True point, my BB2024 was one of the few P/J's I've owned that really delivered, but whilst the tone with both PUPs mixed was glorious solo'd, I still tended to gravitate towards towards the P-PUP in a band mix. Probably more about the course than the horse however

Good man, I sold all my fretted basses and how have a Jazz FL with rounds and a Precision FL with heavy flats. I seriously don't need anything else to gig and record. There are lines I can’t play well on a fretted instrument that I can play well - perhaps better is more accurate - on a fretless, Rhythm Stick being a good example. Jaco always claimed to practice on a fretted neck and perform on a fretless because the former was slower and harder to play. I completely agree with him

I doubt Fender Precisions cost a whole lot to build these days either

I love the idea of P/Js, but despite lots of experimentation in practice and rehearsal, in live and recording situations I always end up using the P-PUP only. It's perhaps a function of the music I play and the ideal sound in my head of course, but I find the back J-PUP far more useful when it can be blended with another J-PUP than when blended with a P-PUP. Only exception for me has been on fretless perhaps, when a solo'd back J-PUP can come into its own (all my opinion of course).

I was never all that keen on these guys when I first came across them, but it's a funny thing, the more people appear to get angry at their success in threads like this, the more I like them

Wowza, lovely; something tells me that bass sounds very little like a Jazz Bass Not sure they're the PUPs I'm thinking of as those don't look like they'd sit under a JPUP cover?

Ha ha, no I was thinking ‘That’s a Jazz Bass really’ Re PUP I feel your pain, a Nordstrand ‘51 SC (forget the model name), essentially a PB single coil in a Jazz case might be better although they come in pairs only I believe. When I had the same problem I used a P-Retro to give some h**t to the back PUP when needed. But it’s a Precision, all the PUPs it needs are located closer to the neck than the PUP in question

Am I losing my marbles or didn't this same discussion happen in relation to the same model bass a while back? Are EBMM simply issuing them 50 at a time a year or so apart?

Yep, big part of the issue (or non-issue) is the terms 'Precision Neck' and 'Jazz Neck', which are generalisations at best (OK, Fender Jazz Basses usually have thin 38-40mm nut neck, but so do many Fender Precisions). Manufacturers such as EBMM and Ric vary neck width across instruments without the dichotomous labels. What made me chuckle reading this thread this morning was that there's often talk here about just how boring Fender's 2-model line of basses is, no real innovation or improvement, yet it seems - given that most of us probably own one or other, and given that about 80% of the basses ever produced were one or other - we, the worlds leading forum of bass connoisseurs, can't actually agree on what makes a Jazz and Jazz and a Precision a Precision My view, the defining characteristics in order are 1. Pickup: single split coil for Precision/twin single coil for Jazz) 2. Body shape 3. Neck width: 38-40mm neck will feel like a Jazz Bass to the player 4. Colour: A Precision should be 3tsb/tort and a Jazz black/black 5. Strings: Precisions should always be used with heavy steel flatwounds 6. Bridge: a Precision with a Badass is of course an abomination 7. Circuit: a Precision with an active circuit is likewise an abomination OK, I'll admit it got a bit subjective from 4 onwards

I'm not going to agree to the new T&Cs, they need sellers more than they need buyers (they can make money out of sellers items not selling, they can't make money out of buyers with nothing to buy), so I'm pretty sure that after a few weeks I'll get an email saying "Hey, we've decided we'll let you carry on as before....". And if they don't, as above, there's other options. Ebay has become a complete PITA for sellers anyway, I had a buyer file an 'item not as described' case a few weeks back and ebay didn't even refer it to me before finding in his favour. Turns out what he meant was "I bough a Mac interface but I have a PC". Frankly, I'd have refunded him anyway if he'd messaged me, but the fact that eBay took that decision out of my hands was quite alarming. At least under the old model the money was in my bank because I/ always transfer out of PayPal immediately, and they couldn't touch it, but I suspect under the new model there's the risk that in similar situations they will simply take the money back out of your bank account, which will be a bloody nightmare. I should also add that when they found for the buyer as above, a link on the email they sent me said "Refund Now" and in small print underneath it is said "If you do so you not expect to receive the item back"! If it happens to you, do not click on that link folks
