The man! Not only did he sell me a rather lovely piece of kit, but he delivered it in person. From Holland! Could have talked for hours about [s]kids, sleepless nights, bed wetting[/s] our rock'n'roll lifestyles. Top guy in every respect and highly recommended. Chris
I haven't bought anything from Clarky recently, but his contribution to this forum is very much missed and I wish he'd come back!
+1

He's at it again...Vintage Marlin Content :)
Beedster replied to Chiliwailer's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I hear '80 was a good year at Marlin, equivalent to '62 at Fullerton? -
Steve arrived at my place yesterday and rather unkindly left with my Wal. OK, he did pay me for it, but even so..... All joking aside, Steve's a top bloke to deal with. We had a decent chat about mutual friends, GAS, the music business generally, and most importantly of all, of Steve Coogan's great bit of air fretless bass playing in the trailer episode of I'm Alan Partridge (we agreed the air bass in question was most likely a Wal). All this while my daughters did their absolute best to interrupt, ask daft questions and break the (rather delicate) Wal case. Top guy, top bassist, deal with confidence. Chris

'83 Wal Mk 1 for under £2,000 anyone? **SOLD**
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Turns out the worries about financial constraints were quite well founded!... If it weren't the case though, I'd have this back in a heartbeat! Incredible bass, beautiful sound and feel, really one of the best basses I've played. I want it back, but I can't afford it Are you sure you want to let this go again Chris!?...
And they won't get any better for a while mate, my three girls are like an economic black hole, sucking in huge quantities of economic energy and turning it instantaneously into something so incredibly small that it is almost impossible to discern its very existence. Stretching the analogy a little, that black hole then appears to pull in all other financial resources! The only way I've kept some decent gear is by maintaining a 'one in/one out gear fund and doing everything through PayPal so that no-one is tempted to say "we could spend that on a holiday" But you know what, the fact that I can let a Wal go in part to fund the girls' holiday this year says it all, there's nothing better. Hope all goes smoothly with yours mate. And this lovely Wal is sold pending the usual folks -
'83 Wal Mk 1 for under £2,000 anyone? **SOLD**
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Folks, a quick head's up, if you're interested in this please read the background to the bass in the thread here http://basschat.co.u...l/page__st__90., specifically posts 83-85 which detail the work carried out by Paul Hermann at Wal, and also show before shots (horrifying) and after shots (lovely)! Cheers Chris -
'83 Wal Mk 1 for under £2,000 anyone? **SOLD**
Beedster replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Thanks Martin. Folks, the guy who bought this bass in January received two bits of good news the same week, the first was his first Wal, the second his first child! So, aware of imminent financial constraints, he offered it back and I, missing it, bought it back Ultimately however, whilst I'd love to keep it, it's been here pretty much unplayed for three months - I have three other fretless basses, an EUB and a DB, so I'm not without options. I'd prefer collection from Canterbury or meet-up in the SE area, but I'm sure we can sort things if that's a problem. No trades thanks Chris -
Hell yes, been doing that for years, I've a few on the go at present here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/278884-so-many-projects-so-little-time/page__fromsearch__1, most parts of which (with some obvious exceptions) were bought on here, in fact one of those exceptions was in fact bought on here but back in the old days

ALLPARTS Jazz Bass Neck
Beedster replied to biro's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Is that definitely an Allparts neck, I've three on various basses and all have exactly the same stamp "Allparts Licensed by Fender" across the heel? I thoughts they were USA also (might be wrong there though)? Either way, good luck with the sale, but might be best to confirm now rather than getting an irate PM after the sale -
Flea's National Anthem at Lakers vs. Jazz
I'm a big fan of RHCP & what he does with them but that was absolutely terrible. Bad tone & bad playing - someone just needs to tell him; you are not Jimi Hendrix, get out there & show them a funky bass version not some rubbish guitar-wannabe trick.
Must admit I was expecting a slapathon -

I gigged my now sadly gone B-15 a while back and was shocked at how loud it was for 25 watts (i had it on 2/10 in quite a big room). I told the new owner this during the sales process and I suspect he was rightfully a little sceptical. That is until he got a dB meter out and tested the B-15 against his 300w Markbass combo. And alongside the substantial improvement in tone associated with the B-15 (his words not mine), guess how many dBs were in it............?
1. 'sell anything' forum is unlocked so that anyone can view it. It's currently locked to members only for some reason, which undoubtably doesn't help.
No, because that way non bass players looking for a lawn mower, iPad or horse will see the ads and join to buy them, and we can then kiss goodby to the trust among musicians element of this forum that is a tangible factor in it's continued success

Flea's National Anthem at Lakers vs. Jazz
Beedster replied to bluesparky's topic in General Discussion
At last there's something I can play better than Flea I reckon he might have let the occasion get the better of him, he looks genuinely nervous at times, and that's certainly not an emotion I've ever associated with him. There's a couple of nice things in there but they just didn't come off, especially in the context of the 13-yr old jamming in their bedroom feel of the rest of it. -

Way Down ... disappointment of the year
OK, imagine that book by that driver, only it doesn't actually centre on the cars and the driving ... it centres on the car he learned to drive in, and the driving instructor, and the different types of cars that existed when he was a teenager, and the amount he was drinking while driving celebrities around. The only reason that you know he was actually the actual guy who drove Les Dawson to his epochal meeting with Ronald Reagan is because you read about it somewhere else ...
Ha ha, fair enough Jack -
In fairness, my problem was always with the description of the book on the cover, which implied that the book was going to be about playing bass with Elvis, The Doors and Bob Dylan. It wasn't. I still reckon Jerry has another book inside him.
Yeh, but imagine a book by a celebrity chauffeur who drives movie stars, politicuans etc that centred on the cars, druving etc? -
I really liked this book. It's not a book about being a bass player cos, well, no-one would buy it.
Exactly, too many bassists assume that when a bass player writes a book or gives an interview it should be about basses, gear, technique etc. -
Sold to Andy my Fender Custom Shop 64 Jazz - a pleasure to deal with - prompt communications throughout and hassle free transaction. Deal with Andy with total confidence!
Ha ha, I was fortunate enough to be on the other end of that deal so to speak, that is I bought the bass from Andy that enabled him to buy Azumi's Jazz. Andy was an absolute gent and put up with a LOT of PMs on this particular deal. He was also extremely helpful when the courier did what couriers all too often do with expensive basses! Andy's been on BC a long time and having kept an eye on what he's played over the years it's clear he knows a good bass when he sees one. He's also a pleasure to deal with and an all-round asset to BC.
Yes you're right. Sorry. I think I worded my post badly.
Ha ha, we've all done it mate
Which at the time were expensive, aspirational and cutting edge instruments.
As they still are, which was exactly my point. And given this, and in the context of the OP, it's worth noting that the majority of the most rxpensive basses you'll find for sale anywhere today are pre-CBS Fenders So Mustang Sally was likely recorded on what was then, and still is now, an aspirational and expensive bass
-
Original recording of Mustang Sally was probably cut using Pre CBS Fenders by the way

Musician wanted ads do not represent the full range of what bassists do, neither does gigging for that matter.
