1. I always have my Alembic fretted and fretless 5s. They were custom builds, fit my hands perfectly and are a joy to play. No point in owning them if I don't take them out. I sometimes take the NS5 upright if we're doing a bit of ceilidh just to ring the changes. The rest of my harem live in different rooms of the house so I can pick an instrument up whenever I feel the need.
2. I'll take this off your hands. Where in Edinburgh are you? I work in sighthill so could meet somewhere at lunchtime / after 4pm one evening. Work days are best as I live in Lanarkshire and don't often get towards Edinburgh at the weekends.
3. You need to have the tuning knob the other side of the cog to the string departure direction otherwise the cogs will be pulling apart and you'll end up with slippage.
4. For years I used an EBS Unichorus and was very happy with how it sounded. Unfortunately, all my gig bags got nicked last year so I've since bought a Tech21 Bass boost chorus which is easily the best I've ever heard
5. gardener's world has been cancelled this week because of women's football !!! WTF!!!!
6. Hopefully be getting to the Tap & Spile in Morpeth tomorrow night to watch a bunch of folkies.
7. I looked at Badass years ago (1982) then fitted a Schaller. As Smythe says it's infinitely adjustable and everything stays put when you want it to. Am I right in thinking you'd have to cut grooves In the Badass saddles yourself once you've decided on the spacing?
8. too many to choose from but in no particular order, my favourite female voices are Kate Bush, Kate Rusby, Joni and Ricki lee jones. Favourite male voice would be James Taylor
9. If I'm learning a song I'll listen on the computer otherwise I'll stick a record on the turntable, sit back and relax.
10. "treat it as a two way audition". That's a good point but it does highlight one of my shortcomings. How to tell THEM they aren't good enough
11. Sounds like UKC has become a dating agency
12. Have we had the new Dream Theater double concept 'The Astonishing'? Not bad at all although not a patch on their other concept 'Scenes from a memory'
13. I've recently bought a harvest 'bag for two' in antique cow and I'm very happy with it. outstanding protection and very nice to look at... http://www.harvest-guitar.com/Bass-Bags-for-Two/
14. Nilsson's 'The point'. great album and an equally fun animation. There's a theme running throughout Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours'.
15. I saw him in Newcastle with Wakeman probably around 1980. I believe his nickname was Boghead. Probably something to do with the extra spiky mullet.
16. Bugger. Means I'm going to have to think a bit harder what to get Mrs J for Christmas. The Glasgow shows have always been her favourite time of year.
17. Alembic have made several basses and guitars with ebony tops. First one is one of their featured customs and has a macassar ebony top.. http://www.alembic.com/info/fc_cosmo.html and then there's fellow alembic club member - Rami's pair... 18. Sounds a bit like 'An evening of YES music plus'
19. There's a decent musicians section on Gumtree. Quite a lot of duplication with join my band but at least you can search for snger
20. I have 7 basses and take 2 to gigs. a 5 string fretted and 5 string fretless. I'll shortly also be starting to use my NS5 upright for gigs. The rest are on stands in various rooms to pick up whenever I'm in the mood. I use a Kelly dragonfly fretless 5 exclusively for learning songs
21. There are photos on the interweb of him sporting hairs on his chinny chin chin.
22. I really can't stand fairytale of newyork. Biggest pile of sh*te ever sung by an even bigger pile of sh*te. your opinion may vary. I'm currently really enjoying James Taylor's Christmas offering, particularly his funky version of jingle bells
23. rickie lee jones. 'The other side of desire' . Her best album for quite a while.
24. You can pick up the mark 2 version of the Zoom H2 on evilbay pretty cheap. (comes packaged with the power supply, mini tripod, cables etc. I've used one for quite a while and find the sound quality is excellent. good enough to use on your band website or example. Has 4 mics so you can record in 'surround sound' or stereo . Gives you plenty of options for setting up.
25. he was brilliant last night in Glasgow. Sadly only got 20 minutes as technical issues meant they didn't go on till after 8pm but NWR managed more notes in that short time than Rhino Edwards did in the whole of the Quo segment
