  1. Assuming that the 13mm I measured with a plastic ruler was actually 12.7mm, that would be a proper murican ½" Googling suggests a pre-CBS P will be nearer ⅝", over 15mm. Thicker wood supporting the thing holding the string steady has got to have some effect, but I can't get my head to work out what.
  2. The BB neck is at least 1mm thicker than the P's, so I'm not surprised the designer continued in their ways with the headstock. The BB feels a lot more rigid than the P (and also than my TRBX, which was also laminated) and that does seem to transfer itself to each note's attack. Perhaps more in how it feels than anything actually audible. I dunno. I do know that I wish the bass was lighter. Last autumn, whilst unpacking some boxes with an arm benumbed from a vaccination jab, I ferked my shoulder. For the time being, what had been just about manageable isn't
  3. I was peering at the BB, trying to work out how come something could both be a bit on the heavy side and also have a bit of head-dive. Once I put it down, my eyes went to the P, and immediately I noticed a difference. Perhaps the gloss on the Squier also makes it look more svelte? I've been trying to work out if, theoretically, the thick 424 neck could be put on a body that was both lighter and better balanced. What I'll do, of course, is sell it sooner rather than later, and then spent decades whining regretfully about having let the most comfy neck I ever met go.
  4. Random titbit of info (I'll spare you the boredom of learning how come I know this) — the headstock on my 424 is 1mm thicker than the headstock on my Squier, 14mm vs 13mm.
  5. Fortunately, freelance witches are available at very reasonable prices 😁 I had a go at attempting to mod the electronics of my guitar when I was 17: with hindsight it's a miracle it ever produced another noise. Never again!
  6. Very neatly made instruments. Gently used, mine was about the same price as a new Marlin Sidewinder.
  7. "If you get pops or glitch sounds when hitting the kill switch, solder a 1 megohm (1 million ohm) resistor in parallel with the switch."
  8. When a pot is turned down to zero, what is silencing the bass? Would having the switch go between that and a bypass cause any problems? When I took the battery out of my TRBX, there was no pop when switching between passive and dead active.
  9. Active guitars.....a bit weird...... I bought it because it has the lowest action ever seen on guitar, and spent years hating the electronics (and the natural finish) But 008 strings, a bridge humbucker and a 15 year old boy are going to get by ok, despite all that coil-splitting, phase-reversing bass-cutting nonsense.
  10. The guitars too, or just the basses? (asking on behalf someone who hasn't played his Thunder I-A with any seriousness since he was 16)
  11. Have you put the serial number into this?
  12. I know that often you enjoy buying unfussed by the knowledge that the bass will be on its way sooner rather than later. Is this one of those instances, or do you have aspirations of longevity for it? PS at the five-tuner headstock sitting in front of Jaco "only needing four"
  13. Thank you, first for the answer and secondly for adopting 'two-bobbed'. Since the bass has a maple fretboard, Pro Steels, a Model P pickup, and a 0.022 cap, a bit more brightness wouldn't exactly be fighting its character When I had an active bass, I took the battery out, turning the active/passive switch into a kill switch. I think that's the thing about that bass I miss the most This can go on the Definitely Maybe pile.
  14. The volume pot on my P is 250k. It is always on 10. If it was replaced with a simple on/off switch, what if any effect would that have on the instrument's tone? (Supplementary question: if in the US a knob turned to 10 is "dimed", in the UK is it "two-bobbed"?)
  15. I didn't bother opening this thread, being slightly allergic to the word tonewood, but when youtube proffered that video, I realised what it must be about. Fantastic video. I also enjoyed this comment:
  16. A nice, broad range of short demos of it in this video, from 1'55 to 5'35" (and it's good to hear someone talking naturally on YouTube for once)
  17. The Steinway reference was intended to be connected to the supercar analogy: I was once (and once only) given a lift to a performance in a supercar. It was uncomfortable just to sit in, and an even more uncomfortable ride.
  18. Each time you pick one out, it reminds you of that lovely feeling of opening the box on a new bass, thus stoking your GAS?
