1. Mmmmm, yes, that would work. I'm busy today but I'd agree to that in principle if that makes it easier for everyone to get the bass they want out of this. Could we sort by PM to make sure we're all on the same page? Apologies if I'm slow to reply but will certainly do so by Sunday Chris
 2. Bloody hell, I've only just seen this Folks, you are going to have to trust me on this, as a previous owner of this bass who sold it for the most pathetic of reasons, that is I didn't like the way it looked (and I'm talking the body not the neck by the way, in fact I started hankering for the same bass with a natural finish and an SCP PUP, which is what I eventually ended up with) - this is an OUTSTANDING instrument. And, as anyone who is anyone in the bass world knows, reverse headstocks are SO this year..... So, for all you [s]ladyboys[/s] [s]weaklings[/s] [s]pansies[/s] unfortunate folk who need a lightweight bass, but a lightweight bass that rocks, THIS IS THE BASS. It is ludicrously light, in fact, all joking aside, that was another aspect of this bass I didn't really get on with, I'm one of the very small minority who actually like heavier (10lb-ish) basses. It punches well above that lightweight tone wise and is a dream to play - light, resonant and fast. For the money you won't get a better bass of this type, period. And BTW, Karl is a true gent and a pleasure to deal with, so you will not have any problems whatsoever with the deal. Chris
 3.
You have to play with your ears and not your eyes.
Eyes can be helpful, something I learned from my early days playing DB live - especially when with poor monitoring - was to use a chromatic tuner and check whenever necessary the agreement between what I think my ears are hearing (in tune/not in tune) and a reliable measure of pitch.
 4.
Try as many things as you can and dispose of what doesn't work for you, that way you'll sound like you and not a clone of, whoever. Today I was using a pick with my fretless and was loving the sound. I may do it some more on other songs. There are no rules as such, just music. The modern bass guitar is only around 65 years old, so who is to say what's right and what's wrong?
Agreed, to my ear medium-heavy flats, played with a pick on a fretless Ric or Precision is a to-die-for tone. Probably true for a Jazz also I just haven't tried it yet.
 5.
I think that when anyone writes "do it your way without bothering if you're doing it correctly", does he remember that all these artists have studied (not learned, it's not the same) music, even when they say exactly the opposite ?
OK, you tell me what is 'correctly' and if I agree I'll agree with whatever else you say.....? The point is, there's no such thing as 'correctly'. The OP cites Jaco. Jaco wasn't doing it 'correctly' when he hit the scene in the late 60's, not by the then EB standards anyway. No-one above has said don't study or learn, but a few people have suggested that there are no 'fretless bass rules' as such, so study what you choose to study and learn what you choose to learn is good advice, whilst 'don't use slides' etc is just rhetoric.
 6.
By the way, I was kidding when I wrote that Beedster was right : Have you ever tried writing and reading without knowing the basic principles ?
The basic principles in question are those of music; tone, melody, harmony and rhythm. You're perhaps confusing rules of communicating a language - in your example reading and writing - with the aptitude for language itself. Language is analogous to sonic expression, and language is a phenomenon for which humans posses well developed/evolved processes that are independent of their ability to read or write them.
don;t listen to people who tell you what to do. From Percy Jones himself: ' If you feel that a fretless bass is the best instrument for you to express yourself on then get stuck in and work hard with it. Strive to get your own “voice” out via the instrument and learn to differentiate between positive and negative criticism" There are a lot of fretless players around and a lot of them sound the same, a kind of dull sound, lots of vibrato... blah blah.... Theres a hell of a lot you can do with a fretless, as i'm finding out, but I would would say try and avoid that cliche sound, explore what it can do Percy Jones and Mick Karn used slides all the time, harmonics, etc .... no rules
Exactly
 7. The best advice I can give is to ignore what others say and follow your nose. Some people play a fretless in just the same way as they play a fretted, others consistently do things on a fretless that are impossible on a fretted, most stick somewhere in the middle. Not using slides too much? Well I'm not sure, if it's right for the music, do it, if it's not, don't. Been listening to Graceland today and the fretless on those tracks contain just about every cliche in the fretless book (plus some innovation for sure), but they're perfect for the songs and in many respects definitive lines. Personally, I really really really don't like chorus on fretless, but my not liking it and my suggesting you don't do it are - and should be - two different things. I guess the trick is to do what sounds and feels good to you. My fretless playing is pretty agricultural - often out of tune to be honest, and often a little too obvious (I used to play cello and often still think like a cellist) - but I like it, the musos I play with like it, and judging from the response I get at gigs, audiences are OK with it. I don't try to sound or play like anyone else or follow any rules other than my own, and I doubt I sound like anyone else.
