This looks like a pleasant way to spend an hour.

Just listening to the radio and Professional Widow came on (yep, Radio 6). Made me chuckle because back in the day that was my 'Hey, I'm the bass player, I'm the guy that's gonna make you wanna dance" line for the sound check, that and Respect Yourself, both licks guaranteed to get a positive reaction from an audience (all three of 'em). Just me or do we al have a little bit of bass magic we throw in to let the audience know that we're there?

BTW this booth is larger than the standard 1.2x1.2m vocal booth the builders offered because I wanted it to comfortably accommodate two people talking podcast style (informally seated on a couple of stools), or a small drum kit. It does both well. It would be a great way of kicking off a podcasting or voiceover business ๐
-
So, we moved house about 3-months back and it's unlikely that this booth is going to be rebuilt, at least not in the near future. I was aiming to have a 6x4m wooden cabin built as a small/informal studio but it now looks like there will be a more ambitious approach and hopefully I will start to convert a large outbuilding next year, part of which will be sound insulation and a built in vocal booth. Further, while I'm tempted to keep it, this sound-booth is now somewhat in the way, so I need it gone really. If this is something you'd be interested in, I'm very happy to entertain discussions around price, or about trades/PX, it's a very high quality unit for the price and allowed me to keep an income stream during lockdown. Full disclosure, it is VERY heavy, it took four strong removal guys to get the ceiling off so you'd need to plan for this, as well as a minimum of two strong folks to move each piece also. I could arrange some folks to do this at my end but it would be up to you at yours

That is no joke, had an awful gig on fretted before Xmas with a guitarist constantly going out of tune and so wished Iโd picked up the fretless ๐ค

Lovely, I wanna put names to faces @wateroftyne -
I've got four fretless basses two of which wear flats. No better or no worse than rounds, just different. Both types of string are good for finger style and slap on fretless, but I much prefer flats if I'm using a pick. If there's one advantage flats have over rounds on fretless is that the bass is less likely to have that characteristic fretless envelope, so if I'm playing a gig on fretless but don't want to sound like Jaco/Pino (tongue in cheek there BTW, perhaps I should say 'even less like Jaco/Pino'), I'll use flats ๐

Your best bet starting is a board that will be resilient such as ebony, especially if your playing roundwounds. Maple boards are glorious but they chew up quickly if you're not careful

Fretted and fretless: same instrument, you can play either like Jamerson or like Jaco. OK there's a few things you can do on fretless you would struggle to do on fretted, but the differences are nothing like as significant as it seems and you only have to listen to Jaco playing the same lines on both instruments to realise that the the frets or the lack of them were not the defining feature. For me, playing a gigo n fretless without anyone, even the band, realising and assuming I'm playing fretted, is something I will always love doing ๐

I never use a stand, even the best stand can be pushed over, so bass is always on its side, and following knocking of my bridge leaving a venue a few years back I always have an escort in and out of gigs, asking punters to make way for the bass player Having said this, at a festival 10 years ago we soundchecked and I asked the soundguy where was the safest place to leave the bass. He showed me a spot behind the backline that he said no-one would go near. Five minutes later there was an ominous crash and swearing as the very same soundguy fell onto my DB., literally lying on top of it. No damage to the bass at all, he limped for several days apparently. I used to take an SLB to every gig not just for damage back up but for those occasions where feedback is too much of a problem. Fell out of love with the sound of the SLB however so now just take a fretless bass as backup ๐

Add to that list 4. You are prepared to suck up all incoming courier costs, tax and duty plus return courier costs if the bass is faulty and you need to return it 5. You are aware of the local (state) law of the seller which may mean you are screwed even if they are 100% at fault 6. You accept that even if the bass is 100% as described, if you donโt like it you will probably make a big loss if you sell it within a few years of buying it I fell foul of 4 and 5 in 2008 and 6 in 2009 and will never buy a bass from the USA again
