1.
Well that didn't last long, I'd just smashed open the daughters piggy bank and got to £3.22p in 2ps and 1ps, there were still lots of 5ps I that never got countered....
Ha ha, I ventured into my eldest's piggy bank a while back to find to my horror that she has amassed far more cash than I can remember in one place for a while! Seems she was pretty much working on the basis that any shiny flat round object was fair game, especially the gold ones! Whilst it would't have been a pre-CBS Precision, I could probably have bought a bass!
2.
Ohmygosh that CS is just awesome!!!
It is, but despite its qualities as an instrument and it's rather appealing faux relic, you pick it up and you know it was recently put together by the Custom Shop to look like a certain famous player's instrument! Pick up the '57 on the other hand and you know that it's been played for 59 years. In short it's been around for pretty much the whole history of rock and roll as far as I'm concerned. There's mojo and magic in the '57
3. Sufficient interest in this from trusted BCers for me to place it on hold for the time being. If things fall through I'll open it up again Chris
4.
Having shared some emails with Chris recently I am really am gutted for him that this is up for sale, but totally understand the dilemma he's been facing. I'm even more gutted that I don't have the funds to buy it back, I never wanted to sell it in the first place but the cash was needed elsewhere. I also used to own the CS55 that Chris has pictured and is keeping, that is an incredible bass with no faults at all, but I actually bonded more with the original 57 P Bass, it is special and full of vintage history mojo. Bargain for the right BC'er hope it sells soon so I can stop pondering how to get it back
Thanks Dan, you've had you ear bent a little on this! Much appreciated mate.
5. In a different life I met many famous musos, most were prats to be honest (this was the '80s), and some were among the most arrogant and self centred people I've had the displeasure to meet. In the context of the O/P, most seemed only too keen to limit the chances me or anyone else not realising who they were by making it very clear that they were indeed who they were! The most curious exception was the singer from the world's most famous rock'n'roll band who was sufficiently unassuming and low key for me to assume that he was simply a bloke who looked like Mick Jagger.
6.
this is perfect! a dream bass! wish i had the cash! want my Fbass for it?
Hey mate, many thanks, but too many electric basses at present I'm afraid, sorry. Dream bass? Yes' I think it's just that for pro/semi-pro players who travel a lot, or for players like me who find - or in my case found - themselves playing anything from dodgy pubs to festivals, and who just prefer to get their only DB the gig and home without too much space being required in the van, and in and out of the gig itself with little risk of damage. I never have to worry about mechanical issues either, let's face it, I can stick my hand right in there and sort any soundpost problems So why am I selling? I've sacked both bands I was in, and these days I just need a double bass to sit in the studio. In short, the only things that really matter are tone and playability. The occasional gigs pop up for sure, but I'll just have to be a real man and take a DB in one piece to those! In short the Chadwick is in part overkill and perhaps a little too clinical an instrument for my needs now. Probably fair to say that I prefer my basses a little older and dirtier; I imagine most would think the opposite! I'll happily keep this if no-one wants it or if I can afford to buy an old ply instrument without selling - I'd just stick the Velvets back on for the occasional jazzier moments. Happy days
7. I hope the original author doesn't mind me using his words, but they so eloquently described both myself and the dilemma in which I currently find myself that I couldn't resist.....
My erratic, voracious and frequently emotional purchasing behaviour has placed me in a position where - to the detriment of other pursuits and demands - I have enjoyed the privilege of access to an extraordinary feast of the world's most beautiful basses.....
Ha ha, it was like he was me Now, here's the dilemma in question On the left a recently acquired '57. Bought from Dan (chiliwailer) on BC, and in many respects a dream instrument for me since first seeing a certain blond Geordie sporting a similar beast in the '80's. On the right, a Fender Custom Shop version of a '55, also recently acquired, this time from Andy Travis, also on BC So where's the dilemma I hear you ask? To be honest, I had hoped the Custom Shop version was going to do the job live (which I don't do that often these days), whilst the original was going to be the mainstay, alongside DB, in my studio. Problem is that I simply haven't bonded with the original, at least not to the degree that justifies keeping an instrument valued at £8,000 around, and especially given what else I could do with that money at present. In short, the Custom Shop will do very nicely for both live and studio, and selling the '57 will allow me to buy some more gear! It was an emotional buy at a very very good price. Dan's original thread is here http://basschat.co.u...ginal-vintage/. I'm going to offer it for sale for what I paid Dan, a rather incredible £5,500. If it doesn't move it will go on a consignment sale at a far higher price with one of the usual suspects. In a way I'm a little angry with myself to be selling it, if for no other reason that prices for vintage Fenders are extremely low at present and in a few years this bass would likely have earned as much sitting in its case under the bed as I will have earned gigging. But c'est la vie. I'll of course listen to trade/PX offers, I could be persuaded to trade this for a vintage post-'57/split-coil pre-CBSPrecision, a vintage ply DB (with cash my way), or a boat More pics below. I will post more pics and add details as we go, I have been meaning to do this for a while and finally made the decision today, so didn't want to find myself procrastinating again. I have receipts for original sale from New Kings Road Vintage for £8,000 and some other bits and pieces that speak for its provenance. 8. I should add that I would have taken some pics of the bass all folded and in the case but I really don't want the hassle of retuning the guts at present. I'll happily break it down and rebuild it face-to-face for any prospective buyer, and if I get bored one evening will do a youtube vid
9. Some photos as promised
10. All PM's replied to. I have to admit I wasn't expecting so many people to be interested, so apologise for not having posted pics yet. Will do some this evening. In answer to a few questions, yes the flightcase is included, I can string it with anything from a cheap set of steels up to Velvet Animas, although the final price will reflect the strings installed (it's currently wearing a full set of guts and sounds incredible), there are no issues, and no repairs have been made. It is a beautifully designed, engineered and maintained instrument and a joy to play. It's important to note that despite the fact that the bass folds and packs into a flight case about 1/3 the size of that required for a normal DB (and which is accepted as normal luggage on most airlines), there are no significant tone or mechanical compromises associated with the engineering, that is that unlike every other 'travel friendly' EUB or hybrid I've played, this is 100% double bass. I think it's fair to say that it requires a little more maintenance simply because there are more moving parts, but we're not talking lots. Finally, and no joke, it takes around 5 minutes to break down if done carefully and a little less to re-build. Unless of course it's strung with guts in which case it takes about 40 minutes to get it up to pitch! I really would prefer trade to cash, ideally for a vintage/well played-in ply instrument of equal or greater value. If the latter I can put money in. I'm not all that keen on recently built carved basses to be honest but try me. especially if it's 4/4 or 7/8. Whilst I can of course post this (that's what the flight case is for after all), I'd prefer collection as I increasingly find every courier-based transaction a source of stress that I don't need Cheers Chris
11.
