I just put this album on at random and remembered that it has this cover on it: Which obviously I’m not claiming is better than the original but actually yes, yes I am.

For best performance on the Mac you should format the disk as APFS which Windows PCs can’t read, but if you do want to use the same disk on both types then you can use ExFAT format.

For the screen issue you could give SwitchResX a try.

BBC4 now for some awesome upright playing
nekomatic replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
I'm with you on upright bass solos - I so often end up feeling that both player and listener are fighting a losing battle with the physical limitations of the instrument. And you could argue that it just doesn't make any sense trying to decide whether a bassist is 'better' than a sax player or a pianist based on a fifteen minute performance. That said, I thought Hastie's playing was lovely and would be very happy to hear him in a band. But to be honest I liked all of them, and would struggle to pick which one I thought should have won. Although maybe the guitarist… It was a stellar lineup on the judging panel incidentally - if there's any of them you don't know, check them out. -
Also I think this one has turned up on the forum many times before but not on this particular thread, and it is unquestionably superior to the dreary original

Also punk heads probably disapprove of Nouvelle Vague but I do like this one

Thanks for the heads up! iPlayer link to save anyone else the search, Euan Hastie is at about 1h06 but it all looks worth watching/listening to. I concur that the Markbass rig is Michael Mondesir's and Hastie isn't using it. I don't think I've seen anyone play upright left-handed before, have I missed anyone notable who does this or is it rather unusual? -
Is the GPA-100 not loud enough to meet this spec? Apart from the Speakon that is. Amp heads should definitely have a 9v power output though.

I’ve got one of the cheap ones from a UK eBay seller and it’s ok, but I had to mount the bare board on a bit of wood to make it practical. It does feel as if there’s a gap in the market between the eBay bargains and the Peak kit. Although I follow Peak on twitter and they’re clearly thoroughly good eggs so I’d feel guilty.

If you went into detail on all the topics above it’d be a textbook! I can think of a few specific questions I’d be interested in: - intercompatibility of the different types of Speakon and where they’re used - what gauge of wire to use for what speaker power - what to look out for when choosing cable e.g. which are suitable or unsuitable for instrument and mic leads, etc - solder or screw terminals, given the choice? - use of gold plated connectors, if available?

Well I hope it’s not the next thing I’ll see live, but we’ve just booked for Aldous Harding at the Albert Hall Manchester in April…

I’m still working very slowly through Scott’s technique course and I’m doing a selection of the exercises from the lessons I’ve watched so far, then playing with a couple of jazz tunes on iReal. Biggest problem (hence the ‘very slowly’ above) is making sure the practice actually happens rather than continually putting it off because there’s something else to do, until the something else to do is that it’s time to go to bed 😕 Oh, kit: Zoom B1 Four, into a little Spirit mixer and headphones. Using the mixer is quieter than running line out from the computer into the Zoom’s aux in and gives me pan controls so I can separate my bass from Scott’s when playing along to a lesson, for example.

I know nothing about video editing but the big difference is a 2018 model will run the latest Mac OS (Ventura, just released) and hopefully one or two more versions after that, whereas the 2012 one is stuck on Catalina which is largely out of support now. In fact it looks like the 2018 m3 is faster than the 2012 i7, at least on benchmarks. You can look this stuff up in mind-boggling detail at everymac.com.

‘Tchuh’ I thought, ‘I bet it’s Windows-only though.’ It is not Windows-only! Thanks for the tip and I’ll be happy to contribute measurements of a Laney RB-500H and a Marshall MB15…

Anyone else expecting this thread to be about Leslies? What is a 'half-open' cabinet anyway? If it's not closed or reflex then it's open, right?

Hi Gary! You should be able to get yourself a decent setup within that budget, at least to start out on - have a look in the Bass Guitars and Amps and Cabs sections to see what people are recommending at the moment.

Unless I've missed it we need a shout out for Kim Clarke of Defunkt and also Ruth Goller of Melt Yourself Down and (very differently) SKYLLA

Derail but… that would be all the iPhones from the 5s (being generous and assuming Jobs’s influence took a year or two to wear off) to the 14? Are you sure?

Wow, best of luck to @stevie with this venture! Will be interesting to see how it fares as a commercial product, how it reviews not 'for a DIY project' but on a level playing field with the big names. Which I am sure it will hold up very well to.

À propos of nothing, part of Audio Kitchen is Kendra Jane Frost who played bass for Lonelady on her last tour.

I have to inform you that…

…or for next time someone tells you the bass player never gets the girl

Stompz - A Zoom compatible programmable midi stomp controller

There are tricks for using a digital PIO pin to measure an analogue resistance value by charging and discharging a capacitor through the resistance and measuring how long that takes. Or if you have something like a 555 (preferably a CMOS version) or an op-amp lying around and can knock up a little analogue circuit, you could make an oscillator whose frequency varies with the resistance, and measure the frequency. If you have a Pico you don’t need for anything else right now though, I’d just use that for speed. You could always substitute a proper ADC in later… or just get another Pico when you need one, which will probably be cheaper! -
Someone else might have a cab with the same nominal impedance as yours, but a higher actual impedance, so they'll need a bit more voltage out of the amp to realise the same power. Someone else might have a less even (er, 'more dynamic') playing style than you, or use less compression, so choose to set the input gain lower to avoid the light coming on, so need more output gain to get the same power. If I were an amp designer I'm sure I would want to leave some margin for each of those sort of possibilities, rather than risk someone complaining (these days, on YouTube) that my amp 'won't go loud enough' for them.
