FS: Hughes & Kettner Bassmaster **SOLD**
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Thanks Harry, happy new year mate Likewise thanks Nik, and likewise happy new year. Yep, it's got lovely tone, I'm using it with a 2x10 Mesa cab and it's perfect for getting decent tube tone without any shouts form the wife/kids/neighbours! I haven't used it as a pre but mostly because my amps are all tube, but might give it a try anyway! Cheers. Chris -
Folks I need to get my garden studio insulated and if there’s any money left over, need to buy a head with a little more heft than my current unit (we tried getting our drummer to use lighter sticks but he just broke them all). So, I’m going to list in this thread loads of stuff that has been sitting around in various cupboards, drawers and boxes for several years, as well as a few things I’d rather not sell but which don't really get used that often. All prices include postage, but please be patient, there used to be four Post Offices within walking distance of my house and there’s now one, and that’s just been ‘upgraded’ to an automated service that even the folks who work there don't fully understand. In short, postage might take a week or so! Happy to haggle, but no trades thanks Loaded bodies Warmoth Jazz Bass body loaded/Dimarzio PAF Jazz PUPs/Kiogon harness with series/parallel switching/standard BBOT bridge. This is a very punchy combination. Battery compartment on back will take two 9v batteries. ‘Any of you girls out there got any Irish in you.....?’ Rock n Roll personified. Met him a couple of times, seemed quite shy and humble. So many of his songs predicted how it was going to end. Sad loss.

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
Beedster replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Agreed, but keep in mind the V4-B is 100w, substantially lower than the WA, in theory at least. Having said that, my V4-B was a huge step up from the WA in every respect. -
Folks I bought this recently from Julian/Soulman. I have to do some work on my studio and could also use a new gigging head so much as I'd like to keep this, I'm going to move along all non-essential gear. It's a 5w all tube unit that will happily drive a cab at living room levels, that is you can get tube pre/power tone without the volume. It has a very pleasing tubey tone that and quite a wide range of EQ options, If you like tube tone at bedroom levels, or want to record a decent tube tone through a speaker, this is worth a try. There's a nice review by BC'er disssa here https://www.disssa.de/reviews/preamps/h-k-bassmaster/. Original manufacturer blurb here http://hughesandkettnermicroamps.weebly.com/batt--bass-master.html. Being very helpful people, they've even outline the full range of connection options on the case! When I received it the tubes were a little noisy so I've replaced them with a pair of new JJs. I paid £200 plus postage plus £40 for the tubes, so it owes me a few quid, but I'm happy to get it to you for £200 posted. Happy to haggle (a bit), but no trades thanks Cheers Chris

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
Beedster replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yep, but you’re selling the WA and have replaced it with an all tube head, so high heft, but not quite high enough? Dont’t get me wrong, the WA is a great amp, but I do see why folks talk about it being underpowered compared to all-tube heads. Whether the newbie will do the job remains to be seen. -
Well said

But that's the whole point, it's Basschat not Politicschat. I totally understand all the great debates - Flea v King, Jazz v Precision, 10's v 12's, BBOT v High Mass and Heft versus Class D - in that context. I simply do not understand why bassists feel the need to do politics on a bass forum? And if you ever find yourself feeling a little depressed by posts here, simply find the latest contribution from Skank and the world suddenly seems a far more reasonable place

Returning to Double Bass after a heart attack
Beedster replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely. There's a statistic out there somewhere that uses some pretty harsh language along the lines 'For 30 % of cardiac patients the first sign they have of a heart condition is death'. You've been very lucky Bilbo, you've had a relatively benign warning. This just adds to the mix. Not sure if you're medicated, but using the above example, beta blockers also upset your pacing, that is you can be going along feeling just fine and then suddenly you're light headed and feeling like you've run a marathon (this isn't true for everyone because we all differ in response to drugs). Drugs can also suppress symptoms that you're overdoing it/ So, in short, Lownote12's post is spot on, not only might you have not received a sign the first time around so why expect one second time around, but any drugs you're on my mask any signs even further. -
Why the f**k are folks stressed during the holidays? All joking aside, if you think it gets hostile here you're clearly not spending enough time on twitter. BC's a forum, a place where ideas and views can be exchanged. A big problem is not hostility per se, but that people confuse disagreement with hostility.

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
Beedster replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
I was using the 8ohm Walkabout combo with the matching Mesa 8ohm extension cab, stacked vertically. Compared to, for example, my SVT, and at similar volumes, there was no competition, the latter has everything I needed, the Walkabout was lacking something. Loud yes, h*** no -
New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
Beedster replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
I always found the WA started to lose something when the volume went up, lovely tone for sure, but didn't cut through anything like it could at lower volumes. Dare I use the h*** word, and say it lacked it at higher volumes? -

Returning to Double Bass after a heart attack
Beedster replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Bilbo, so sorry to hear the news, but very glad you're still here to tell us about it. Please do not think for one second that BC is the place to ask for advice. Nothing is worth the risk, least of all a gig too soon. You will have hundreds of gigs down the line, but you've got one heart, look after it mate. Cheers. Chris -
And the bass audition scene is pretty impressive also

Yep, The Story of Anvil is a great documentary - and very life affirming - but in terms of the real life Spinal Tap it pales by comparison with Some Kind of Monster
-
Absolutely. I might be one of the few people out there who's watched it twice (long story) and second time around - and having been involved in some similar TV work in the dim and distant past - I started to get a feel for the degree to which people on screen were being manipulated by people who weren't. The two brothers are both classic beneficiaries/victims of music industry success. Frankly there are probably only a small number of us who could say that in a similar situation a TV production company couldn't make us or one of our bands look equally petty and dysfunctional. Matt is in Vegas, and as is suggested by the early scenes, is likely surrounded by people who say yes to even the most ludicrous request or opinion. Luke is in LA, and whilst a little more grounded than his brother, I suspect his head is still in the clouds much of the time. I'm guessing the way the world is at present both are grateful to the production company for the attention, and will spin it all to their benefit, but I can't help feeling a little sad about it. A more intelligent take, Louis Theroux or similar, could have been equally engaging but could have left the audience understanding a little more of why and how Luke and Matt are where they are.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mesa-Engineering-Pro-Bass-Rig/253994307565?hash=item3b233d8fed:g:J5wAAOSwhexb9rsc:rk:5:pf:0 This is a monster rig, the guy's had it up for about two months now. It's a bad time of year to sell in a bad year for used prices generally, but even his start price of £1200 was silly money given the quality of this rig. Hope a BC member can get a major bargain here
