Why do people out "Best Offer" on their sales?
Beedster replied to prowla's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Or you're more likely to simply say 'sod it' and press BIN. The thing is, the moment you make the close offer, you start thinking that it's yours (well, not you specifically, but people generally). OK, it can have the opposite effect and make you so angry that you don't buy it. But you've still done the seller a massive favour, in that the fact that you've made a bid is there for all to see, and that increases the desirability of the item, and might encourage other people to think "Mmm, better buy this before the seller accepts that offer". People rarely buy with their logic, more often relying on their emotions, as eBay (and the BC marketplace) demonstrate daily -
Why do people out "Best Offer" on their sales?
Beedster replied to prowla's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Yep, it gets the brain of the buyer engaged, the dopamine flowing, and makes the sale more likely, which is exactly what eBay want; they certainly don't want items sitting around on their listings for months on end, even if they eventually sell for a few pounds more. Funny thing is that adding the Best Offer option can sometimes encourage a buyer to hit BIN, due to the worry that it might now sell very quickly and the possibility that even by making an offer you might lose out. -
The answer of course is that Leo created perfection, and no matter how hard you try, you can't get better than perfection. Why does it have four strings? Because that's all a Precision Bass needs. Need more, then you don't need a Precision, you need something else. There might be some more tangible/physical reasons also, such as that below (and having played a few 5-string Precisions - a few cheap ones and one very expensive model - I suspect there's a lot of truth in it). The same type of question can be asked of so many instruments; why were the 90's TRB5s so much better than the four string versions of almost identical spec? I always felt there was some magic about the former, that was perhaps not the result of the number of strings per se, but a by-product of it (greater neck mass, playability?).

Anyone plugged bass amp straight into subwoofer?
Beedster replied to Davo-London's topic in General Discussion
Yes, I've done it, and it sounds like mud. Imagine a '72 Telebass with the tone rolled off, played though a head with the treble back and the bass up, then into an 18' cab, and you're ball park. To my mind no usable tones even for reggae/dub. -
So, what does a Fenderbird sound like folks?

I've never owned or played a bad Stingray. Well designed, well built and great sounding instruments the lot of them

Glad it was a good one mate, music is very hit and miss in Canterbury these days, but the Turkish is good! I wonder who the mystery bass player might have been ......

Would you buy a bass from an eBay seller not responding to emails?
Beedster replied to largo's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd assume the answers are not what you want to hear! If there's a return policy, hit BIN. If not, don't -
Had a wonderful meeting with Gary in Wales a few years back. We both drove many many miles to be there, He bought along a bass to show me, for the simple reason that he was so excited about it. RIP mate.

They just don;t care? No, they just don't have the tools they used to have. It's all a massive commercial compromise (as is recording quality). Much more money to be made with lower touring (and recording) costs. The hype of lightweight and/or smaller speakers being better is just that, hype; they're just lighter and smaller.

Having said the above, there are rumours of live music at The Old City Bar tomorrow https://www.oldcitybar.co.uk/whats. Personally, that's about 2 miles too close to TfF for me, so I'd be looking to fill up on some decent Turkish at Al La Turka (Westgate, there's two of them) http://www.ala-turka.co.uk/westgate.php followed by a few pints of Bishops Finger in the pub of the same name next door https://www.bishopsfingercanterbury.co.uk/. It's my birthday tomorrow and Mrs Beedster is taking me for a quiet drink somewhere, or I'd join you! C

No one I know is gigging here, I have no basses for sale, and being at a certain stage in life rarely eat out (kids eat all of my money), I have to concede I can't be much help mate. Given the TfF event, Canterbury will be bustling with the sort of people who liked TfF back in the day, i.e., a bunch of middle-aged middle-class urbanites wearing clothes they shouldn't even have worn in '83 let alone now. Which reminds me: I used to play in a nice little bluegrass outfit, sort of thing that wouldn't offend anyone on a late summer Sunday afternoon down the Dog & Duck but which also allowed the aficionados to nod approvingly. We were booked to do a Friday night at a pub opposite the cricket ground. We didn't do our due diligence, and walked in to find a pub quite literally rammed with 55 year old skinheads - DMs, Harringtons, jeans rolled up to just below the knees, a certain 'atmosphere if you get my meaning. They had flocked to Canterbury that night to see Madness. So there's me and my three bluegrass buddies facing 200+ whizzed skinheads. IIRC we played four songs and did a runner; the landlord however was kind enough to pay us for the full set. So these days I tend to stay out of town when the big gigs are on, although I doubt the TfF bunch will cause too much aggro Have a great time mate C

The list of corporates with leadership who a) know what they're doing, and b) give a f**k about their market is sadly getting shorter every day

Fender and Gibson are really not endearing themselves to their market are they?

Wow, now seen the video, how could anyone have thought that was a good idea?

Absolutely
