  1. Trying to remember if I still have any friends who like doing crosswords. Added to the mix, Fender Precision doubles the root (10, 5)
  2. I believe the seller enjoyed being the person who would help my luck finally turn 😊
  3. Definitely a good thing for me. I shall be sure to give the Wilkinson bridge the occasional grateful glance I thought I recalled reading a little grumble somewhere about the stock electronics being a weak spot. Well, that's great pair of things to hear, thank you very much. I've not the experience to give a useful objective opinion about the bass, but I know that I'm happy with everything about it I don't know about a P being all the bass you could ever need, but right now this feels like all the P I'll ever want. On Monday I got a Hotone Ampero multieffects unit. One of patches I had created is Xotic RC Booster + Alembic F-2B preamp + David Eden 4×10 — through that the bass is sounding effortlessly commanding.
  4. Just out of curiosity, do you or @hooky_lowdown know how much of an upgrade (or not) the Wilkinson bridge and the KiOgon loom constitute? The specs say the stock is "4-Saddle HiMass Bridge with Brass Saddles". To be honest, I could happy live with normal shiny knobs and bridge, but I'm delighted to have a pearloid pg instead of the stock black And knobs and bridge do match the all-black pickups. Much better than half one way, half the other. I've just remembered — you're having a Dimarzio Model P put into the P you're having built, aren't you? I'm really enjoying its tone — strong without changing the essence of the P sound.
  5. Searching Bassassin Matsumoku Vox seemed worthwhile and found me this post
  6. The neckplate on my Westone said it came from Matsumoku:
  7. This modded 2010 Matt Freeman was on sale here for a bit, and then got withdrawn, but when I asked nicely, @hooky_lowdown very kindly sold it to me anyway. I think these were built alongside the original Squier CVs — CIC, with a CGS serial number. In transit, the jack had slightly rotated, which in the narrow cavity stopped its spring from allowing a lead to be plugged in — which tbh was good, because it made me get on with taking it to my local tech, Chris at Wintaura Guitars to be set up as I like it and have a Dimarzio pickup fitted. I got it back last night. The neck has developed a tiny bit of an S at the first fret, so we decided to give the bass a new nut as well, to give the strings the chance to get clear over the first fret easily. That means that, aside from the neck and body, the tuners and jack are the only original parts left. So: 42mm / 1.65" Tusq nut 9.5" radius, 'modern C' profile action 1.60mm - 1.90mm Dimarzio Model P pickup unknown pearloid pg & black knobs @KiOgon loom Wilkinson bridge Fender 7250M 45-105 rounds slightly over 9 lbs I've been playing a BB424 the last six months. Relative to that, the P has a lighter body and a wider flatter neck. What struck me first though was the difference between the two split pickups. The BB split is slightly nearer the neck, and much less hot, making a soft dark tone, so that the stern, guttural sound of the P came as a complete contrast. With the TRBX I bought last summer out of the way, on sale at Bass Direct, I now have a pair of similar-but-different basses, both right for me but with characters that are clearly differentiated in feel, sound and looks. I feel very nicely set.
  8. I was browsing through the 80s albums' track listings just now and noticed something I had forgotten: Adrian Smith had previously written in partnership with Bruce Dickinson, but on Somewhere In Time all of his three songs were him alone. I don't know anything about either of their personalities or how their songwriting meshes when they're working together, but clearly writing on his own brought out something different. The lyrics are all quite sad and tender. I finished writing that and immediately thought how sweet it is that Bruce Dickinson then sings them very nicely. Definitely no sulking for having been left out. I think they're the most successful tracks on that album, the rest is a little bit Steve Harris pressing the right buttons on the Steve Harris Songwriting Machine.
  9. Another layer of confusion: one or two of the Sterling by Music Man Stingrays have the same Jazz-like thin nut as the Ernie Ball Music Man Sterlings. But the Music Man websites don't list nut width 🤦‍♂️ The LowEndLobster YouTube bass channel has done masses of videos on the SBMM Ray24 and the SBMM Ray4, stripping them down and modding them and says that they have more in common than you might expect from the price difference. Eg
  10. Something for you to get all Dave Ellefson over
  11. The jealousy won't kick in until the pg has turned parchment / mint / pearloid
  12. Red! £300! Comes with hard case! Barely used! Aaaaargh! Come now, Ricky, it's just some paint. Bah.
  13. Because I've so little knowledge of the equipment that the Ampero is emulating, it's taking me a while to learn how to understand the names for the effects, for example.... Those three plus Ampeg SVT and 8×10 sims should get me to the right place for a kind of mid-80s Craig Adams sound, right? Right.
  14. Bought myself a Hotone Ampero, it arrived today. Have built four patches and ahhh the user interface...lovely Were I a serious guitarist, not a leisure bassist, I would have gone for the Headrush Gigboard, but I decided the additional functionality it offers would have just make me feel small
  15. Firstly, it's arrived Secondly, it works Thirdly, the user interface is generally as pleasant as it seemed from demos Fourthly, I managed to make one patch that I'm pretty happy with, immediately Edit: and a while later, I've made three more patches that, while in need of fine tuning, are already making me happy. Although this larger Ampero has 4 foot buttons, only one of them is for turning an effect (or two) on/off – the other three buttons are just for going between a set of three patches. Hmm.
  16. I've just enjoyed the experience of getting my bass up for sale with them, and the cherry on the cake is that they really know how to capture the delicious subtleties of a good looking pile of wood
  17. iirc there was a Bitsa P for sale here recently which had a NW neck. Was it the Shoreline Gold one? Edit: yes this one, sold by @Sibob
  18. At the chorus, around 1'10", when the bassline finally goes up to an A natural – F-G-A-G-F – the right hand of the piano is supposed to be going in contrary motion, but still in the minor – Ab-G-F-G-Ab. Here the piano is just doubling the sunny F major of the bass and it sounds naff af
  19. Always wanted to get Duran Duran into a metal thread
  20. I've just been totting up what I've spent on bassy things in the last 12 months (2 Yamahas, 1 Squier, 1 Dimarzio, 1 failed attempt to buy a G&L, 3 set ups, 2 multieffects units, 1 studio monitor, 1 case, 1 pickup, 6 picks, 3256 strings, leafs, stands, straps, straplocks etc) Amongst that carnage, the £300 spent on the 424 I've played the majority of that time is seeming thoroughly insignificant. Which is my long-winded way of saying, hurry up and get that bass bought.
  21. I love Paul Di'anno for playing air guitar left handed
  22. The standard line on TalkBass is that Daddario make Fenders strings, but to Fenders own specs.
  23. If you at Andertons terms you'll see that they supply untouched instruments as standard. If you want it looked at before shipping, you have to request it. If it's been on display, they'll forewarn you. Presumably they've had enough of people complaining of things not being box fresh.
