1972 Jazz Bass - Verification of a few things
Beedster replied to TheStarsmith's topic in Bass Guitars
Most of the original finish mid-70s black Jazzes I've seen have finishes that were heavily cracked and falling off in lumps. No idea as to whether Fender had some issue with black finishes in that era, but whenever I see a relatovely decent black finish on a mid '70's Jazz it looks wrong (oddly I've not come across a Precision with similar issues)? -
1979 Yamaha Pulser - Made In Japan - *SOLD*

I had the same model in a natural finish, and the comparison with Fenders of the era (late 70's) doesn't stand up I'm afraid. The Yamaha was infinitely better. Very good materials, very well engineered (built like a tank but not especially heavy), well finished, and evenly balanced across and up and down the strings. Lovely instrument. And as is always the case when I've found a really good bass at a decent price, I sold it in order to buy something far more expensive and of much lower quality 🤔 -
Sadly Tim, the driver in question, let me down very badly in failing to make an agreed pickup that was time critical, not bothering to tell me he'd missed it until I chased him, at which point by phone he agreed to cancel the job and refund, but then when chased again refused to refund by suggesting it was all my fault for being up tight in expecting collection on the day I'd paid £325 for him to collect. He then told me to take him to court because, quote 'He wins all his court cases'. Following my trying to resolve and us agreeing a settlement which covered his costs - which we pretty decent of me frankly - he still did not pay as agreed. He then, when chased for the final time, pulled the classic 'Can you be patient, I'm going through some personal issues' excuse. In short, he might be fine when things are going well, but when they don't, and like a few luthiers mentioned in other threads on this forum, he ducks out of his business responsibilities, tells lies, makes accusations, and blames others for his shortcomings. @walshy is aware and tried very hard to resolve things. If you choose to use this guy, you've been warned.

That’s a nice looking instrument but at the price I’d wait for something verifiably authentic and original to come along, it’s a buyer’s market at present 👍 -

That’s a very good point Tony, I stand corrected 🙏

Until about 2-mins ago I had no idea this existed, but now I do, it seems the worst of both Worlds; a fretted bass that's gonna be way harder to play than a standard EB and probably not sound anything like as good, and an upright bass that doesn;t do any of the magic that a standard upright or even EUB can do on account of having no frets. Sorry if that wasn't much help

A very special customising job for Happy Jack

I mean, yes it's unlikely to ever be the go-to for the gigging pro, but I've seen worse. We've all seen worse............

Fixed it for you Luke 👍
-
There's a lot of truth in that 👍
-
But think how boring life would be if that wasn't the case
-
Not sure any of that's true, there's quite a few for sale now and always tend to be, they're as popular as Jazzes (the main competition), more popular than 'rays and derivatives, and way more popular than Rics

Must be, I lost a fiver in the late 80's, a mate of mine found a fiver in 2002 a few streets away, I made him give it back to me
