  1. Wielding an allen key is as far down this road as I'm prepared to go
  2. Just prodded around with a wooden skewer. It went in just under 2cm for both basses. The BB only has that same space again for access down by the heel, so I'll need to be careful the short end is just the right length.
  3. I haven't an allen key for either my BB424 or my Squier P (it's a Matt Freeman sig, so basically a CIC CV) The Squier TR is adjustable up beyond the nut. Apparently that's 5mm. The BB is adjustable down by the neck pocket. I found an old TB post saying that the BB414 also needed a 5mm allen key. I'm also unsure how long / short they need to be to reach their way to the truss rods.
  4. What size allen key will I need to adjust the truss rod of my 424❓ I'm going to try changing from GHS Bass Boomers to Fender 7150s. Since both sets are 45–105 hexcore rounds I'm hoping the neck won't even notice the difference.
  5. After 11 months and 2 days, the pickup toggle on my BB moved to the left. I didn't see it coming, but with hindsight I'm not surprised, as I rarely enjoy the sound of two pickups blended — too much of my favourite bit of the tone disappears for my taste. I shall be trying out a set of Fender 7150 all-nickel hexcore rounds, perhaps they will help the toggle rethink its decision. Or at least stop being quite so decisive.
  6. It means people who put things on hold gladly don't necessarily keep to their intended path when someone else offers another £100
  7. Best not help temptation be put in the way of virtue
  8. More people read threads than post on them, I wouldn't leave a link to an ad you're not able to buy immediately sitting here
  9. I had this daydream ..... a one humbucker bass with 4 knobs and a switch .... with the switch off, the humbucker is in series and goes to a passive tone .... with the switch on, the humbucker changes to parallel and goes to a classic stingray clone 2 band EQ .... the idea being that either way, the sound is getting something extra. Perhaps the downfall for this daydream would be that the two different sounds would want two different pickup placings? But that's getting a long way from BBs, sorry. I have been trying to find demos of PJs wired in series. Haven't found anything good yet.
  10. On a Telecaster the additional series option is often called position 4 – when you've got a standard bridge-parallel-neck switch, adding a 4th position for series is extremely easy from a wiring point of view, and the physically the Telecaster switch is like a Strat switch and so doesn’t mind having a 4th position. The 3-way toggle of a 424 would present problems On a Jazz, the series option is called an S-1 switch, iirc. I'm hazy on how that series switch behaves with two seperate volume knobs. My guess is that once they're in series it's like having two Master volumes in a row? Perhaps the standard mod includes bypassing one of the volumes? 🤷 Anyway it seems having a separate switch as a pull-push is the standard way of doing it on basses. One way of hearing the basic difference in tone is to listen to a demo of a G&L Kiloton, which has a switch that goes between having a the two coils of its humbucker in series or parallel. The extra thickness of the series sound is very obvious. I've not read of anyone adding a switch like that to a Stingray – perhaps in series its humbucker would lose its sting?
  11. For several months I’ve had a P as well as my BB, and recently have been wondering if getting used to the sound of the P had been moving my tastes along a bit. In particular I seemed to be hearing a slight scoop in the BB tone that I hadn't detected before. And it's been bothering me. And I've just realised that I've been taking the heavier right hand touch that the P has encouraged me to play with, and using it on the BB as well — and that's been wiping out the warmth of the BB's tone. As soon as I told my fingers to think properly about which instrument they're playing, the balance of the BB tone came back. When laid into, the BB (both pickups, GHS Boomers) starts to sound clangy, especially low down. When played with a gentle touch, the P (Dimarzio Model P, Fender 7250s) sounds insipid.
  12. I just made a mental list, The 1000 Bassists Who Best Express The Glories Of Masculinity Through Their Playing, and strangely enough, there's no sign of Adam Clayton.
  13. So here, there's no suggestion that the bass looks anything other than its size, but that it's nonetheless carrying itself with ease and charm – there's nothing oafish or clumsy about it.
  14. Interesting to see how much difference you would experience if you swapped the 424's split coil for the 1024's
  15. Putting two pickups in series totally transforms instruments which I otherwise find a bit sonically underwhelming, eg Telecaster guitar. I would have been very interested* to hear what my TRBX would have sounded like with the humbuckers replaced with fat singles wired in series (*but not interested enough to spend a fortune screwing up its resale value)
  16. Idle question.... has anyone tried wiring the P and J pickups of a typical BB in series? I'm guessing it would be too much of a good thing.
  17. It is dispiriting how angry and/or scornful some consumers who have their every whim catered to are made by other consumers getting what they want.
  18. I think the temptation is past the worst, but the patient is still vulnerable.....
  19. Obviously, I wrote that before seeing this sub-9lb Ray34 for sale at £700
  20. Presumably the top 5 Bassists of 2021 are all youtubers
  21. If it's any consolation, I've read people saying of their new Sonic Blue SB-2, there's a lot more green in this than I was expecting.
  22. When I look at that last photo, I can hear the wood calling out, stain me red, I beg you. I think
  23. It took me a while to learn never to put any context to my threads, as to avoid having to spend time discussing decisions I had already made and actions I had already taken.
