1. Anyone going to tell us how it plays and sounds?
 2.
Something keeps me looking at them, I'm intrigued. Yet I have a lovely Jazz I prefer, no money, and I'm not even into relics. So I blame this thread, entirely. And perhaps that this would be cool to own with my Modululs. However I'm managing the GAS and keeping the credit card and Jazz Bass safe, whilst saluting those that got in
With you there Dan
 3.
Only 1 left at guitar guitar now, there were 3 this morning and 4 last night. I've never seen a bass sell this quick, it has to be this thread, right?
I think a few folks suspect this batch will sell out immediately and that seeing this, Fender might either cut corners on the next batch, up the price significantly, or even discontinue it. It's Fender after all
 4. Everyone else appears to be buying the new Fender Flea Sig
 5. Funny thing about real wear is it often defies logic, my old '65 was worn in places it shouldn't have been whilst the finish was intact in places that should have been worn. I guess if a bass has been used by one player for 30 odd years (and in the days before Basschat it did happen), the idiosyncrasies of the player could be seen in the finish: how they played it, where they kept it, even how they carried it. Martin Simms makes relics with a story (studio bass, gigging bass etc) along these very lines. Re the bass in this thread, I think it's a bloody good job. far better than the Fender Roadworn series and most of the Custom Shop models (if you want to see poor relic work check out the Jaco relic, and that retails at over £4k). A few honest knocks from gigging will help with the bits that are still perhaps a little shiny
 6. Ha ha, this thread will still be going when the dinosaurs have returned
 7.
ordered online, so can easily be sent back. If it's anything like my Steve Harris West Ham bass (apart from the weight) it'll be very nice
Fair point
 8. Bloody hell, I've yet to see a review let alone see one in the flesh. I do hope they're good or there's gonna be a lot of 'em popping up in the FS forum in the very near future
 9.
Thanks for the kind words, mate. Yep, my requirements have changed some what and it would seem that somewhere to put the baby is more important than somewhere to put the bass. I know, the world's gone mad I fondly remember buying this from you and walking home with it through Canterbury town centre, stopping at The Bell en route for some much need sustenance.
World gone mad indeed. You could get a bit Chadwick on it, put a door in the back and keep the baby in there? And given the state of the punters at our last gig in The Bell, I think you should consider yourself pretty lucky to have still been in possession of an intact instrument following that pint mate
 10.
£400 over three years or £2.56 a week. Seems like 'fair use' to me. I wish my cars depreciated so little!
Yep, I buy and sell a lot of gear and see all my purchases as tryouts and/or rentals on which I expect to make a bit of a loss. I'm very happy to do so because I enjoy experiencing a variety of instruments, and like many here consider myself fortunate that I can scratch the retail itch regularly without incurring the losses that those who need to buy new shoes (MNN) endure. I have two basses - both vintage Precisions (one FL) - a double bass, a 70's strat, a mandolin and a Gibson acoustic that I've had for years and which are my mainstay instruments, but otherwise my gear is a moving feast on which I estimate I lose about 10% of the purchase value each time I sell, that loss which I'm happy to accept for the above reasons and also because once I've decided to sell something I'd rather let it go quickly so I can move on to something else. Money's a tool
 11. Ah, my old DB. A lovely lovely instrument that, ironically, I tried to get back from Jay a year or so ago at which time he was having none of it. Babies change everything don't they mate It's always hard to describe a DB as there are so many variables - changing strings and action can change a jazz instrument into a rockabilly instrument into a bluegrass instrument almost overnight - but when I had this it was a Jazzer's dream: low and extremely easy action, great sustain and a really even tone across the whole range. If I remember correctly it also has quite a small body despite being normal length for a 3/4, making it far easier to move around and to play. Either way, I have very fond memories of the old thing IIRC I paid £800 for this in about 2008, so this really is quite a bargain price, and an instrument that would be of use to anyone from a newbie to a regular gigger.
 12.
I have a 300 watt Mesa Walkabout that has been loud enough for pretty much every type of gig, from jazz, rock, doom, djent even when in 1x15 combo form. More speakers is always the best start. Speaker positioning can always help as well. Getting your band to pay attention to volume levels also helps.
