1.
I'm confused here. The Mr. X version you mention is stated as being the album version on that vid, and it sounds like the one I know and love from the album. Why wouldn't Stu Zender, who was a full time member for the second album, be playing on the album's title track? Weird. But, I suppose saying that it's amazing how little he actually recorded for the first album. A few sessioners laid most if it down before he got the job I believe, including Andrew Levy from the Brand New Heavies. This is the only version of Space Cowboy I've ever heard. Anyone got a link to the one Stu Zender did play on? Would love to check it out.
That's not right, Stuart Zender played on every single track of Emergency On Planet Earth, Return Of The Space Cowboy and Travelling Without Moving apart from two songs, 'When You Gonna Learn' (Andrew Levy, Stuart wasn't even in the band at this stage as far as I'm aware) and the album version of Space Cowboy. He did play on the single version and every single song on the rest of the first three albums, no session players were brought in. The latter track wasn't played on by Zender because he had taken time out of the studio to sort out his breakup with his then girlfriend. When he came back it turned out that Jay had gotten someone else to fill in for him. Zender was not too pleased. Zender even played on most of the tracks for the 4th album Synkronized but when he was finally given the boot/left the band his tracks were erased or shelved and Nick Fyffe was brought into replace him. Some of the tracks were available a long time ago to listen to Zender's original recordings.
 2. I'm the same when it comes to enjoying Gospel music but without the religious part. Ironically it's usually the big hip hop guys that like to use the best of modern gospel players on their music. Mike Elizondo on bass for example on a lot of Dr. Dre's stuff, also his producer for a while. Take a listen to Erykah Badu and (already noted) D'Angelo. And if you don't get round to listening to any of that then definitely listen to Robert Glasper, who I can't recommend enough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-0JZlrk4xA
 3. I'd guess it's the most iconic bass ever in relation to a specific person or band. They sound amazing, completely limited in what they can do but I've not heard any other instrument do what a Hofner can. Unique is the word. I love them.
 4.
Mine was '...played it in front of me, like a man..'. I just love that gallus, non-relevant comment!
That was pretty backhanded. If nothing else the response is definitely an exercise in bad PR.
 5. I think the people down the hall know who you are.
 6.
Having recently dealt with US customs and immigration there is no way on earth I would be risking anything with them. "Welcome to the USA", indeed
That would be going into the U.S as opposed to leaving the U.S? I'll admit customs are tough at the U.S border but the times I've travelled out of the U.S back to the U.K and encountered literally no one at the customs desk has been 100% of the time. To the OP, I wouldn't necessarily advise doing it but honestly I think the likelihood of you getting away with it is quite high, at least at the airport that I regularly use (Manchester).
 7.
this bass playing from mr X is just amazing.. i still think its Randy HOPE Taylor from Incognito. just sounds so much like him. im prob totally wrong mind.
He's said that it wasn't him, also Jamiroquai have all said that the bloke who played was full of his own self-importance and they didn't like him - RHT has since played with Jamiroquai on Dynamite so I guess it's unlikely.
 8. I've always liked like WoT's sunburst collection. Oh and Clarky's '63 P-Bass.
 9. Exactly the same year and finish as my jazz down to those great block inlays w/rosewood neck, a great period for Fender bass guitars as well. You must be mad selling this! Great price too.
 10.
Something's happening with disco ? Why wasn't I invited ? I am disco personified .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBJ9RnbK8G4
 11.
I've heard a confirmed MM player saying that anything post Ernie Ball isn't a 'proper' Ray (he also explained to me, in great detail, about 'transition era' basses which I'd never heard about before) meanwhile I've also hear people say the Classic & Ltd Edition runs are over-priced and just a way for MM to make some easy money.
I'm so glad I will never be one of these people, I'm just not interested in being that much of a fanboy about anything at all. If a bass plays well and sounds good that's good enough for me.
 12. I don't think it's fashionable at all, although if you look at what is fashionable in music currently then you realise that you sometimes only have to do something with enough conviction to make it work. Just look at what's happening with disco right now.
 13. It's a classic finish.
 14. Ahh well, a clash of egos I guess. The clip doesn't do it for me, although slap playing rarely ever does.
 15. The smiley faces of doom on those graphic EQs!
I heard a few horror stories about MK & LG at one of these gigs. Apparently it was really quite embarrassing
What happened?
 16.
Haven't really listened to the new record. Any good?
Yeh it's superb. Nicely accessible but with some good production and collaborations... from Alex Turner and Elton John no less!
 17.
They all look like fender jazz basses with slightly different head stocks to me, dull
I like Stingrays too but there are companies that breathe their own life into a classic instrument from time to time.
 18. Just an excellent tune. I can take or leave the bass tone but the guitar is great and Homme's writing skills are just great.
 19.
Lull's look great, but I personally would get a Sadowsky.
The basses that blew me out the water when I was last in NYC were the Pensas coming out of Rudy's. Their preamp was much less harsh than the Sadowsky stuff, more naturally voiced. The quality of them was exceptional in fact.
 20. I love nickel strings, I can't touch stainless steels anymore they're way too harsh. D'Addarios Nickels are great but they just don't last more than two gigs, which is a shame because they're by far my favourite. I'd be open to suggestions to longer lasting possibilities if anyone knows of any brands.
 21. Interesting, unfortunately it looks a lot like my Gran designed it. Markbass have never been overly keen on aesthetics!
 22.
For THAT kind of money, I'd be straight onto Roger Sadowsky for a custom 5 string. Guaranteed it will be perfect.
I wanted to love Sadowskys but I was consistently underwhelmed with 80% of ones I've tried, both NYC and Metro. I even swung by the new shop in Queens a few months back. Some lovely stuff but almost nothing to justify me spending. The exception are the (relatively) new Will Lee models with the mid boost. Really helped the preamp along and so easy to play. Mike Lull stuff is doing it for me at the moment.
 23. Just been on the Alleva Coppolo website. I'd still like one.
 24. Vintage P-Basses.
 25. RE roadworn basses, I absolutely love natural wear and tear on old Fenders, I think it's a classic look. I would feel a bit like I'd cheated though if I went and bought something that had been roadworn in a factory in Mexico though. Controversially, I have a real dislike of Sei basses! I've played a few and they sound good but I hate the looks of them. Even more controversially I have an irrational dislike of UK made gear. I prefer American made stuff, literally for no good reason at all. I would make possible exceptions for some Overwater stuff.
Hehe! My favourite bass tone so far is an Ibanez bass through an ashdown amp. I find it interesting how tastes can differ so much from one person to the next.
Agreed. My preference for vintage Fender is definitely not something shared by everyone around here!
