  1. Just had the pleasure of a two-hour, albeit socially distanced, meet-up with Nik, in which we discussed all things bass, music and life. Who needs a therapist when there's guys like Nik around? Many thanks for your time mate, great to chat. Here's one of the moments we discussed; one of the great performances, and at the time rumoured to be one of the most expensive edits in movie history
  2. American Trad series were a hybrid of Mex and USA although I forget the finer details. They are great instruments, forerunners of the Highway One series (as mentioned by Karl in the original FS ad)? I think the one I owned a while back had a single strat-style pick-guard and no chrome control plate
  3. Good, too much stuff doesn’t get called out but should. I’ve a few nice versions of PMT I was going to post re the member in question but I’ll keep them to myself
  4. Second of my basses to go in my Covid sale! A bass identical or at least extremely similar to that Bakithi Kumalo used on Graceland, and although it's probably in my head, the lines from that album do sound rather authentic on this bass (perhaps as the result of it's having won the 'Who can get the P and J pickups furthest apart on the same instrument?' competition'). It was originally white and has faded to a rather attractive (apparently) nicotine yellow over the years. Since the photos were taken the bridge was swapped for the original, I'll try to get some photos up of how it looks now tomorrow. As seems to be the case with pretty much everything that came out of Japan in the 80's, it's quality is outstanding and on a par with far higher priced current instruments. Some comments on this bass and further details from people who know more about it than I do in this thread......
  5. Onboard feels like part of the instrument as opposed to part of the amp. I prefer it hugely
  6. It's not just about investment, it's also about emotion and sentiment, of getting back in touch with (and possessing) part of your childhood and the dreams you had then. Why do you think YOB (even MOB) basses are such a thing! As a 12 year old a Fender was an impossible dream, hell a Satellite was a dream then (I dread to think what brand my first bass was). I'd sit and look at the ads in various magazine and those images and those dreams got into my DNA. There's no financial or even musical logic here - 90% of the vintage basses I've played are easily outclassed by modern instruments costing 80% less - just the curious logic of emotion.
  7. Glorious, what used to be called a real man's rig in the days when such terminology was permissible
  8. Thanks Dan, just a bass mate, although a rather special one, and as I mentioned to Andy this morning, the only bass I've ever ordered as opposed to simply bought, totally due to the photo at the top IIRC Hope all's well Chris
  9. Way If things pick up then I'll withdraw it, as well as the numerous other things I'm going to have to sell (I've already sold my Mesa Titan). Problem is that my work until March this year was based largely in France, so we've taken the double whammy of Brexit and Covid. I keep telling myself that it's just bass gear and that I can always buy it again if business improves and we start gigging. I also keep telling myself that what I've just told myself is bollocks and I shouldn't sell any of it in the first place
  10. Business and finance issues, mostly Covid related, force the sale of this and a few other bass-related items, if things change before they sell, then they will be withdrawn. I ordered this from Modulus in late 2007 IIRC, inspired by the identical instrument I'd seen Flea playing....... I'd previously owned a blue sparkle version that whilst lovely, was a little too much of a statement for the type of gigs I played at the time, so wanted the Modulus Flea 'thing' with a more vintage vibe. This fit the bill 100%. I sold it when we were expecting our first child, and as things go on BC, was able to buy it back again from Walshy earlier this year. Its condition suggests that it hasn't been gigged a whole lot if at all, in fact it's pretty much immaculate, with the exception of the obligatory small dink to the very end of the headstock (and it really is very small). I'll need to dig out my old emails/receipts to confirm exactly which PUP/circuit is installed, but as I've said in previous posts, Flea Basses tend to sound like Flea Basses irrespective of PUPs and circuits; lovely fast attack, superb clarity and consistency across the strings and the board, and almost limitless sustain. I'm asking what I paid and the price is firm. I'm not interested in trades or PX, sorry. I'll upload more pics later when the kids/dog are less energetic
  11. And twice Welcome mate, I assume you don't need the sofa any more?
  12. Depends on how you see the role of mods, on some forums they're there to keep things on topic, here they keep the peace
  13. I agree with the OP. I've found over the last few years that if I want technical information or opinion on bass gear I tend not to see Basschat as my first port of call for this reason. Whilst the community spirit is an upside, the downside is that off-topic banter it can make it very time-intense to find the information that you need. Talkbass is better, but still suffers from the same problems to a degree (although there the problem is more often antagonism between members than community spirit). A lot of threads here also become post after post of action/reaction "I did it and it worked perfectly" followed by "Well I did it and it didn't work at all", which means they run and run without really providing an answer to original question. Difficult one, I guess the mods spend most of their time stopping off topic going bad and policing the marketplace and don't have time to occasionally remind members that the thread is about bass/gear/music and not whatever it has become about. I wonder if some of our more experienced and informed members (and moderators?) spent less time in OT and more time opining on matters bass/gear/music this would be less of a problem
  14. Sorry folks, to me this is simply 58 pages of flipping ugly basses
  15. EBay is nearly always safe as a buyer unless you’re unlucky enough to come up against a scammer who sells you a dud, and when you return it, claims you’ve returned a different item. Happened to me two years ago, took a long time to sort and has made me wary of high value purchases there. If I were going to buy a used bass these days it would be on BC or possibly from a reputable dealer
  16. These days most of the bargains on eBay are those listed as 'local collection only', simply because it reduces the market significantly (prohibitively in some places), and also because most people would prefer the bass to arrive by courier than have to drive to collect. Bummer if the item is in Penzance however!
  17. I completely agree with this, but it relies on the 'if' factor! Yes, if the OP is playing short-scale (and same scale length short scale at that) exclusively then this is a very good idea. I have identical Warmoth fretted and fretless Precision necks and when I play either a lot, the other is generally a lot easier to play also (my intonation is a lot better on my FL Precision neck than it is on my FL Jazz neck, I suspect for this reason also). When I spend a lot of time on either double bass, acoustic guitar or mandolin, my fretless intonation nose-dives.
