  1. Your best bet starting is a board that will be resilient such as ebony, especially if your playing roundwounds. Maple boards are glorious but they chew up quickly if you're not careful
  2. Fretted and fretless: same instrument, you can play either like Jamerson or like Jaco. OK there's a few things you can do on fretless you would struggle to do on fretted, but the differences are nothing like as significant as it seems and you only have to listen to Jaco playing the same lines on both instruments to realise that the the frets or the lack of them were not the defining feature. For me, playing a gigo n fretless without anyone, even the band, realising and assuming I'm playing fretted, is something I will always love doing 👍
  3. As we both know Jack, there is no feedback-free solutions, simply less risk of feedback solutions 👍
  4. I never use a stand, even the best stand can be pushed over, so bass is always on its side, and following knocking of my bridge leaving a venue a few years back I always have an escort in and out of gigs, asking punters to make way for the bass player Having said this, at a festival 10 years ago we soundchecked and I asked the soundguy where was the safest place to leave the bass. He showed me a spot behind the backline that he said no-one would go near. Five minutes later there was an ominous crash and swearing as the very same soundguy fell onto my DB., literally lying on top of it. No damage to the bass at all, he limped for several days apparently. I used to take an SLB to every gig not just for damage back up but for those occasions where feedback is too much of a problem. Fell out of love with the sound of the SLB however so now just take a fretless bass as backup 👍
  5. Add to that list 4. You are prepared to suck up all incoming courier costs, tax and duty plus return courier costs if the bass is faulty and you need to return it 5. You are aware of the local (state) law of the seller which may mean you are screwed even if they are 100% at fault 6. You accept that even if the bass is 100% as described, if you don’t like it you will probably make a big loss if you sell it within a few years of buying it I fell foul of 4 and 5 in 2008 and 6 in 2009 and will never buy a bass from the USA again
  6. Too many projects and this is one that probably won't get finished. Lovely and authentic looking and feeling wear by @d_g of this parish, original listing here Dan's pictures do it more justice than do mine but here's a few more..... I've also added a bridge, which is one of these and is very nice https://reverb.com/uk/item/15763833-retrovibe-fully-compensatable-bass-bridge-for-51-precision-string-thru-brass-saddle-19mm-spacing Other parts are..... - 51P Slab Alder Body finished in ocean turquoise metallic with heavy relic - Bareknuckle 51P pickup - Bareknuckle jazz bridge pickup - Reverse wound and reverse polarity to the neck pickup so that they hum cancel and sound like a jazz bass when both on - Gold anodised style pickguard (not actually anodised but looks the same) - Fully working P Bass Tone circuit with three way switch for neck/both/bridge pickup - Relic screws - String trough ferrules (very difficult to buy!) - Relic output jack cup Bridge was close to £60, body cost me £295 so how about £325?
  7. https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Phil_Jones_Bass_Preamps.html Bought from Bass Direct in late 2022 but I've recently bought a pre-amp for live/doubling work that does everything this can do (although it has to be said the PJB still has the edge on tone). Probably had 5-hours use max, all cables, case and original packing included, will post photos of the whole shebang tomorrow 👍
  8. Yes, VVT, have tried tracking back but not quite as clear to me as I'd expect, just want to make sure there are no surprises before I get the soldering iron out PS I think you're spot on re an active tone circuit. When I first bought the bass, and as per a previous thread on here, I was a little underwhelmed. It took playing pretty loud and fiddling around a lot with both the balance and tone of the PUPs plus EQ on the amp to really bring out the magic. Most of that would be captured and made far easier in an onboard EQ 👍
  9. Doesn't appear to be no, I suspect the previous owner has done some messing about with the circuit as the soldering in the front cavity isn't quite the level I'd expect from Sims
  10. Thanks @BigRedX, here's a closer view of the Simms circuitry, not sure whether that makes it less versatile, seems pretty impressive but interested in your thoughts?
  11. Any thoughts on what this push/pull pot might be intended for welcome ?
  12. Thanks Andy, yep I know how to install a J-Retro to a normal PUP configuration, I might be wrong but it looks like there are one or two extra wires coming into the circuit above. It’s possible a couple are redundant as the pull pot also appears to be. Either way I’m a little reluctant to pull out the existing circuit until I know what everything does. Might give Simms a call today 👍
  13. PS I'm very happy to post this plus it has the original Mesa carry case 👍
  14. Owning this and the TT-800 would just be greedy mate
  15. Very nice, feels like the car chase soundtrack in an Indie movie 👍
  16. That's helpful, thanks, i pulled out the control circuit and yes it's clearly passive albeit with a pull switch the front volume pot that appears to do nothing. It's not immediately clear to me which wires would go where on a J-Retro, I'm used to simpler things, not sure there's enough info here for anyone to advise?
  17. Thanks @Andyjr1515 and @BigRedX. As far as I can tell this version has the active circuit that balances the changing PUP outputs but a conventional passive circuit, but I will do some checking and photography this evening and report back. Thanks for your help 👍
  18. Thanks Andy, that's my thinking, my main concern is of any potential interaction between the J-Retro and the circuitry associated with the Quads to be honest, any thoughts (can't see there could be a problem but then it's about 40 years since I learned anything knew about electronics so.......)?
  19. Hi @Andyjr1515, many thanks for the above. I have what I believe is an early Enfield fusion FL that also appears to be passive in terms of tone controls (I say appears because I'm not expert on what the circuits do). I'm looking to fit the J-Retro in the front cavity as would normally be the case, the body has a standard Jazz route.
  20. He also has this Jaco-related item at a bargain price of $850, frankly I'm not sure if this isn't even worse than the bass https://www.ebay.com/itm/113728005656?hash=item1a7ab7a618:g:Jd0AAOSwxUNhLnWI The face in the drawing really reminds me of someone, just not Jaco
