Non standard pickups. And getting rid of the 424's bridge pickup would definitely be a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. One solution would be upgrading the 424 neck pickup to a 1024, but given how expensive they are, it would be more sensible just to get Squier P. I felt that my 424 was great at being a BB and not much cop at being a P. I notice that the opposite is true of my P.

I wouldn't trust Hermes with pre-loved loo roll, and don't really understand why they're used by anyone to send anything.

I finally worked out a plausible explanation of the nonsense of 8lb 3oz / 3.9kg — it's just a typo, and should be 8lb 13oz. 8lb 13 oz = 3.997kg .... which, if one is utterly innumerate, can be rounded down to 3.9kg Is this what's going to happen to me? Buy a lightweight bass and receive one that isn't? Who knows 🤷 But the part-exchange experience really was very pleasant. Very fair, and no messing.

It gets comical: Advert A: Fender Precision 1978, 10lb 5oz/4.9kg Advert B: Fender Precision 1979, 4.8kg/11lb 0.1kg lighter = 11oz heavier 🙃 Peach Guitar's approach — taking a photo of the bass on the scales — suddenly seems very sensible

Speaking of their Indonesian basses, I recently tried a TRBX174, which is Chinese-made. The difference in quality between that and my BB424 + TRBX604 was quite stark. Not realising where it had come from, I was quite shocked by the idea of the Indonesian factory churning out such budget stuff.

Last year I sold a bass through BD, commission sale. The price they / I eventually got for that bass was not what was being advertised on the website, which tells me that BD listen to offers, especially on something which hasn't shifted immediately. I haven't looked at 424 prices since I bought that one, so I don't have an opinion on what they're asking, but I do know that with the exception of a ding I spotted the day I received it and never noticed again, it's in excellent condition, is a joy to play, and, like all these Indonesian-made Yamahas, is still phenomenal value for money. I spent a lot of time chewing over the idea of having the body stripped down, reshaped, chambered and refinished — which tells you how much I liked that neck! 😅

Just had an very enjoyable part-exchange experience with Bass Direct, but while it was going on, I noticed that their ability to convert kg into lb oz is rubbish. 1) The bass I'm getting was listed in metric as 3.9kg 2) that's rounded to 2 figures, so the weight is somewhere 3.85 – 3.95kg, which translates to 8lb 8oz – 8lb 11oz 3) the conversion they give is a very eye-catching (and thoroughly unrealistic) 8lb 3oz Heaven knows what the truth is. I had a look at the weights in a few of their other adverts, and bizarre conversions seems to be their standard m.o. Lots of pinches of salt needed, if you care about such things (my gefukt shoulder does)

The BB424 that Bass Direct have just put up for sale used to be mine — they took it in part exchange, so it's no longer anything to do with me. It's a lot more resonant than any other bass I've owned.....but are all BBs like that? Action is nice and low, 1.5–1.8mm, iirc. Again, are all BBs like that? 🤷 It's strung with new set of GHS Boomers, which I found suited it more than either Swing Bass or Roto Bass. It's clearly had a very gentle life. I played it almost always with both pickups on – to me they sound designed to balance each other, and bass seemed much happier like that. (The bridge on its own with the tone down almost all the way is quite entertaining, in small doses!) Only sold it because my injured shoulder can't take trad BB shape/weight any more, loved its neck, and its perky character.

I had a 424, which generally I played with both pickups on as I found the same thing about the P pickup soloed. When I then bought a Squier P, I found that it made a sound stronger and more characterful than the BB's neck pickup, and played the basses equally.

I had thought the correct answer to Nice amp would be great 2x10 cab

Trying to remember what buying and selling I've done. Early on, I bought Gramma pad from thebrig and a Line6 multieffects unit from Rich. I bought hooky_lowdown's Squier Matt Freeman, despite that ad saying withdrawn I sold the pickup from that bass to Can'tthinkofausername, who asked after it when he read that I had replaced it.
