  1. Yes, the Walkabout is a special amp, it's going to be really interesting to see how the newbie measures up
  2. Tone wise they're more similar than I'd expected, but it's soooooo easy to dial in a lovely low-mid-PBass-with-flats tone on the Walkabout, the Prodigy EQ seems pretty crude by comparison, and I'm not a great fan of the 'voice' idea either. I wouldn't say the Prodigy is more aggressively voiced, it certainly seemed a little more pronounced at the top end. Having said this, the Prodigy is a pretty amazing piece of engineering, and given it doesn't weigh a whole lot more than the Walkabout, and has the same footprint pretty much, it's one hell of a 250w all-tube amp (and it has the switchable 125w option also).
  3. Having just picked up a Prodigy, and having A/B'd it with my Walkabout, I would love to see the lovechild of those two amps, there's the magic of the Walkabout tone circuit, and those lovely Prodigy power tubes
  4. Thanks both, no issue with the drivers being diagonally aligned with one another then? Cheers Chris
  5. Interested to know peoples' thoughts on this arrangement of two 2x10s?
  6. Thanks for the responses guys, I A/B'd my two Mesa 2x10s with a few heads yesterday and, to my ears (and that's the key thing here I think), there was a loss of bass when stacked vertically. I'm guessing it was simply an increase in mids/highs plus the fact that these were hitting me at closer to ear level than I'm used to (I'm mostly using just the one cab on the floor). However, the upside was that I could really hear differences between heads that I perhaps might not have done using conventional horizontal layout. Main thing I learned yesterday? I miss my SVT. Ludicrously heavy, and a complete pain to rehearse and gig with, but nothing makes bass sound better. Might not be all that safe on top of a vertically stacked rig though
  7. Having done a bit of playing around with my two 2x10s, I’m interested in people’s preferences, experience, and thoughts. For example, is bass response enhanced when they’re in classic 4x10 formation? Cheers Chris
  8. You're all fired, I'm bringing back Big Beef Chief as head moderator
  9. Hi mate, no it was about 11.00 this morning, but it did mention Google, I didn;t spend much time checking, just shut it down quick
  10. I've used the recent B-15 reissue - essentially the same head as this albeit rated a little lower watts-wise - with DB and it sounded fantastic. I posted about it somewhere on the site, I'll see if I can find it. Either way, the combination of that lovely tubey bounce and the natural dynamics of the DB was pretty special.
  11. Spot on mate. I'm currently playing with a very loud drummer, and I thought I'd use the Mesa Walkabout rather than this. It turns out that there is not a whole lot of difference, at least not as much as I'd expected, so have opted for a Mesa Prodigy, which is a monster of a unit. So I have too many amps! This Ampeg is not a monster, but it's tonally perfect; there is a simplicity and no-nonsense vibe about it that I much prefer over my bigger amps. There's part of me that thinks I should sell the Walkabout and keep this, which I have to admit I more leaning towards as time goes on. The advantage with the Walkabout is a more versatile tone circuit, but hey, I play passive Precisions with flatwounds, there's not a whole lot of places to go tone-wise
  12. Can I take the pickguard and thumb rest Walshy? Cheers Chris
  13. Ha ha, thanks mate, I keep doing the opposite to be honest, i.e., keep telling myself I do need it, but there are a few too many tube heads round here as it is
  14. FCS Reggie Hamilton 5 was one of the best instruments I’ve ever played ever. Why did I sell it .....?
  15. Hi mate, apologies, but I replied to your post above so assumed you would have seen that. Cheers Chris
  16. Bass is sold but P-Retro and Badass are still available, I think £125 is fair for the P-Retro and £60 for the bridge, I will post pics of each on this thread later today Cheers Chris
  17. You can pick up used USA SVTs for around £600, wait a while and these non-USA Ampeg’s will be very very cheap. The days of big tube heads are sadly behind us