 8. Hi folks, lots of PMs that I don't have time to reply to but will ASAP. Firstly price is fixed and I'm not looking for trades, second postage is not included, third I may be able to deliver or meet by prior arrangement but have a hectic schedule over the coming weeks so courier is almost certainly the best bet unless you can collect from Canterbury. Will reply to PMs ASAP Chris
 9.
How lucky it's not still sunburst or I would have been forced to sell children in order to buy it
Like I said mate, no trades, even kids, although it's in part due to the proliferation of kids chez Beedster that I am forced to sell this beauty anyway!
Lovely P-Bass Chris! What's the neck like on this one? GLWTS!
Neck is lovely Byron, just how a proper Precision neck should be. Fat but not too fat, wide but not too wide, deep but not too deep, a lovely dark rosewood board and a rather nicely aged headstock
 10. Looking for a quick sale to pay for something that I shouldn't be buying! Bought a few months back from Andy Baxter who had it up for what was a bargain £999. Lovely player, light at just over 8lbs, and tonally more like a mid-60's than a mid-70's (a bit more woody and resonant to my ear than the 70's models I've owned). I've another mongrel 70's Precision so, given I have been offered a stunner of a fretless, this really needs to go sharpish. Andy's original listing here http://andybaxterbas...ils.php?id=856. I'll post some more pics when I get home. No trades or offers please, this is the cheapest 70's Precision you will find, and whilst it's clearly did it's A-Levels at the School of Hard Knocks and a degree at the University of Life, if Precisions are your thing, you will not be disappointed. C
 11.
i got it in usa like 2 years ago , nice instrument refreted 2 months ago really easy to play . cheers
Ah, OK,. The reason I asked is that I saw a very similar bass at that shop, and the neck had at some stage been snapped and repaired. It was a very good repair, but still a serious issue for any buyer. Looking at the pics you posted I noticed that there weren't any of the back of the neck, which is why I was a little suspicious that it could be the same instrument?
 12.
Voice of decent here. My old PJB M500 out-Ampeged Ampegs. Utter valve tone, not valve 'like' from MOSFETS. Not light though
Really? I used to gig both an M500 and a V4B at around the same time in my 'career' (I use the term loosely), and I certainly wouldn't say the former did or could Ampeg the latter. In fact to my mind it's chalk and cheese, both are high quality, but neither can do what the other excels at.
 13. Feel you pain mate. Also worth noting that even if the PUP does sound like your bass only louder, and even if the soundguy gets it EQ'd right without feedback, and even if the PA is up to it, the majority of audiences won't hear any difference between piezo and mag. With DB, there's far more to what an audience hears than the quality of the tone anyway, a lot of it is what is played and how it is played as opposed to how it actually sounds.
 14.
Yep you can get near, and the nearest I`ve been was with the Tech 21 VT DI, quite near with my Aguilar Tonehammer, but it`s still not the same. The sound is there, but the feel, and that "sag" you get with a valve amp just isn`t there. But for me, with a bad back, I`ll take near any day.
We all have our own words for it, you've used "sag", others use "heft", I use "grunt", but the essence of all the words is the same, it's something that all tube amps give that others don't. And key to it is feel and not sound, and probably more for the player than the audience, but it still makes a difference and to me simply makes playing so much more pleasurable. Re hybrids, having owned a SVT300 power amp a while back, I much prefer an SS preamp through a tube power amp than vice versa, although obviously this negates the weight and cost advantage that I'd guess is the essence of the tube preamp/SS power amp combination. End of the day though, tube pre + tube power = tone
 15.
My situation now is GK + VT pedal or all out move to Ampeg? And if so, which amp?
Any amp as long as it is all tube, don't believe what some people say about SS gear getting 'close enough'. Close enough if you're half deaf and don;t care about your sound yes, but not close enough for me. I have a B-15 and a V4-B. Neither are rated above 100w, both can humble most guitarists and most drummers, and both sound superb. The VT Bass might sound a bit like some of the Ampegs, but it doesn't feel like any of them.
there can be only one.....
