1.
Well that's bloody nice, although I think I already have enough amps, that looks beautiful and I bet it sounds tremendous !
It's the only amp I've owned that gets close to the one I sold you Chris
2. Thanks folks. Should mention in response to a couple of PMs that it's sale only, no trades Cheers Chris
3.
That's the thing Chris, I'm debating it. I've actually put some gear up for sale as we speak. Don't know if I'd need a 5 or 4...and there is an FU5 In black too... I'm sure SIMS used to do some of the sparkle finishes for SMART distribution when they did Modulus...
Yep, I think that's the case. Martin did a Flea Bass a while back for me, incredible glass-like finish. Incidentally, I've got to go down there next week so could drop it in for you
4.
Just wish the Flea was a sparkle finish...
I loved my blue sparkly Flea until I took it on stage and all of a sudden it looked a bit, well, much, for me anyway. Perhaps not the right instrument for Chicago Blues? Can't find a blue sparkly? Buy this and get it refinned?
5.
My deciding factor is this: If I really wanted another SVT, then I can go buy one. Tomorrow. If I bizarrely sold my Shuker, it would take a huge amount of effort and there's a lead time to get another. I'd be in for a long wait and I couldn't get one second hand. - So, if it's something that you can buy another of, then you are safe to let it go (at the cost of realising you made a mistake!) There's always an alternative too.
Yep, that's my thinking. If I get offered a gig that needs an SVT, I'll just get one
6. Mesa Walkabout Scout in Canterbury you're welcome to use Andy. Chris
7.
Lovely piece of kit, Chris! If I didn't already own that lovely Ampeg rig I bought from you last year, I'd be very tempted by this... Anyway, hope all's well at Beedster Towers and GLWTS. Nik
Thanks Nik, hope all's well mate. Even I can't think of a reason why you'd need this and the Ampeg All good at Beedster Towers, the monkeys are growing up and the gear collection is thinning at about the same rate
8. I've been there a lot in the last two years (having sold three big Ampeg rigs). Sell it mate. I bought a very nice preamp (REDDI) that I run either into the PA or the desk. Tube heft/grunt/tone is lovely but it ain't the be all and end all.
9. Thanks Harry, it's a lovely piece of kit and looks absolutely fantastic on stage. It's ability to do the job with electric bass is unquestioned, but it's so much better with DB that I thought it would be, really flatters both my playing and the instrument much like my old B-15 did. Only gigs I'm likely to be doing in the near future are acoustic/miced with DB, which whilst it is a lovely approach, means there's not much point in keeping this baby. At £700 it is of course an absolute steal, as it was when I bought it from you (they're over £2000 new now, and you'd have to wait a while to get one in this colour) Cheers Chris
10. Glorious combo in a very very very cool retro tan colour scheme. It's not being used and is going to be replaced by more family oriented gear! Bought from Harry (Hazbeen) on here a while back, it's in extremely good condition and has the Mesa Boogie cover also. I'd prefer collection from Canterbury but can post, although it won't of course be cheap! A couple of Harry's original pics below, I will post more later if need be Chris
11. Rather lovely Modulus Flea and an equally lovely Fender Jazz still waiting for new owners here folks. I've put them both back in their hard cases and put both in the bespoke bass storage area of the house (i.e., under the bed and a long way from the music room) to avoid playing them because every time I pick up either I want to keep them
12. Funny how good a Precision with J-PUPs looks, especially when compared to a Jazz with a P-PUP, which just looks wrong. That's a very elegant looking bass. I've always been convinced that a significant part of the P-Bass tone is in the neck (having played Precision neck on Jazz bodies and vice-versa), so I'm looking forward to hearing your views on how that sounds compared to a 'proper' Jazz. Either way, lovely looking bass, good work.
13. Ah, just for a second when I saw the title Harry I thought it was going to be the Venture 2x12 combo, in which case I would have had a rather poorly timed attached of GAS! Either way, I'm not sure what differences in tone there might be - if any - between this and the M-Pulse (both are monstrously good), but these Ventures look absolutely stunning, the angled front adds so much mojo. Where's the 'sighs nostalgically' emoticon when you need it eh
14.
I remember it as THE low point in a 25 year bass playing journey.
And just to clarify, that low point is up against my early 80's hair-do catching fire whilst doing a Taylor on stage at City Poly in 1982, and pulling over an entire Trace rig (2 x cabs + head) at an audition
15. I gigged it once, as a dep at a dinner event, and having noticed that I wasn't 'jazzing' it enough, the singer/keys guys shouted "walk man, walk". I remember it as THE low point in a 25 year bass playing journey. It's a great song as it stands, but it seems to have a very odd effect on a certain type of musician....
16.
"People will talk about it for a long time"
At least with the PUPs where they are they'll be able to hear what each other are saying? What a clown for building that, not hard to guess why he's selling it....?
17. Greg, I'll take it if you still have it? Chris
18. There are worse addictions mate, and generally GAS if done sensibly is a zero sum game
19.
I hear you there, so I guess that's one reason why the fun has run out for me too?!
Ha ha, fair point I think you have the terminology wrong however Dan, GAS = Gear Addiction Syndrome
20.
. That doesn't appear to be the case and given the divergence of at times contradictory views, offered st times with prejudice, how do I know an expert from a person with an opinion?
The best way of identifying expertise is by consensus and reputation. There are some luthiers/technicians about whom you will simply not hear a bad work spoken, Martin Simms springs to mind, although I've no idea how far away you are from him. However, it sounds like your issue is one of not fully understanding simple human nature - that there is a variety of opinion on everything - and the associated need to seek all perspectives and then work it out for yourself, as opposed to not understanding bass setup per se, so I doubt this post will help much either
21. Crikey, this is like a Monty Python sketch?
22.
Yes - if it was near me I would have gone and had a look at it but not for £1400+. It's definitely interesting although the grain on the front is a bit rustic, and there's a bit scar on the back that needs examination. For a while I thought that I could buy a good bass fairly cheap on eBay by very carefully shopping around the older basses that come up, but it's amazing how much people seem to be prepared to pay for something as complicated as a double bass without seeing it in person. When I bought my current bass I ended up going to Ben's place in Hildenborough (www.thedoublebassroom.com) just because that's about the only place the country where you can try a dozen or more basses that are very much the real thing.
Again, the shill bidding doesn't help does it I don't think spending more than £200 on a bass you haven't seen in person is wise, no matter how promising it looks in photos. This is especially the case if the seller is clearly not a musician (and for some reason about 50% of DBs appear to be listed by the low end antiques/house-clearance/"was my dad's" type). But people still do. Go figure...?
23. ah, there's history to this thread I see
24. Setting up a bass is generally quite easy as long as there are no pre-existing issues, manufactured or acquired. A setup by a good professional often beats what an average amateur can do, whilst a good amateur can often beat what an average professional can do. In short, there is absolutely no straight answer to your question, just opinion. I would suggest that if you are struggling to get the setup you want however, that you take it to a good professional to ensure that there are no issues.
