It sounded good in the shop. Amps that don't cut it at gigs
Beedster replied to argibbo's topic in Amps and Cabs
I don't think this is anything to do with valve sound either. The amps are just eq'd differently. this is really just another variation on the 'it sounds great at home' theme we've had on here several times. Deep bass is difficult to control, depends upon room acoustics and a bass sound that is great with the rest of the band sounds horrible when soloed.
Yep, end of story, there's a reason 'that' Ampeg tone has been such a mainstay, it works in the situation that most bass players need it to work, in the band setting on stage or in the studio. As Phil said, the old 'why do my band hate my lovely bassy tubey tone?' thing has been done to death, it's because like all instruments, what works solo and in ensemble situations are completely different. See if you can get hold of isolated bass tracks from some of the recordings on which you like the bass tone, you might be surprised just how crap it sounds without the band around it. It's the same with orchestral music also, when I used to do such a thing it always amazed me how, when the conductor called for a section to play a section in isolation, just how different it sounded without the rest of the orchestra, even with 'lead' instruments such as flutes and violins, but especially with double bass and tubas Bands are collaborative units, if your drummer is throwing things at you, you may need to have a serious think about the tone you're after. -

*ON HOLD* 1981 Yamaha BB2000 Fretless - £500
That would be a shame, the fretless version is comparatively rare.
Take your point mate, but it's really down to what makes it work for the owner I guess. I'd keep it fretless for sure. Perhaps rather than suggest he fret it I should have suggested he spends a bit of time learning to play it - there's nothing you can do on a fretted that you can't do on a fretless after all -
Oh,how I would love this! I own the fretted version, same colour, slightly younger though, a 1984. Best bass I've had, a keeper for life! Alas, the funds are non-existent for this beauty. GLWTS though ;-)

Thanks for the kind words! I would definitely be keeping a hold of this if it were fretted, unfortunately I can't justify keeping such a wonderful instrument when my intonation is so... questionable.
Actually, you could always keep it and have it fretted? Extra £100 and you may have a lifetime keeper as per Bobby's post? -

Beedster replied to RhythmKage's topic in Basses For Sale
It probably says a lot to say this at a time when I'm also selling a fretless bass (at twice the price), but this bass is probably one of the best fretless basses to come up for sale on here for quite a while, in fact I really can't quite understand why it's still here. I currently have five fretless basses (I know), and need to offload at least two of them, but I am SO tempted by this -

Just took a few minutes off to browse the bay and thought I'd noticed something of a trend. 30 seconds of rigorous scrutiny and data analysis indicated that over 500 of a total of just under 1000 items listed by Gear4Music are damaged. What the hell do they get up to there? Do they recruit very clumsy people, is the warehouse on a geothermal fault-line, or is there something more sinister going on?
If you can't lift it it doesn't matter how good it sounds. Don't torment yourself.
There is wisdom there, it takes a second to injure your back and a lifetime to live with that injury. Whilst I'm a huge Ampeg fan (I've a B-15 and V4-B, neither at SVT power or weight), aTech 21 VT Bass though a lightweight rig will get you close enough for most audiences.

Either way it is one of those lines that gets better each time I listen to it, and each time I try to play it I realise just how subtle and nuanced it is
So, are you selling the bodies separately again now? Or still only fully loaded? Sorry I'm confused!
No need to be confused As its says above, I'd prefer to sell them as loaded bodies. I'll happily split however for the prices indicated. Cheers Chris

I've had this listed in a thread with loads of other gear for a while and it seemed best given that a few folks I was at the weekend hadn't seen it, to give it slightly more prominence! This is for sale for one reason and one reasons only, it's just been replaced by an '83 Wal Mk1 FL (see http://basschat.co.u...ss-mk1-on-ebay/). I'd love to keep them both but you know how things are......... Body: Original 1978 Fender with J-PUP rout Neck: Original 1978 with gorgeous ebony board, again by Shuker. Back of the neck looks a bit scrappy but it's been very well done and it feels beautifully played in. Tuners: Original 70’s Fender PUPs: Nordstrand NPJ4 P/J set bought from Bass Direct for £175 here http://www.bassdirec...on_pickups.html. Circuit/preamp: No idea, doubt it's original Bridge: Early 80’s Fender high mass (I can offer this with a Badass or a Fender Vintage RI also) This bass is sublime and takes what is an extremely low action for a wooden neck, in short the board has been beautifully done. The PUPs, which replaced some active EMGs that had been installed, are extremely well balanced for a P/J set and compliment this lovely old bass perfectly. Note: The photo at the top is the original from Bass Direct when it was sporting the EMGs, pics below which are less good quality are sporting the new PUPs
I'm not wearing a wignal for anybody. If I go bald, then I go bald and that's that.
You say that now.... -
... But surely, tone alone is not the sole criteria, at least for most folks..? Budget, portability, ability to sound good in various venues, connectivity... It should sound as good as the player wants, I'd agree, but that's not the end of it. A great sounding amp/cab that requires a low loader and a crane are not going to sell very well, I'd say. Similarly if it needs a mortgage agreement for financing. Compromise is the name of the game for many.
I'm neither disagreeing with the above or passing judgement n any way, just pointing out that in the grand scheme of things, when buying gear, questions about tone are not always top of the list. -
I've just gone wireless, how does that stack up? Amps and cabs do effect your tone, but if you're going through a PA it can't make that much difference can it? as for the bass not making much difference, the old computer analogy springs to mind "rubbish in, rubbish out"
I'd have thought that the range of variables that can affect a wignal (or wireless signal, that was originally a typo but I like it so will stick with it) is far greater than that that can affect a cable? And PA is of course amps, cabs and cables, so the same quality criteria apply. I totally agree with the OP re amps and speakers however, people often choose these on the basis of criteria other than tone, e.g., total power or size etc. -