I have a Mesa Walkabout combo and used to have a matching extension cab. The main problem when using the extension was that of not blowing the doors off the venue, it was unfeasibly loud. However, too much scooping and even that could disappear into the mix, so whilst the extra speaker and positioning is important, the EQ has to be appropriate also.
 13.
to be fair its what i read on here...
Yes but the people who've said it here have all too often picked it up through marketing themselves
 14.
Watts don't matter. You don't measure sound levels in watts, you measure it in decibels, and there's no direct correlation between the two. If there was a Vox AC30 wouldn't make your ears bleed from fifty feet away, nor would anyone be able to gig with an Ampeg B15. The simple fact of the matter is if you can't get the volume you want with one cab you need two cabs.
Yep, I had to sell my B-15 (25w) because it was far too loud for my needs (small studio), and far far louder than several other amps I've owned that were rated at over 10x the wattage.
What you've been told comes mainly from marketing departments, usually through advertising. So yes, lies.
Ha ha, that's about the truth of it
 15.
I can only imagine that the 4b is more expensive to make. It has 4 recesses on top into which the feet of a stacked cab fit (the C4 doesn't). The 4b is physically larger and substantially deeper, thus you would imagine it'd produce deeper lows. I've run upto 4 x 4b's with DB and never found it lacking in lows. In fact I've had more issues with taming the low end (especially at medium to high volume), and end up cutting the lows from about 80Hz to 100Hz typically. Had I not already bought the 4b's (before the C4 was ever released) I would've opted for the C4 instead.
I think the point about taming excessive bass is spot on, I always suspect that lighter cabs do this less well? What does 'deeper lows' mean in the context of the PJB specs that suggest the lighter cab goes lower
Thanks Chris, long time! That was my gut feeling i.e bigger, heavier=better. It's hard to get solid advice from dealers.Any view on a single 8x5" cab versus 2 no. 4 x 5". More flexible yes but I always need 4ohms for both my EA and AI heads.
Hey Julian, for me flexibility is king, especially given the weight and size of these (PS we're now back in Canterbury - in fact I'm doing beers with Ali Atkin as we speak - let's catch up sometime?)
 16. Frequency range and quality of tone are not one and the same mate. The lighter cheaper cab may theoretically go lower, but you need to ask how well it dies so and how relevant that extra range is in a gig situation. I'd go for the heavier cab myself, IME lightweight is always a compromise at one or more levels sound wise
 17. Oil it to taste - light enough to not even be felt is OK as long as it's there - but don't leave it totally bare
 18.
B E A U T Y
Thanks Pete. Folks, just back to the UK. The bass is still nicely packed in a very big cardboard box with lots of padding and ready to send. Given I'm able to stay home for a courier collection tomorrow, it could be with you by Tuesday.......
 19. I think that's my old bass, if so it's a glorious example. If not, there are at least two '79s with rosewood board! Either way, this is a rare beast and a lovely bass
 20.
You say the gods are telling you to keep it and there's a bunch of us telling ourselves the gods are intimating to us directly we should buy it 😉 Ahh the mind!
They're not doing any of us any favours are they Just to confirm folks, this is sale only, I keep receiving trade offers but it ain't going to happen - if I needed another bass I'd be keeping this one
 21. I will now put a few folks back in their misery The bass sold, was paid for and was about to be couriered when two and two were put together and it transpired that it had sold to an ex-member of BC who had been banned and had come back under an assumed name. For a number of reasons related to this I pulled the sale and refunded the buyer (Ped and iCastle are in possession of all of the details around this). So, one way or another, I suspect the gods are telling me to keep this lovely instrument. I'll leave it here for a little while as I know there was a lot of interest and because I still have a few more pre-CBS/70's/CS Precisions than any man should. However, having covered the cost of the DB, I'm quite happy to keep this if no-one jumps at it. I'll leave it at £1750 as frankly it seems a little petty to put the price back up again, even if it's less than I paid and less than the bass is worth. Chris
 22.
Is there? I've not seen any? I've seen a lovely pre-CBS Precision on here but no Jazz Basses.
My bad, on the phone and didn;t read the thread properly, no just Pre CBS Precisions here
