Great looking bass Chris; GLWTS! Quick question - is the string spacing really 17mm at the bridge? I though that Yamaha 5s were generally 19mm at the bridge - certainly the two I've had over the last 10 years have been.. Nik
Hi Nik Good to hear from you mate, hope all's well? Decided to get the electronic doobry out for this and results are below (not entirely sure where spacing should be measured so have given three options) Centre B to centre E string at tailpiece 18.10mm Outside of G string to outside of D string at saddle 18.63mm Centre to centre of G to D string at saddle 17.44mm And I have just reweighed the bass and sorry to those of you who PM'd asking me to do so, it is still 5kg. I was wondering whether the scales were crap so weighed the TRB6, which is far bigger (56mm at the nut and 20mm spacing), but that weighed in at 4.3kgs. The vagaries of wood I guess I will say that I don't find the fiver heavy (it's certainly lighter than my old Wal which I really had to grapple with. Having said this I do own a mid 70's Strat that weighs in at 4.3 kgs, the same as the TRB6, so perhaps I'm just a real man

Hi folks Back at home so some details, apologies for the delay Weight (tested and retested albeit on bathroom scales) is exactly 5kgs, which I'd guess isn't too bad for a fiver and is considerably lower than is the case with my TRB6 Width at nut is a rather Kylie-esque 44mm (I've played 4 strings with wider necks) Width at 12th fret 66mm String spacing at bridge is 17mm I can only find one knock on it, it's in the usual tip of headstock position, and at about 1mm is too small to photograph. I couldn't see it but could feel it when I ran my hand over the finish. This is, as I said above, a lot of bass for the money. I've had a few offers for the 6 even though I haven't listed it so if this doesn't go quickly I may sell the 6 instead, if only because whilst I prefer the 6 for noodling, I suspect that live the 5 will be more useful. Cheers Chris
Brilliant basses - had one for a few years until I made the decision to go back to 4 strings. Build quality is right up there and the amount of tones that are available is unbelievable. They'll do anything well and the piezo adds a subtle extra dimension (or not so subtle if you boost the piezo volume right up). Gives it an acoustic type vibe. GLWTS. I would have this if I was after a 5 string. They really don't get much better.
Thanks Mr Zed, you're making me want to keep it even more
Hi Beedster. Please what is the weight? Year of birth? Thanks. Vilem
Hi Vilem, I'll confirm exact weight once I'm back home Chris
There are some other photos of the bass from my September Ebay listing here (should still be visible): http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1560.l2649. If you hover over they are a reasonable size. I can testify to it being a fabulous bass, bought from The Bass Gallery and one owner until I sold to Beedster, who by the way is a top bloke to do business with. If I had the money I'd buy it back.
Ed, hope all's well and thanks so much for linking to the ebay listing. I've attached those pics below also, hope that when folks click on them they come up larger than those in the first post

If you're basing your decision about cabs - especially on one cab cutting through and another not - on one soundcheck, I'd spend a bit of time checking out various cabs in various bands in various spaces. The two latter variables make a massive difference, and whilst it seems reasonable to suggest that in the one situation in which you've tested your gear a brighter cab might do the job better, you might find a brighter cab not to your liking in others.
Can't see how there would be a monopoly with physical cash though?
The move from the barter economy to cash probably turned banks/governments into the most effective/successful monopolies possible
Sorry but is possible to have more big pics?
I'll post some when I'm back at home in a day or so, although the same pics in the original listing here http://basschat.co.u..._fromsearch__1. seem to open a little larger Cheers Chris
The thing is that sellers only pay for their buyers to use PayPal because it's what they want to use in a lot of cases. If PayPal didn't always side with the buyer, it would be throwing business out the window. Because no matter what, the seller is going to use PayPal for the buyer's sake, so it's the buyer that's the important part of the transaction, because if they're happy, sellers don't have much choice in the matter.
It's called business! Same with credit cards, and probably at some point in the past, hard cash
Sellers use it because it enables a lot of people to buy their goods who couldn't do do otherwise. Like it or not it's a convenient way to pay for items. It has its downside fees being one and yes it does side with the buyer. I've come off second best once or twice as a seller but as a buyer the protection it has given me has more than paid for that.
I think that's the truth of it. Furthermore it's a selling tool, and part of the psychology of it being a sellers tool is that by protecting the buyer it encourages more buyers to use it. Therefore, and perhaps counter-intuitively, by being buyer friendly - and therefore increasing the confidence of buyers in using the service - it's also a more effective seller's tool (more buyers = more sales). So it's actually a win-win. The only downside is that Paypal makes it very easy to buy stuff I shouldn't be buying - seriously, where would BC be without Paypal We can rant about individual scenarios, but like so many other things we rant about, we're better off with them than without.
cheap as the proverbial!
Yes and no Luke! Low price for sure, but then I was lucky when I bought it and am passing that on. There's nothing at all cheap about the bass though. Yammies generally represent outstanding value for money, so the list price for these - at around £2,500 - speaks volumes for just how good the Japanese TRBs are.

