I'd play both sets on both basses and see which I prefer, there's plenty of characteristics of each instrument over and above the board material that could affect that decision.

Might be an OK 70's Fender, but certainly not all original (e.g., neck worn/neck binding unworn etc). At the price it would have to be a magical instrument to tempt anyone seriously, and even so there's always going to be problems should you need to sell it down the line.

Yes, the Walkabout is a special amp, it's going to be really interesting to see how the newbie measures up

Tone wise they're more similar than I'd expected, but it's soooooo easy to dial in a lovely low-mid-PBass-with-flats tone on the Walkabout, the Prodigy EQ seems pretty crude by comparison, and I'm not a great fan of the 'voice' idea either. I wouldn't say the Prodigy is more aggressively voiced, it certainly seemed a little more pronounced at the top end. Having said this, the Prodigy is a pretty amazing piece of engineering, and given it doesn't weigh a whole lot more than the Walkabout, and has the same footprint pretty much, it's one hell of a 250w all-tube amp (and it has the switchable 125w option also).

Having just picked up a Prodigy, and having A/B'd it with my Walkabout, I would love to see the lovechild of those two amps, there's the magic of the Walkabout tone circuit, and those lovely Prodigy power tubes

Thanks for the responses guys, I A/B'd my two Mesa 2x10s with a few heads yesterday and, to my ears (and that's the key thing here I think), there was a loss of bass when stacked vertically. I'm guessing it was simply an increase in mids/highs plus the fact that these were hitting me at closer to ear level than I'm used to (I'm mostly using just the one cab on the floor). However, the upside was that I could really hear differences between heads that I perhaps might not have done using conventional horizontal layout. Main thing I learned yesterday? I miss my SVT. Ludicrously heavy, and a complete pain to rehearse and gig with, but nothing makes bass sound better. Might not be all that safe on top of a vertically stacked rig though

Having done a bit of playing around with my two 2x10s, I’m interested in people’s preferences, experience, and thoughts. For example, is bass response enhanced when they’re in classic 4x10 formation? Cheers Chris
