With the gain around 10 o'clock or less it's a very clean amp. Take the active and passive mids past 12 o'clock and it can get into the very bright EBS territory. Drop the mids and bring the gain up towards 12 o'clock and it starts to get a bit 'ampegy' for want of a better description. The overdrive can get very aggressive beyond about 11 o'clock - I usually kept it near 8 o'clock just to switch in a little grind. The overdrive channel has it's own volume control so you can treat it as a totally seperate channel - the tone controls can need a bit of a tweak depending what sort of overdrive you're after. I tended to have both active and passive mids rolled off to about 10 o'clock for the stuff I play - mainly as I have active basses that can be a bit too 'glassy' if the mids are pushed. A passive fender isn't quite so 'in your face'. It really is a hugely versatile amp. You're more than welcome to come out to Forth to give it a try if you're interested.

Adam came over to play the Manchester bass day some years back. he was a really nice guy to chat with and a monster player. Has a fairly active facebook profile. Coincidentally I was eyeing up the basic ANB306 earlier. Retails for around £2000. Adam says it's identical to his own instrument apart from being made by a machine instead of hand made.

5 string semi ac/hollow body basses? Something fat?

I have a Kelly Dragonfly 5. considering the price it's exceptionally well made and sounds superb. -

I have several Hercules stands and don't have any issues with stickiness. What I have seen though is sometimes the rivets in the clamp drop out which is a bit worrying, especially when I consider the value of my instruments
Why do people who live on a coast, or in a remote region, consistently put up their items for sale and refuse point blank to post them? Top tip....a lot of your potential buyers live too far away to get to you without difficulty and fish don't play bass.
The fish was easily the best bass player YES ever had. You do make a good point though. Plenty of Mesa gear appears in the suth that I'd like to get my hands on but the sellers won't ship.
Are "Luther built" basses any better than those produced by larger manufacturers? I wouldn't necessarily expect a guy in a backstreet garage to build a better car than a well known manuacturer in a multimillion pound factory.

Are "Luther built" basses any better than those produced by larger manufacturers? I wouldn't necessarily expect a guy in a backstreet garage to build a better car than a well known manuacturer in a multimillion pound factory.
I rebuilt my MG midget in a single garage from the ground up over a number of years and I know for a fact that the panel fit is far better than any midget coming off the production line in Abingdon. In keeping with the upmarket bass analogy, I've modified the engine and suspension so it runs and handles better than original and it has a much nicer candy apple paint job. You'd have to pay a car manufacturer an awful lot of money to get your production line motor made that little bit more individual. Back on topic, I bought my first Alembic from a shop and loved the quality so much there was no question over who would be building my 2 customs. The best bit is, they're a really small outfit and treat every customer like one of the family.

I have a Harvest leather twin bass bag for my fretted and fretless alembics and they're superb. Wouldn't trust my basses in anything less. They're pricey but well worth it IMO.

What were you doing when you were Eleven years old?

Watching deep Purple at Newcastle City hall. Shaped my musical tastes for years to come. -

Three times I've splashed out on new Alembic basses. The first was 1995 in the Bass centre in Birmingham after a few weeks trying every 5 string I could find - it beat a pre Gibson Tobias and several Warwick instruments into the dirt. Second was my fretless which was a custom order so I spent quite some time on the phone to the Wickershams discussing wood choices and hardware. Third was an early 50th ( I was 48) present I bought through Bass central, orlando and again involved some interesting discussions with the Wickersham family and Beaver Felton. (I've since been out to the workshop in Santa Rosa to meet the family - nicest people on earth IMO).
