  1. Great buy BB Just scratched a Mesa itch of my own, albeit as an indirect result of this thread. Had I not done so, the Venture would have been on its way to Canterbury
  2. It's why we have the feedback forum. If you've tried all reasonable paths to resolve the issue please name and shame, at the very least it stops the same person doing it again to someone else, and might even help you get some compensation
  3. I realised recently that I can't, especially if it's my fretless Jazz versus my fretless Precision (both with flats). In fact I was going to start a thread about it but realised it would just have turned into this thread, which let's face it, is nothing new! I should add that I find it slightly easier with fretted versions of Js & Ps as I tend to play rounds on the former and flats on the latter.
  4. Jazzes are very good for reggae. So are Precisions
  5. Which to 99.9% of anyone listening to them is 100% true. My band are far more likely to notice differences between flats and rounds or 2x10 and 1x15 than which bass is actually creating the notes, and all other things being equal, most half decent players can make a Jazz sound like a Precision and vice-versa. I suspect tone is only a small factor in preference; I prefer the simplicity of Precisions but mostly like fat necks. Had Jazzes come with fat necks as standard, I might have preferred them.
  6. And yes, as above, PJB are also heavy for the size and power
  7. PJB do not tick any of my boxes these days, ahead of the game 10 years ago, on which basis I bought several of their products, but behind the game now, and IME underpowered by comparison with almost everything else rated at the same wattage. If you need lightweight look at Barefaced cabs and pair with a Class D head of your choice.
  8. It’s called heft And yes, a certain degree of lower back strength is required
  9. Best bass amp ever, paired with a Barefaced Super Twin it’s the best bass tone I’ve had
  10. For comparison..... Fender Custom Shop Jaco Relic at around £3,500 https://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_jaco_pastoriustribute_jazz_3sb.htm Fender Artist Series Jaco Tribute at around £2,140 https://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-jaco-pastorius-jazz-bass-fretless-3-colour-sunburst/2245?gclid=CjwKCAiAi4fwBRBxEiwAEO8_Ho9hJsaiCaW10xJDyBGuyuDy71YD-7CFuwTnNmurai6wm1o7EXfHgBoC0OYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
  11. 100%. Buying a vintage instrument is as much about confidence in the seller and demonstrated provenance as is is about knowledge and experience of the instrument itself.
  12. My sentiment exactly, that Venture is literally screaming my name
  13. Apologies for being slow with details on this folks. A few details pending taking it apart and getting some gut shots. Components: Body, neck, PUPs, neckplate, bell-plate and circuit are original. Tuners and bridge are not original. There is no pickguard. This appears to have been a concerted attempt at replicating Jaco's Jazz, albeit some time ago. Finish: Finish on body is all original. The back of neck (nitro) and board (epoxy) have been refinished, the latter having been either defretted if it's the original (which seems unlikely), or replaced, which seems the most likely story. Note that neither the front or the back of the headstock have been refinished. Overall: Stunning, probably as close as you will get to a Jaco Jazz without buying the Bass of Doom. It's a very responsive and subtle instrument, to my ears and hands a significant step up from Jazz Basses I've played over the years. The obvious point of reference is the Fender Custom Shop Jaco Relic, which I owned for several years, and which I'd say pales by comparison with this bass, which is also significantly lighter (I'll confirm weight when I take photos). I'm in no great rush to sell, but if we're talking cash, I'll take £2500 firm, no offers. I would prefer collection in person or meet up to both ensure that the buyer is happy with the bass and to minimise the risk associated with couriers. However, if the latter is the only option, it would nee to be sent fully insured at buyer's expense. I should be able to post some close-up/internal photos tomorrow, apologies again for the delay, I don't want to be taking this apart in a rush! Cheers Chris
  14. Man, I’d love to get the Venture combo again, best combo I’ve ever played, albeit one of the heaviest and hardest to move!
  15. Been thinking about projects and bands for 2020, so a few other potential trades/PXs...... Modulus Flea/Pre EB 'ray Ric c64/v63 Takamine B-10/TB-10
  16. The finish on the FL boards could be better IMO
  17. I’ve owned five, and to this day I’m unsure why I sold two of them, C64 and a 4003FL. All I have to add to this thread is that there is a lot of nonsense talked about the ric sound, the 4003s are easily as versatile as any twin PUP passive bass, and can do dub just as well as they can do clank. A 4003 with heavy flats, played with a pic through a B15 is about as iconic a bass tone as youll get - powerful rounded bass, slightly subdued mids and sweet highs - it’s like a fine wine
  18. It would be great to think that they could reclaim that dynamic, perhaps it needs JF to go away and come back again - each time perhaps renewed or refreshed to the point that he's able to be so heavily involved? Looking forward to hearing the next album either way
  19. That's a decent point Bilbo, I guess I had always seen fretless as so much harder irrespective of other factors, and it was really odd to find that frets, fat from being the solution to my technique as they had often in the past, were actually getting in the way!
  20. Hope it goes well Clarky, the World needs more of your type of music mate! C
  21. In my experience, a heavier bridge is about different tone, not necessarily better tone. I had a Precision a few years back that had, to my ear, a nasty undertone to some of the notes, it wasn't a rattle or a buzz, it was a very subtle but once heard very annoying artefact. I 'upgraded' to a Badass II, and it got a whole lot worse. Given all the variables - type of bass, woods, PUPs, strings, amp, style of play - a new bridge can go either way. Only one way to find out though!
  22. Hi Sumatra, Yes, epoxied. I’ll fully update the rest of the details with photos when I get the chance. Cheers. C
  23. Seems a bit daft to list this as trade only as there's quite a few nice old basses out there for sale at present, so I'll happily talk cash offers for this lovely old Jazz. Also happy to discuss PX with anything nice and old, 4-string basses (especially old Fender or Yamaha), 6-string guitars (especially Fender electric or Gibson acoustic). Cheers C