Exactly. I think
 16.
I've played the KK Bass through the Matamp and 8x10 a few times, it works but my favourite EUB sound is still through a B-15, especially now the Matamp has sold and it's the only amp I own.
Everything sound s god though a B-15 mate, even my playing!
 17.
So tempting
Sounds rather good through large tube amps mate On a related issue, had the huge pleasure of seeing Old Crow Medicine Show at The Roundhouse, and as far as I could tell, he was playing his DB through an SVT and a fridge. MASSIVE sound, but about as far from DB as you can get! Hope all's well Steve C
 18. It's relatively small and compact and can easily be kept, for example, behind a sofa (where mine used to live). Really good instrument C
 19. The big daddy of EUBs! It guts me to sell what is not only a wonderful instrument but a wonderful piece of engineering and to my eye a work of art, albeit rather skeletal art! Anyway, the reason for sale is straight forward, I don't play it anymore. As some of you know, I live in Canterbury and work in Aberystwyth (I know). I bought this to keep at the office to enable me to do at least 20 mins of scales per day when I'm up in Wales. The reality is that when I'm there I'm in work mode and have rarely managed to find the necessary time, patience or location to practice properly. I recently decided that as it wasn't being used there I'd bring it back to Canterbury, only to find it's not being used here, simply because I've an Olde English Blonde sitting around here for those moments when I need to dabble. Those of you who've played one will know just what a magnificent beast it is. It doesn't pretend to replicate the tone of an acoustic instrument (although with the Full Circle on board it gets close enough for me), it was designed to allow pro orchestral and jazzers to practice silently via the headphone output. It was therefore built to feel and respond like a DB to both pizz and arco. Having said that, I've gigged it successfully on a few occasions and have had compliments on the tone (as much the result of it being a doddle to amplify and EQ as to any inherent total qualities of the instrument). It's in good but not perfect condition. It all works. It has the optional knee support (I think it's for the knee, I don't use it). The action is LOW LOW LOW, you can get it up as much as you want, but I've played fretless basses with higher action than this instrument. If you're an electric bass player looking to get into DB, this would be a very good starting point, not least because the low action will remove what is one of the main barriers to starting on DB, the tension between wanting to crack on with it on the one hand and muscle fatigue and potential injury on the other. Perhaps goes without saying that this can't be posted. I will however do all I can to accommodate/facilitate collection or meetup. These sell for over £3k. One grande for such a high quality instrument? Well, to quote LS&TSB, "It's a deal, it's a steal, the sale of the f*****g century" And yes, I may well keep it No trades thanks, got everything I need
 20.
For all they know, you could be fatter than the bass player they fired.
Brilliant
 21.
Well I'm in Nottingham so I for one would like a heads up so I can avoid him/her
Doubt he'll be selling any basses for a while Bump for the Telebass
 22. Thanks Dan, really not a problem, I've checked it all out and it's all as described above, that is all parts are authentic and original (the tuners and neckplate excepted), it's just they didn't all originate on the same instrument, which - Fender's late 70's QC being what it was - probably means it's a better instrument all round than had it left the factory as one! I'm not going to chase the seller despite the fact he's clearly dishonest so have left feedback to that effect and will get on with playing some bass rather than buying, selling, modifying etc! I want to keep this bass because it has a great core tone, but I don't need this bass, so I'm happy if it goes but won't be unhappy if it stays. £600 seems a very fair price all things considered so I hope someone who both wants and needs it comes along and makes my mind up for me! Cheers Chris
 23.
I wonder how much, (and is it worth doing) changing the colour to seafoam or yellow?
Ha ha, defo not my colour scheme mate! Folks, I've had a few PMs on this, thanks for that. I perhaps indicated above that I'm after the eBay seller, I'm not, I really don't care to be honest, it's a lovely instrument and once I've verified that all parts are in fact original 70's USA Fender, I doubt it changes much (let's face it, most late 70's Fenders were bitsas when they left the factory). I've emailed the seller suggesting that he was, shall we say, economic with the truth, but I doubt much will happen. All of the above taken in to account, I'm probably happy to sell it and equally happy to keep it, although if the latter the finish is coming off and that PUPs going where it should be! Chris
