I think that while generalisable quantitative parameters such as 30 years can be used to define 'vintage', among musicians it more often describes a golden age, perhaps more like a wine. For example, I might be wrong but I see the word used a lot to describe 1070's Fenders/MMs/Rics - at least one of which had a golden decade in the 70's (I'll leave that up to you reader) - but less to describe, for example Carlsbro' or H&H amps from the same period, neither of which IME had a golden 70's. Probably a very subjective view

Are bank transfers safe to buy goods from here?
Beedster replied to lushuk's topic in General Discussion
You're right Steve, none at all, likewise PayPal friends and family. If in doubt always use the standard PayPal with fees which allows you to secure a refund. This of course - ironically - means that as a seller you have to also be. a little careful who you sell to if using standard PayPal -

...and amusingly I've had at least a couple of sellers say "I don't do PayPal because I don't like their morals.....". Yet they're still prepared to use the banks -
I think it looks fine, for me it's the edges as much as the flat surface that bring the sense of authenticity, and those edges look good to me Brian. Some pickguards really do look rubbish and are to be avoided by all conscientious bassists, but given the majority that aren't, it's best not to overthink them or we find ourselves in a situation in which no pickguard is ever good enough

There are people on here I know and trust with whom a bank transfer is no problem at all. There are other people I don't know so I check their feedback thread, and given the place that Basschat is, there's a fairly good chance that several members have dealt with them successfully, which is reassuring. In other cases, if I'm buying blind so to speak, I'd need an extra layer of security provided by PayPal, in which case I pay the small % transaction fee so the buyer gets the total amount. When a seller I don't know or doesn't have feedback says "I don't accept PayPal, it's bank transfer or nothing", it tends to be the latter- 43 replies

Another band with the same name?
Beedster replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
I was gutted when my band Led Zeppelin discover a namesake 😡 Move on, new name, it is only a word 👍 -
I guess that like any material, it's only as good as the person or machine that did the building. I had an ebanol boarded fretless and it was like playing glass, felt way better than most of my wooden boarded basses and very similar to s Status Graphite fretless neck I had at the time. And that's about as good a comparison as you'll get I think

A Tale of International Shipping
Beedster replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
To be honest Steve it's the whole thing, but mother of pearl was a new one on me, especially given the bass in question has some, or at least appears to 🤔 -

Well, I was about to export a very valuable instrument (by my standards at least) to the US....... -

Yep, Paul Di'Anno on vocals, my ears are still slightly ringing. Undoubtedly one of the best gigs I ever saw..... ....but it was as long time before anything they did on tape got close. When they played Sanctuary and the band came in after the guitar intro, I thought the building was coming down, and I don't think i was alone

Welcome, sobering to realise I first saw Maiden 46 years ago

That's rather funny

I had to buy a domestic appliance (god I hate those two words) a while back and the Curry's website let me put it in the basket but wouldn't let me actually order/pay. I checked out the problem and it appears it was something to do with the settings on my laptop in the context of their web protocols. I tired to contact them but couldn't for the same reason so bought it somewhere else. Internet eh?

I suspect this is a placebo thread

It feels like a whole new generation of musicians have reached 'that age'. We've seen a lot of 60's and early-mid 70's pass on, but I still see bands like The Jam and their contemporaries as young men because I'm the same age. God bless the human brain and it's denial circuitry. RIP Rick, you were a largely unsung hero of some of the most powerful songs and albums ever recorded. I didn't always like The Jam's music, and I doubt I'm alone. But I doubt anyone who's serious about music and culture could deny its quality, its honesty, its impact, and its importance 🙏

So you've had it 19 years and now you're worrying about the fingerboard, or have I missed something?