This is lovely Chris! Is it the one you got to replace the one you sold me?
Hi Jack, yes it is, fancy another trip to Canterbury
12. I've played this bass when it had the old/original body, and for £700 it's a SERIOUS bargain. I'd take it with the original body quite happily.
13. Bought on BC from Rabbie a while back (original listing here http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2901922) it's a beautiful and well designed instrument that is absolutely perfect for the travelling bass player who cares about how her or his bass sounds, plays, feels and looks. It's in very good condition and sounds glorious. Lots of info here http://foldingbass.com and here https://www.talkbass...g-bass.534179/. I'm not likely too be travelling with DB anymore so think I may revert to an old-school/low-tech instrument that doesn't fold so will happily discuss trades, especially for a 4/4. Unusually for a DB, this can of course be couriered Chris
14. The man! Not only did he sell me a rather lovely piece of kit, but he delivered it in person. From Holland! Could have talked for hours about [s]kids, sleepless nights, bed wetting[/s] our rock'n'roll lifestyles. Top guy in every respect and highly recommended. Chris
15.
I haven't bought anything from Clarky recently, but his contribution to this forum is very much missed and I wish he'd come back!
+1
16. I hear '80 was a good year at Marlin, equivalent to '62 at Fullerton?
17. Steve arrived at my place yesterday and rather unkindly left with my Wal. OK, he did pay me for it, but even so..... All joking aside, Steve's a top bloke to deal with. We had a decent chat about mutual friends, GAS, the music business generally, and most importantly of all, of Steve Coogan's great bit of air fretless bass playing in the trailer episode of I'm Alan Partridge (we agreed the air bass in question was most likely a Wal). All this while my daughters did their absolute best to interrupt, ask daft questions and break the (rather delicate) Wal case. Top guy, top bassist, deal with confidence. Chris
18.
Turns out the worries about financial constraints were quite well founded!... If it weren't the case though, I'd have this back in a heartbeat! Incredible bass, beautiful sound and feel, really one of the best basses I've played. I want it back, but I can't afford it Are you sure you want to let this go again Chris!?...
And they won't get any better for a while mate, my three girls are like an economic black hole, sucking in huge quantities of economic energy and turning it instantaneously into something so incredibly small that it is almost impossible to discern its very existence. Stretching the analogy a little, that black hole then appears to pull in all other financial resources! The only way I've kept some decent gear is by maintaining a 'one in/one out gear fund and doing everything through PayPal so that no-one is tempted to say "we could spend that on a holiday" But you know what, the fact that I can let a Wal go in part to fund the girls' holiday this year says it all, there's nothing better. Hope all goes smoothly with yours mate. And this lovely Wal is sold pending the usual folks
19. Folks, a quick head's up, if you're interested in this please read the background to the bass in the thread here http://basschat.co.u...l/page__st__90., specifically posts 83-85 which detail the work carried out by Paul Hermann at Wal, and also show before shots (horrifying) and after shots (lovely)! Cheers Chris
20. Thanks Martin. Folks, the guy who bought this bass in January received two bits of good news the same week, the first was his first Wal, the second his first child! So, aware of imminent financial constraints, he offered it back and I, missing it, bought it back Ultimately however, whilst I'd love to keep it, it's been here pretty much unplayed for three months - I have three other fretless basses, an EUB and a DB, so I'm not without options. I'd prefer collection from Canterbury or meet-up in the SE area, but I'm sure we can sort things if that's a problem. No trades thanks Chris
21. Hell yes, been doing that for years, I've a few on the go at present here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/278884-so-many-projects-so-little-time/page__fromsearch__1, most parts of which (with some obvious exceptions) were bought on here, in fact one of those exceptions was in fact bought on here but back in the old days
22. Is that definitely an Allparts neck, I've three on various basses and all have exactly the same stamp "Allparts Licensed by Fender" across the heel? I thoughts they were USA also (might be wrong there though)? Either way, good luck with the sale, but might be best to confirm now rather than getting an irate PM after the sale
23.
I'm a big fan of RHCP & what he does with them but that was absolutely terrible. Bad tone & bad playing - someone just needs to tell him; you are not Jimi Hendrix, get out there & show them a funky bass version not some rubbish guitar-wannabe trick.
Must admit I was expecting a slapathon
