1. We all do things for different reasons. If you're calculating an hourly rate for your services, then this sort of thing doesn't make sense. Me, I don't calculate an hourly rate, and given how much I enjoy playing music with good friends, sometimes playing for free makes a lot more sense than not playing for free.
  2.
Personally , I would change the set which requires no fiddle if you can`t replace him. If you go to Italy , and he messes that up, that could be your one big chance gone. Would rather have a mediocre player who performs adequetly than a liability
+1. In fact, having just listened to some of the songs on the website - which are rather good by the way - I couldn't help thinking that the fiddle parts would sound better played on a whistle a-les Pogues?
  3.
Booze does make it easier for one to be a total dick though, I can tell you that from experience.
Ha ha, yes, our old singer, an intelligent, articulate and sensitive singer songwriter, was a true gent, never drank on stage, and always treated the audience and the band with real respect. Then one night had two pints before quite a big gig that was going out live on radio, started using the F word, and then made some rather inopportune comments, especially given the demographic of the audience in question. And all on live radio! I just have to mention the name of the festival and he goes bright red and starts to sweat
  4. ...and for those of you who don't play the type of music in question, the egos of even average fiddle players can make those of rock singers, prog keyboardists and blues guitarists pale into complete insignificance IMO of course.....
  5.
We've had different issues with this guy in the past, he's tried to convince the rest of the band to sack various members, me included, after I'd just had my first child (I wasn't committing to the band). This year he's been wreaking havoc by messing about with our website and social media by not giving anyone else any control over what is published, (the images he uses are dreadful), firing various angry emails across to us all for whatever reason, cancelling rehearsals left right and centre, including not turning up on a couple of occasions and not letting us know. In addition, he's always the first to sling sh** around if something hasn't gone his way, acting as if we are not professional enough.
To me it's the above, not the drinking, that's the bigger problem. He has evident ego/control/narcissism issues, of which thinking he can both criticise others for lack of professionalism whilst lacking that very professionalism himself is only one of no doubt many symptoms. This weekend's drinking is to be honest a good opportunity to get rid of an ongoing problem that was probably going to get worse.
  6. Nik, this instrument is so strongly associated with you that I heard rumours Fender were planning to rebrand it the Nik Demetriades Signature Bass? Your selling this is surely the end of an era?
  7. It's worth mentioning that this is one of a run of 250 units. I hate to use terms such as 'Limited Edition' or 'Rare' because pretty much every bass or amp for sale on eBay seems to be described as such, but this is genuinely both. OK, there's some online stores advertising these for sale, some at knocked down prices as low as £2,699, but the reality, as I found when I bought this one, is that none of the stores in question appear to have them in stock, and whilst they all say they can "probably get one", I'm not convinced, I doubt there's all that many left unsold of the original 250. In fact it took me about a week to track this one down, and I quite literally had to phone store after store to do so. Yesterday afternoon I played a '57 Precision, an '83 Wal, a '78 Ric and a late 70's P/J through it, and all of them sounded absolutely glorious
  8.
Got any photos of the feet..?
Can be arranged
  9.
Ooohh...does the colour change with bias selection?
Yes, looks lovely on a dark stage
  10. Bit repetitive, but good playing. Is that an epoxy coated neck, carbon/graphite or something else?
  11.
Chris, I hope you've got the pick guard screwed to something. They can shrink further very quickly when off the bass. Looks great
Exactly what I was thinking, get yourself a cheap precision body to keep that on Chris, and sooner rather than later. Now, you'll be needing a period correct amp to go with it
  12. I realised that I wasn't really trying all that hard to sell this so some more pics below Lovely Ampeg tubes The protective plastic cover is still on the plates hence the odd look, but it's number 88 of a run of only 250 worldwide. 13.
and I don't really get why you'd want a P, Jazz and MM in one bass.
Really....,?
  14.
Oh dear!
+1
  15.
I bought the chrome topped version of this (non-pcb) just over a year ago and it immediately cured all my GAS. I literally haven't spent a penny on gear since Deecember 2014. So buying this will save you a fortune.
Fair point, and I agree, it is the ultimate GAS antidote for the bass player. Hindsight is of course a very accurate science, but I wish I'd known when I bought it that one year later I'd have my own studio (in which, for various reasons, everything is DI'd, albeit through some nice preamps I should point out), and that I'd have taken the decision to quit playing live, both decisions meaning I don't need what is probably the best bass amp ever built. So, cash, trades/PX all considered.
  16.
I"ve had this checked out now by the wonderful chaps at Wal and the issue quite simply is that the nut has shifted, and will need to be replaced. It's going in for a full set up... Now all I need to is to sell a 72 jazz bass to pay for it all!
Nice one and well done Lawrie. Misaligned nut, the simple solution to a complex problem
  17.
Can somebody please buy this.....
Ha ha, there's a few things in your signature I'd trade it for Rick In reply to a couple of enquiries, I do have the original packaging for this so I'm very happy to send fully insured via courier, although it won't be cheap! I'm still very keen to do a deal with a high quality electronic drum kit, or failing that, for interesting basses, the more vintage the better. Anything played by Macca tends to work for me, except Hofners
  18.
The Who live at shea stadium ? Have they moved from Leeds ?
Yes, very far indeed
  19.
Very nice indeed! Shame it's not for sale.
Steve, I'm confident that if you pointed out the huge number of lovely passive Fenders on here going at very reasonable prices, and that the chances of any of those sellers wanting a Yammie 6'er is low, Nick might be persuaded
  20. I've done a deal or two on Basschat (!) and I'd put mine with Steve in the top 1%. Lovely guy, patient and understanding, and a gent when confronted with the Beedster kids! He also has very good taste in gear! Hughly recommended seller/buyer. C
  21. I was bored, no matter what sound quality or technical wizadry might be on tap, bored musicians always disappoint.
  22.
" We had the guitar inspected and we can confirm, in our opinion, it is all original!" This line is amusing. Saying it's been inspected and then stating it's all original "in our opinion".
He's not the first and he won't be the last. When I was looking for a pre-CBS Precision as few years back, I was amazed/shocked at how many 'respected' dealers in Denmark St and the like would use phrases such as 'in our opinion', and when pushed would always pull back from using terms such as 'certain'. What he's indicating above is probably as much legalese as anything else, but it's just further evidence of the problems of buying and selling old basses.
  23.
I bet Macca's ownership of a Wal had much less impact on their sales than the fleet of 80's pop bass gods playing them.
Yep, at the time of Wal's ascendency Macca was not really considered an iconic bassist in the way players like Mick Karn were. Funny thing is that those 80's Wal playing popsters probably set the vibe for Wal in the same way as Geddy Lee and Chris Squire did for Ricks, and both brands still suffer from being too strongly associated with a specific sound. Macca of course played both Wals and Ricks and sounded nothing like 80's popsters or 70 prog rockers. He probably did both brands a lot of good.
