An adult man who can sustain a BPM around 70% of what he achieved in his teenage years can consider himself a proper ****er.

Just been looking at wikipedia's list of Metallica tours. In the first 8 years he was in Metallica, 1986-1994 they performed over 600 times, touring Master of Puppets, Justice and the Black Album. I'm sure JN found that more than just financially worthwhile and left him feeling useful.

In 1976, Dave Murray, who came from a poor family, paid $1400 for the late Paul Kossoff's Strat. The pound fell against the dollar a lot in 1976, but for a while in the middle of the year it was bobbing around $1.75, which would make the Strat £800. £800 at £22/week would be just over 8 months of work. A 19 yr old now gets £6.56/hour. 8 months of 40-hour weeks at £6.56 would be almost £9,500. I like this detail from wikipedia - when Dave Murray auditioned for Iron Maiden, they already had two guitarists, Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance, who disapproved of his being permitted to audition, seeing it as a slight on their ability. Steve Harris: "when the others made it plain that it was either them or Dave Murray, there was no choice." He might be a gentle soul, but he must have known he was worthy of that guitar. I wonder how long it took him to realise that he was wanting to replace the pickups with Di Marzio humbuckers?

Recently I was trying to work out just how expensive to an unemployed 19 year old a famous late 50s Strat was Dave Murray bought his. As far as I could see from prodding around online, in 1976 a young lad doing an entry level job would be earning about £20 a week. Does that sound about right?

I'm very much of the opinion that we should all treasure our own desires, so I'm definitely not wanting you to rethink this opinion, but a highly characterful pickup with a strong clear personality is what I find desirable. (And then to do as little as possible to the sound further downstream, except gently flatter it.) Edit: sorry for the thread resurrection! I had quite forgotten that I came across this thread when searching for something..... 😬

The similarity between the two says something about how Fenderish the most recent generation of BB pickups are. I found that the difference between the Jazz and the BBP became more apparent as the video went on. I wonder if that's just my ears tuning in? At any rate, after I had heard the PJ being replaced by the JJ a couple of times, I knew for sure which I preferred. Definitely just a subjective preference though, and I can see why some might think the JJ more suitable to the music being played.

It was a turning point for me in my life when I realised that my conscious thoughts were just pointless fluff getting in the way of my brain doing the other 99% of its responsibilities. I know where I'm not wanted. I can't decide first two minutes of this picking is inspiring or dismaying:

When playing with fingers, my two spare fingers and the thumb, quite without my asking them to, started working out how to mute things very nicely. Presumably they're using the bit of my brain that works the sustain pedal on the piano. Whenever I try to take a peek at what they're doing, they tell me to sod off and mind my own business. When I play with a pick, though, they can't do this, so I have to diligently think about how the edge of my right hand does the mopping up. I can't wait for my subconscious to work out what's going on and take that over. Until then, my playing with a pick is all rather plodding
