1.
I found a new solution, own all the amps (in the world ideally, working on that, but the ones the guitarist is using) so they have to do what you say.
Or you could do what my predecessor did, throw a hissy fit and leave the band during a rehearsal shouting "you play too loud" Mind you, he did turn up at a biker rally gig wearing a parka!
 2.
If i had seen this originally i wouldve pitched in. As it is, good on you
Likewise! Hope the build went/is going well and Vicky is ok.
 3. The idea of playing in a covers band used to appall me, but I joined one a while back, and to be honest I really enjoy it. The trick is to either, do the song in a completely different way to the original, or do song that people know, but don't hear bands play very often.
 4. Give it to Wayne for a couple of weeks and see how it comes back?
 5. You have my sympathy matey! The band I play in has a loud drummer, a guitarist with a 200w Blackstar half stack and a guitarist with a mesa 2x12 combo plus extension cab (he has also just bought a Blackstar) My Ashdown 300w head through 2 15" cabs couldn't really compete. I had to add a bit of PA support. I now plan to use my Acoustic head alongside the Ashdown to give me a total approaching 500w. Its been said that adding more speakers will add extra power, it does if you go from 8 ohms to 4, but it doesn't seem to add extra volume (or loudness, if you prefer) I'm afraid to say that you will probably need to buy a bigger amp, or a much more sensitive cab to get loud enough. Best alternative though, is to point out to your guitarists that they can turn down a bit and still get "their sound" Good luck!
 6.
I like to be felt and heard (giggity) I used to use 2 4x10 1048h trace cabs, great sound, now use a trace 4x10 and trace 4x8,best sound I have had.Dont do 15s or 18s,too woolly and not enough definition for me,this rig really cuts through the mix brilliantly, the 4x8 really does kick the high end out and the 4x10 punches the lows.Great for a stage mix,any more bottom end normally comes from the PA. 8x10s rule for me.
Horses for courses I guess, but I don't find 15's woolly, never used 18's but I'd like to. I want to be heard too, but not by compromising my sound by adding top end to cut through a mix!
 7.
some of us prefer to be felt.
yes indeed!!!!!!
 8.
+1 Unless it's a 15". I just don't think I could get away with a single 15" cab, they need to be paired with something to give them some zing and top end!
I don't want any zing or top end though....
 9.
Also quite right. For all the hoopla made about how different size drivers sound most of it is uninformed conjecture. The only factor influenced by driver size alone is dispersion. Everything else is determined by a dozen odd T/S specs, with driver cone area (Sd) being only one of them, and a rather insignificant one at that.
Fair point, but I was just really only stating my own personal preference.
 10.
8" speakers for bass guitar are about as useful as Michael Barrymore being a swimming attendant.
Agreed, I would never use 10's either unless in conjunction with 1 or preferably 2 15's! Don't even talk to me about 12" speakers for bass....
 11. Anything that looks like a piece of furniture, has more than 4 strings, has gold hardware or has pointy bits!
 12.
I think most of that would achieve is giving you the upper power limit of the 1x15 x2, so not much further ahead than the 2x15, except for 50% more speaker area.
I think adding the extra cab added very little, if anything to be fair. The only advantage to my (admittedly poor) ears was maybe I could hear myself a bit better due to the 1x15 being at head height? Oh, and it looks cool having a 6ft high stack!
 13. I did a gig recently using my Acoustic 220, which can run at 2 ohms. I used my Acoustic 2x15 4 ohm cab and added my Acoustic 1x15 which is also 4 ohms. I have to say adding the extra 15" cone and halving the impedance made my amp no louder whatsoever!
 14.
Er thats not quite true. One of the reasons acoustic amps appear loud is that the volume control knob is not evenly graduated, so that the full power of the amp can be delivered at quite a low volume setting. If I run my 220 with the bass boosted I cant set the volume knob with the padded input at 1.5 and its deafening. However, you dont really get anymore by turning it to no 5. The speaker cabinets were also quite efficient for the day, and you can certainly gig with a 406 and a 220 [rated at 120w] and piss of the rest of the band with its volume as I often do.
When I said equivalent, I meant in decibel terms, which I know has nothing much to do with watts....
 15. Yes, I've noticed that with my 220 head, full volume seems to be reached with the volume control on 3! I still reckon its 175w into 2 ohms sounds louder than my 300w Ashdown into 4 ohms though...
 16.
I've nothing to add to this thread except my avatar.
Best post on here!
 17. Actually, you can beat an all valve head for bass, probably not for guitar though.
 18. There is a great Acoustic resource here: Acoustic The 470 was produced from 1973 til 1977 and I think was replaced by the 220. It produced 175w irrespective of speaker impedance. Those of you who think 175w is not a great deal, 175w of Acoustic power into one of their cabs is probably equivalent to about 500 modern watts! One question though, why the hell would you want to sell it? If its in good nick and works, keep it! We all know Acoustic are the worlds best bass amps, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
 19.
Hardly any heavyweights of the bass world are there?
Dunno... Nick Beggs!
 20.
It sounded sh*t.
Ah, but aren't we always being told that "your tone comes from your fingers, not your equipment"?
 21. I'm not using my 78 (maybe 77) precision for gigs at the minute, not because I don't want to, its just that my Warwick suits my current band better. I'm still using my 30 year old Acoustic rig though!
 22. We dress up a lot, spandex, leather, pvc etc. Online is good for the more off the wall stuff (the dreaded bay is good) but if you're in a rush, charity shops are ok. I'm 48 and the other guys in the band are all over 40, so don't let your age put you off!
 23. 24 hours away bump.... hope to see you there!
 24.
Thats very kind You should hear the new one!! I've gone MESA!! Seymour
I used to just be jealous of your shorts, but now I'm jealous of your rig too...damn you!
 25.
A chicken shed in Thornton, Leicestershire
This is just down the road from me.... I've never managed to find it though!