My walk-to-gig-rig. Looks great, sounds great, and I can happily walk a couple of miles with bass on back, cab in left hand, head in right. Handles are doing fine

Weighs a ton but does the job (this is the heavier of the two options for Ric), especially if like so many Ric owners you've found intonation up the neck a problem. Definitely adds some weight to both the bass and the tone. Adjusts both longways and sideways. Vey good condition, all threads OK. Selling as I've reverted to my original Ric bridge.

Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Guys, thanks so much for the above posts. I spent a couple of hundred on parts for this and then realised that I was never going to get the time to do the work so bought an SLB-100 and have listed the EUB project for sale at http://basschat.co.u...fs-eub-project/ Should make a really nice EUB project for someone. Chris EDIT in fact it's a little embarrassing that I completely forgot I'd posted this thread given the very generous offers above. Guys, please accept my sincere thanks and huge apologies for having not responded. -
I bought this rather intriguing EUB body, bridge and tailpiece a while back with a view to putting together a rather unique EUB. I spent a further circa £200 on parts from Thomann and Caswells strings (listed below), sourced an old Kent Armstrong Mag PUP and..... Realised I just don't have the time to do this properly and bought an SLB-100! Here's the body So, the parts are (used) I x large black EUB body very similar to an SLB-100 in feel and weight (it is big) 1 x black bridge 1 x black tailpiece 1 x Kent Armstrong mag neck-mounted PUP The following from Thomann (new) 001.00 RUBNER DOUBLE BASS MACHINES 4-STRING for 4/4 -3/4 doublebasses, single machines, French style, nickel-plated, complete set of 4 machines. order code: 257587, amount: 1 pc(s) 002.00 GEWA ENDPIN DOUBLE BASS STANDARD metal rod, 8mm diameter, 33cm length, plywood endpin cone with diameter 28mm to 26mm. order code: 246528, amount: 2 pc(s) 003.00 GEWA TAILGUT FOR DOUBLE BASS 3/4 Nylon. A stunning bass in every respect, and certainly one of the best basses I've owned (and another step in my re-discovery of Yamaha basses). Pretty much every tone you'd want is on tap from the 3-band active circuit, two humbuckers and piezo, it does everything from Ric clank through 'Ray funk to Motown P-Bass thump to jazzy upright. The neck is fast and lovely to hold, the action perfect, the bass balances beautifully, and the instrument as a whole just oozes class. So why am I selling it? Well I always had this nagging feeling that if you're going to play a five you might as well go the whole hog and get a six, so I am now the proud owner of a TRB5 and a TRB6. I'd like to keep them both and even considered defretting one, or stringing one with flats and one with rounds, but I think the sensible approach is to let one of them go, much as I'd rather not. Original listing at http://basschat.co.u..._fromsearch__1. The bass is in extremely good condition and is everything you'd expect from what is Yamaha's flagship bass (and having owned the BB2024 I can vouch for the fact that this bass is a serious step up from even that). Original Yamaha hard case included. This is a LOT of bass for the money, and having recently been discontinued (a strange decision given their reputation), this bass will only increase in value. No trade offers please.
I have sometimes paid extra, to cover the fee and ensure the seller gets the full amount, and that way be protected.
I do the same
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it all have a F on the headstock and hence carry that heritage... and the guys working on them are luthiers to to the stars. It all adds to that warm cosy feeling.
Although the stars in question tend to play non-Fenders on recordings and even on stage (mentioning no names).........
So what alternative is there to a Fender Custom Shop if you want a period correct bass? I know of Limelight but what else is on off short of buying an actual 60s bass?
Depends what you mean by period correct. With a few exceptions Fender basses really haven't evolved much in 50 years and those that have tend to be the less sought after examples. MIJ '62 RIs tend to be a good bet although prices are going up rapidly
-
My opinion on Fenders, from £300 second hand Mexican models right up to the Custom Shop models, is that you have to try the actual bass you are thinking about buying. There are absolute gems and absolute dogs at every price point.
Yep, I've owned six CS models and numerous recent MIA AV, MIJ etc as well as three pre- CBS and several 60's and 70's Fenders. The variability is huge and indicative of consistently awful QC. Only way to buy a Fender is to play it first. A custom order from CS is to my mind nothing more than a foolish gamble.

Fender Jap prices have gone through the roof recently, because as most accept, Jap built basses are extremely good. However Fender Jap's reputation was built on basses equal in quality and aesthetics to their US equivalents but at a much lower price. Fender Jap are good, but they are still Fenders. At the prices they're being sold for these days, there are to my mind far better options, many of which are also made in Japan and the far east but without the cache of the Fender logo.
