  1. The morning after a long night on the JJ, I was sat on the Frank, waiting for something to appear out of my Cilla, when suddenly I did huge Stevie all over the floor. Oh, the Kids From!
  2. Curiosity killed the cat, I know, but I quite want to hear two octave scales played on that.... 😬
  3. Musicians shouldn't be allowed to play their hits, and the public shouldn't be allowed to listen to them .... if the public wants to listen to them playing their greatest hits ....
  4. I would be worried by someone offering me some of their Primal Cream
  5. I think EMI had strict rules about how much bass could be in a vinyl release. The details are very sketchy in my memory, but I think it went as far as restricting the equipment permitted in the studio, and was to avoid damage to listener's speakers. I might be terribly muddled though. Is this ringing any bells? PS my attempts to Google my way to locating this memory failed, but en route I found this interesting story about the Paperback Writer bass sound
  6. As well as the solid reason for having the Beatles In Mono box set — that everything sounds better — there's also the nice detail of getting to avoid owning Abbey Road and Let It Be 😎
  7. "So, we've two options. Either each of us get paid a 25% less so we can hire a chippy, balding guy in a hat who's never on the beat, keeps trying to add notes and bangs on about wanting to cut through the mix." "Or....?" "Or we buy this pedal."
  8. There are also Low Tension, Jamerson, Hofner etc sets. Everything is here
  9. Presumably because this is stock bought before the recent price rises, Bass Direct still have many of the 760 sets at prices that are now unusually low. I've weeded out those marked Out Of Stock (yeah, no FL or FM-S left 😔) LONG SCALE FX (39/56/77/96) - £40 FS (45/65/85/105) - £40 FM (49/69/89/109) - £40 FX Throughbody (39/56/77/96) - £40 FM Throughbody (49/69/89/109) - £40 FSB (45/65/85/105/128) - £52 FMB (49/69/89/109/128) - £52 FMCB (29/49/69/89/109/128) - £60 SHORT SCALE FL S (43/60/82/104) - £40 FS S (45/65/85/105) - £40 FLB S (45/65/85/105/128) - £52 MEDIUM SCALE FX M (39/56/77/96) - £40 FS M (45/65/85/105) - £40 FS Throughbody (45/65/85/105) - £42 EXTRA LONG SCALE FL XL (43/60/82/104) - £40 FS XL (45/65/85/105) - £40 FM XL (49/69/89/109) - £40 FLB XL (43/60/82/104/128) - £52 FSB XL (45/65/85/105/128) - £52 FMB XL (49/69/89/109/128) - £52 FSCB SL (29/45/65/85/105/128) - £62 FMCB XL (29/49/69/89/109/128) - £62
  10. Went through their LaBella 760 flats page and weeded out the Out Of Stock items LONG SCALE FX (39/56/77/96) - £40 FS (45/65/85/105) - £40 FM (49/69/89/109) - £40 FX Throughbody (39/56/77/96) - £40 FM Throughbody (49/69/89/109) - £40 FSB (45/65/85/105/128) - £52 FMB (49/69/89/109/128) - £52 FMCB (29/49/69/89/109/128) - £60 SHORT SCALE FL S (43/60/82/104) - £40 FS S (45/65/85/105) - £40 FLB S (45/65/85/105/128) - £52 MEDIUM SCALE FX M (39/56/77/96) - £40 FS M (45/65/85/105) - £40 FS Throughbody (45/65/85/105) - £42 EXTRA LONG SCALE FL XL (43/60/82/104) - £40 FS XL (45/65/85/105) - £40 FM XL (49/69/89/109) - £40 FLB XL (43/60/82/104/128) - £52 FSB XL (45/65/85/105/128) - £52 FMB XL (49/69/89/109/128) - £52 FSCB SL (29/45/65/85/105/128) - £62 FMCB XL (29/49/69/89/109/128) - £62
  11. If you avoid picking up a bass, ever, then you won't even have to shell out on a set of flats.
  12. Whilst searching out demos of specific sets of strings I came across a guy called Juan Modesto, who has only done a handful of short videos. I’ve listened to this one, demoing the RS77LD set of Roto flats, dozens of times. Really lovely playing. Those are very high tension strings but you wouldn't think it from the seemingly effortless way he gets so much bite out of them. Love the way his head bobs about too
  13. Yeah, I thought about that after posting 👍 Even my ££££ G+L didn't feel right until it had been set up to be just what I want in terms of action, gauges, and pickup height. Which leads us back to the original point of the thread, the important thing is not that people are playing cheap or expensive basses, but that they're playing basses that are well set up for their needs.
  14. I only had that album for about a month as someone stole it from me at school. Recently I listened through it, and found that this unusually mournful song was burnt very clearly into my memory:
  15. If you buy a cheap instrument and spend your money and/or time getting it just how you want, then it's not a cheap instrument any more. How my used Squier P plays and sounds now I've invested £££ in it bares no relation to how the Squier I took down from the wall in gear4music plays and sounds. If the factory producing Squiers put the same time, effort and attention into every instrument they make as my tech has put into mine, then they would be selling at a very different price point.
  16. Killers is my favourite of Maiden's classic era, and some days So Far So Good So What reaches me in ways none of the other early Megadeth albums do, and I think they typical come bottom of their respective piles? Oh, I knew I could do better than that! Jane's Addiction. I love Strays to bits and I couldn't care less about any of their other albums.
  17. I don't recall any. I do remember thinking that the tuners weren't equal to the excellence of the woodwork and finish, but I didn't notice them falling away from me BTW, my P-esque SB-1 is only 7.2 lbs, and that has no neckdive either.
  18. A third option would be to wait for a lighter PB-62. Bassbros list them regularly and they go as light as 8.0 lbs. That 2015 one I've linked to was mine for a day* and the build quality was wonderful, better than my USA G&L, just immaculate. If I still had it, it would now have a set of La Bella flats on it, it had that kind of character. *to my intense embarrassment, I learnt that reaching round the extra curve of a vintage style radius causes real bother all the way up in my damaged shoulder — the problem was solely with me
  19. Listening to demos of the Triad left left me wondering what the neck or middle pickup would sound like with La Bella flats
