  1. Fortunately heavy enough to inhibit my foolishness 😅 For some reason the CV 60s P on sale atm is gnawing at me. Again, the neck would be much too broad for my comfort. But perhaps that's part of the strange attraction.... 🙃
  2. That Cort was definitely a bass I should NOT have bought....and yet the regret, the regret..... 😅
  3. I did hope to restrict it to just BassChat adverts 🤔
  4. EDIT: to play this game best, a link to the original advert would be lovely 😊 Firstly I didn't need a p bass in my life, secondly a 1¾" nut would probably be far too much for me.... ....but I can't forget this Cort sold earlier this year. I love the combination of pale colour, white pg and maple neck, and I love the Di Marzio sound, and I definitely like the idea of a 7 lb bass. And it went for £155!!! Gah.
  5. In February, prompted by Cliff Burton Day, I decided it was high time I filled in the big gap in my knowledge of 80s Metallica. The internet being how it is, I was soon persuaded to buy the first four Megadeth albums as well. Prior to this year, all I knew about Dave Mustaine was what the inlay to Kill 'Em All told me. In the subsequent 3 months I have listened to virtually nothing else*. Right now, I'm listening to Peace Sells. Once it's done, I will have spent 100 hours** of this spring listening to these eight albums. This is how the plays for each album have distributed themselves: 32 - Killing is my Business ... 30 - Peace Sells ... 28 - Rust in Peace 25 - Ride The Lightning 15 - So Far So Good ... 8 - ... And Justice For All 7 - Master of Puppets 4 - Kill 'Em All At my age of life you don't expect to fall in love all over again, but then I had no idea Dave Mustaine was waiting for me. I need to post something for you to listen to, so here's a bass and drums only version of Bad Omen. From 0'55" it's very special. *The only other music getting much of a look in is Mozart's "Haydn" set of 6 string quartets **If we could pretend that some bit of software is doing the calculations automatically, that would do my self-esteem a world of good
  6. So I've just learnt that (i) a Rotosound 105 can be bent up two semitones at the 3rd fret (ii) my fingers have no intention of getting into the habit of doing it. Ow.
  7. I'm enjoying my first set of steel 66s, and am eager to try the nickel 66s too, I hear they too have a good strong character
  8. My single data point: My TRBX came with Daddario 45-65-80-100. The G and D seemed excessively bright relative to the A and E. By changing the lower two to -85-105, I made them more taut and thus brighter; the evenness across the instrument improved (that's a very subjective thing to say, I know!) I could have dropped the G and D to 40-60- to achieve the same thing, but decided I like a nice taut string ------- edit: immediately after writing that, I picked up my BB, which is strung with the traditional Rotosound 66 set: 45-65-80-105. Since I was still thinking about what I had written, I noticed that the relatively lighter gauge A lacks the bite that the other 3 strings have, and has a warmer, more bottom-heavy tone.
  9. When I was 13, I wanted a bass, but got talked into getting a guitar. Last summer, halfway a lifetime later, I gave myself permission to do what I had always wanted to do. You can imagine how much I've loved this story 🙂
  10. Thank you for that, but I've decided against restoring it to stock.
  11. ....so long as it's possible that's okay, I would be paying someone to build a harness (and someone to fit it, too)
  12. Dont think of your own music in isolation, but learn it meshed into everyone else's, then your notes will flow naturally from what's going on around you (also, listening to other people is a much more fruitful way of occupying your mind than worrying )
  13. If you've no opinion on the wiring issue, feel free to be scandalised by my considering having the body of this painted this a̶ ̶n̶i̶c̶e̶ ̶d̶e̶e̶p̶ ̶r̶e̶d̶ ̶ Spanish Copper Metallic
  14. The Westone Thunder I-A guitar I played as a teenager wants sorting. Originally it had a complex active system, but in a foolish moment aged 17 I tried to bypass all that. By some miracle it still makes a noise — just the one, mind.... On the upper horn is the usual three-way selector switch for the two humbuckers. Below the strings are three knobs and three little switches. I've been thinking what to do with them. Knobs: V-T-T Switches: a coil split for each humbucker, and a series/parallel switch for when both pickups are on. I like the sound of two single coils in series, so that seems a useful set of controls. To me this seems lovely and simple, but then, what do I know? Nothing.
  15. If I didn't have a P-style bass on its way I would be wanting to upgrade my 424 to a 1024 or 2024 to get that soloable P. The 424s seems to be a bit 2D.
  16. My BB sounds great as a PJ....but kind of dull with the P soloed.... Wonder if that's the secret to a good PJ... More seriously, am wondering if the plentiful experimentation included PJs with reverse P pickups?
  17. I think a variable is how quickly your enthusiasm drops off when you move away from your sweet spot. For example, I love Brahms chamber works, but am pretty uninterested in either the rest of his output, or in the chamber music of his contemporaries. Similarly, I've spent 2021 happily obsessed with Megadeth but still have no interest in listening to any Anthrax or Slayer. If it's not really doing it for me, I can't be bothered. How the various small patches of my enthusiasm relate, I haven't a clue. Looks pretty random to me. 🤷‍♂️
  18. Given how bassfacts normally evolve on the internet, it's probably something to do with Leo Fender's top-end hearing loss
  19. To save anyone else whose brain only does basses in imperial measurements reaching for the calculator: 8lbs 5oz
  20. Here are the tensions for CFBbEb tuning on GHS's only set of short scale flats, to give a vague idea: Eb (.045) 23.4; Bb (.060) 21.0; F (.075) 17.3; C (.095) 15.3; Total: 77.0 Here are their full scale flats at the same gauges tuned EADG 34" scale: G (.045) 41.5 ; D (.060) 46.5; A (.075) 38.5; E (.095) 36.7; Total: 163.2
