ooh....how do I get one of these?
-
I wouldn't get too worried about being 'cursed' or anything, it's a well known fact that 99% of guitarists and drummers are ars*holes! I spent 4 years in a folk-rock band and I lost count of people that came and went (mostly drummers) just keep plugging away and you'll get there eventually. I suspect the same thing applies to covers bands as much as originals.

Oh Yeah.....Danny is the man!!!! I'm sure you all knew that anyway..... Its followed by "A skin too few" the Nick Drake documentary, also worth another look.

A Top Twenty bass, cost £25, which was short scale, vaguely P like with a telecaster head, and a pickup that stopped working after a few weeks. A CMI practice amp that I blew the speaker in after a couple of days, soon to be replaced by a Selmer 50w combo (a select-a-tone, I think) given to me by the guy across the road. It was 1977, the summer of punk! Wish I still had the Selmer!
That's working on the Retail Price Index - if you go for how long it would have taken the average person to work to pay for it, today's price would be £2,600. Sorry, but the £1,200 struck me as a bit low so I went of and became an anorak for a few minutes
Using spinynormans widget, my P that I paid £240 for would now be worth £910, quite a bit less than I would hope to get should I ever sell it.

I'm still in love with my 77/78 P that I've owned since 1979! I own a few other basses, but always seem to come back to the P. Never compared it to another one, so don't know if its a good one or not, but it suits me.

The folk-rock band I used to be in always did silver machine... pretty much as the Hawkwind version except with a bit more fiddle! Used to confuse the hell out of sound engineers.....

Which is the better value for money?

I played a mates RBX 170 a couple of times a while back and was really impressed by it (it cost him £170, I think) its a much nicer looking thing than the BB, which imho is one of the ugliest basses out there! I have never seen one of the Peaveys, so can't comment. The squier classic vibe range get nothing but praise on here, so I'd be tempted to look at some of those or the vintage modified jazz? -
I think some bands are great live and not so good in the studio and vice versa. Examples are Cheap Trick at Budokan, a great live album but their studio stuff is nowhere near as good. Fairport Convention's Leige and Lief, Full House and Unhalfbricking are all great albums, but Fairport Live Convention and Farewell Farewell are dire by comparison. Wilko Johnsons solid senders first album is rubbish, but the free bonus live album that came with it is brilliant!
Recently I got one of those Line 6 wireless jobbies as I was fed up getting my feet tangled in leads on stage. This allowed me to go right out front during soundchecks to check out the balance of the band and I have to say it was a revelation to standing up on stage. The way the bass sat in the mix was a little overpowering so I have since dialled out some lows and in some lower mids which has worked wonders - but on stage I thought the old sound was better.
I say go wireless too! I bought a fairly cheap wireless kit just for using at soundchecks, really helps with finding out how the whole band sounds, not just the bass.

I remember bass giant, John McCoy once saying that he left the pick-up cover on his precision on because it made it louder! I might try this myself at next weeks rehearsal.

Did I say "sh*tty factory"? Sorry, I meant to say Music shop..... Only kidding Pete!!!!!

I look at it this way.... If you're an amateur, then playing gigs is fun, so just enjoy it whatever song you're doing. You're there to entertain an audience, so as long as they like the songs, thats what really matters. If you're a professional, enjoy it even more, you're lucky enough to be playing bass for a living.... you could be working 10 hours a day in some sh*tty factory! (apologies to anyone who works in a factory)
What utter rubbish, and you could pick up a 2x15 peavey or an old HH for peanuts. I use a 2x15, and to me their advantage is that most of them have wheels at the back so its a built in stack truck and no lifting required. [we dont do upstairs] 4x10s have become something of an industry standard, and if you look through manufacturers catalogues theres more 4x10s than 2x15s.
Agreed, I picked up my Acoustic 2x15 with a non-working head for £52 a while back. And as we all know, Acoustic are the worlds best amps!

Would you play a style thats not to your taste ?
4-string-thing replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
I'm in a band that plays a mix of 70's glam, punk and metal. None of which I would ever listen to (unless it was to learn a song) I'm a folkie at heart, but I have to say, I love playing Alice Cooper followed by AC/DC and the Sex Pistols! -
Ah, yes, the name Mark sounds familiar.... Folk-rock really does it for me, wish I had never left my old band "Three Legged Dog" Not really found anything better since.
My Bergantino HS410 is 4 ohm.
Yeah, one of those would do nicely, apart from the weight and the cost!
I dont think you have quite got it, and some of the other explanations are not not very clear. If you are using a solid state amp, the power delivered by the amp is dependant on the impedance of the speaker cab you are using. published specs for the eden traveller will develop 500 watts into a 4 ohm load and 300 into an 8 ohm load. If you have one 8 ohm cab the amp will deliver 300watts, ie not full power, if paired with one 4 ohm cabinet it will deliver the full 500 watts. However in the real world I dont think it makes much of an audible difference, for lots of technical reasons that alex or bill could explain. I have twice used the same amp [seperately] with 4 ohm and 8 cabinets, in a gig situation, just by swapping the speaker cable and found no significant difference in volume. The normal way to increase your volume is not to use a single 4 ohm cabinet in preference to an 8 ohm cabinet but to use two cabinets so you are using more speakers. Two 8 ohm speakers plugged into the amp gives the amp a total impedance of 4 ohms allowing the amp to develop full power into more speakers. Most amps [but not all] dont like two 4 ohm speakers. Therefore if you buy an amp with a 4 ohm cab, it doesnt really give you much more volume, and it prevents you adding a second cab when you play the albert hall. theres lots of maths in there but i tried to keep it simple Does that help or make itworse?
Does anybody make 4 ohm cabs nowdays? I only ever seem to see 8 ohm cabs for sale.
This Ashdown is on eBay at the moment. With this setup you'll get 300 watts out of the 600 watt head. But you can always add another cab when funds permit. It's right at the top of your budget though.
Those MAG cabs go quite cheaply on ebay too...

Here's my 2p's worth... I used to have a Behringer 32 channel mixer in my studio and it was great, loads of features, never let me down, wish I had kept it. I now own a Behringer powered PA mixer, which works and sounds ok, but not really as loud as the quoted 1200w. I have used a Behringer amp through a Marshall cab in a rehearsal room recently and again, sounded ok (not brilliant though) but not as loud as the quoted 450w. I have used 3 Peavey combo's in rehearsal rooms, and they have all sounded utter sh*te! And the Ampeg head I tried once was also sh*te! I wouldn't buy anything from either of those two. I own an Ashdown MAG EVOII 300w head, and I've yet to use it at a gig, but at fairly loud levels at home it sounded good through a variety of cabs. It cost £230 brand new from PMT Birmingham. Your budget would get you one of these and a decent s/h cab. Good luck with the search though!

Ah, I think I may be refering to a previous fiddler, it was probably a bit longer ago than I first thought!
-
I think I saw him advertising on bandmix or partysounds a while back, but it could have been for session work or something?
-
ye! folk-rock er, rocks! Silverdogs really are good, do they still have The Mad fiddler? He was looking for a new band last I heard....
