the room with Ampeg 450 + Trace 2x15, which is absolutely amazing. Also tried the Markbass rig but not my cup of tea.
I didn't like the Ampeg/Trace rig but I'm an Acoustic owner, so its in my DNA to not like Ampeg! -
DR Neon strings. Anyone tried them?
4-string-thing replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
Mine arrived today, after 2 weeks. There are a couple of pics of them on my green Yamaha in the other thread about them! -
My orange neons arrived today (14 days from a place on ebay called music supplies direct) Now they're on my bass, I'm not so sure! Still, they only cost £22 and they will certainly get some comments! What AMP(s) is in your Local Rehearsal Studio?
Notes Studios in North Shields has an old Trace 4x10 combo running through an anonymous 1x15 extension cab in one room, and Ashdown MAG stuff in the other two. When I'm feeling lazy, they do the job, but I try to take my own backline wherever possible. I can't believe that there are rehearsal places that have MarkBass gear!! How much extra do they charge per hour? We pay £12.50 an hour whether we use their gear or not.
We use Quad in Leicester, in the room we use, its a Markbass SD800 head into a 1x15 and a 4x10. Sounds really good and very loud. The other rooms have Ampegs into 8x10's or into Trace 2x15's... amazing really, rooms are big and well lit too, we pay £15 an hour. Only drawback, we have to pay at the time of booking by debit card. -
50 years ago, a lot of bass players used a tea chest bass, 1 string, no frets, no amp! Wish things were that simple nowdays, I'd have saved a fortune!

Acoustic 220 Head, What speaker do you recommend?
4-string-thing replied to Lemming16's topic in Amps and Cabs
I bought mine in 1980 with a 404 (1x15, 4ohm cab rated at 125w) and ran it for about 15 years before I added a home made 2x10, which is just a basic box design. It has worked perfectly well, adding the 2x10 cab added little, if any extra volume but gave me a bit more power handling and maybe a bit more punch to my sound. I was lucky to find a bargain 402 cab (2x15, 4ohm and rated 250w) which I now always use with the 220. Depending on the gig size or my moods I can add the 2x10 or the 1x15. I have to agree with bumnote though, if you are going to build a cab, follow Bills advice! -
Acoustic 220 Head, What speaker do you recommend?
4-string-thing replied to Lemming16's topic in Amps and Cabs
I don't know much about speakers, but I believe most Acoustic cabs used Eminence originally, so that would seem to be a good choice. There doesn't seem much difference in volume with my 220 whether I use an 8ohm cab, a 4ohm cab or 2 4ohm cabs, 2 ohms total. I'd go for a 4 ohm though coz you can still add another later on (thats the beauty of a head that runs happily at 2 ohms) Congratulations, btw, on getting one of these great amps at such a bargain price! -
I suppose I could be interested in an 8 string (4 pairs) like the guy from Cheap Trick. Anyone got a Hagstrom? Then again, I'd have to use a pick, and thats another thing I don't like!

Thats right, the mighty IRON PYTHON have conned another venue into letting them play! Along with the brilliant F4 from Burton, they are taking over The Victoria Bikers Pub in Coalville, Leicestershire on Saturday December 11th. Come along and witness the mayhem! As usual, any Basschatters make themselves known to me, I'll buy you a pint!

You just need to look at my screen name and sig to know where I stand on this one!

The 220 (and indeed, any Acoustic amp) is a great amp! To my ears a Fender P through an Acoustic is the best bass sound ever.... However, it only really has the one sound and you may find it a bit limiting. Its only rated at 170w into 2 ohms, but in reality it sounds a lot louder than that, especially if you use one of the matching Acoustic cabs. Its certainly loud enough for most gigs. Bumnote is right, they are well made, I've been using mine for 30 years and it's never let me down!

I ordered mine about 10 days ago, still waiting for them to arrive! -
Thanks Iconic, that looks quite comprehensive, but I've just looked at the bass again on my ebay and there is a picture of the neck socket with the date stamp 88.10.12. So I suppose assembled end of 88, sold 89?
-
yes we have one.... It starts with some air raid sirens, followed by a low synth bass drone with our singer shouting an introduction along the lines of "Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready for Iron Python" then the tune from 2001 a space odyssey! Complete pretentious drivel, but we are a "comedy c*ck-rock" band and it makes people laugh....
If you post the serial number I can break it out for you, lovely looking bass. ...looks like same controls as an active RBX...overall volume, pan pot, treble and bass? ...I'm fairly sure I was bidding on this bass a week or so back, but there has been two in as many weeks...bit like buses!
Not sure about the controls, didn't seem to be overall volume or pan. Just volume and boost/cut for each pup? Serial number is PY16132
Thought the BBG first series was introduced in the 90s, and the second series in the 00s?
You could be right, I know nothing about Yamaha basses, so I only went on what the guy put on the ebay listing!

Just got back from rehearsal where I used the Yamaha through a small Trace Elliot combo (150w) What a bass! Plays brilliantly, sounded fantastic, clear, punchy, great bottom end, bit of growl....loved it. The band loved it too, lots of positive comments about the finish, etc. Can't wait for our next gig in a couple of weeks!

£7 for a guitar stand? Thats outrageous, I bought 3 from CPC for a tenner a while back! When I bought my first bass back in 1977, a Top Twenty, anyone else start on them? You never saw them in proper music shops, only in Woolies or The Andertons catalogue. It's been going on a long time. Hopefully the people who buy these things soon graduate to decent instruments from good, local musical instrument stores.

I've been using one at the rehearsal studio we use and it sounds great with my Warwick, but not so good with my Precision. Its an SD800 head with a 1x15 and a 4x10, I wouldn't say it sounds better than my old Acoustic rig, but its a hell of a lot louder! And yes, after the initial shock of seeing the cones move so much, it is quite entertaining!
Come on! Pics!
Got the model wrong, its a BBG-4A II made in 1988. Had a quick play last night, it sounds pretty good and the actives mean there are loads of different sounds available, something I'm not used to with my passive basses.
