1. OP wants trebley/clanky and not one reply has suggested "get a Ric". What's wrong with this place these days
2.
I had the pleasure of seeing Beedster use this at a gig last night, and was genuinely shocked at how loud and full it sounded at the back of a decent sized hall. I was even more shocked when Chris told me the volume control was set on 2! I don't know how they do it, but I now know I want one!
Thanks Jay, it was good to see you, kudos on your playing and band mate. Yes, it was the first time I'd gigged the Ampeg and it was surprisingly loud wasn't it (which meant of course that everyone could clearly hear my crap DB playing)! That was also the first time I'd had to carry it up any stairs, and I guess the answer to your question of 'how do they do it' is 'they do it by using extremely high quality and bloody heavy components'. It works out at 2kg weight per watt! Thank god there's only 25 of them. I guess it makes you realise that watts mean pretty much nothing in real terms; I struggled to be heard with a 250w Phil Jones Super Flightcase in that same room a few years back, it had neither the grunt or the tone of the B-15 despite being rated at 6-times the watts. I'd stil love to keep this and won't be too upset if it doesn't sell, but I doubt it's going to get much use and I could use the money to buy more studio gear
3.
Nice story, but I seriously doubt that it was "the country's one & only Fairlight". There were quite a few people using Fairlights in the UK by that time, Geoff Downes had two of his own in 1982, Thomas Dolby had one, Gabriel was using them. Gabriel actually owned the company that sold them in the UK (Syco Systems, which used to be in Paddington).
Yep, I was st LCF doung electronic music technology 81-84 and we had one. I seem to remember student demonstrations such as the national anthem sung by dogs! Syco Systems, that's a trip down memory lane, one of my classmates/fellow musicians worked there. Really exciting time to be doing music although so much if it sounds so synthetic to my ear now.
4. Long shot but I find myself in urgent need! Ideally used. Loan or purchase works, but I need them for Sunday! As I said, long shot! C
5.
Seriously, she's clearly a great singer, but to my ears the vibrato just sounds forced. I can't help thinking how great it would be if she sang it straight(er).
That's my view on most of the current crop of vocalists. I've always felt that excessive vibrato, whilst a sign of having mastered a specific technique and on that basis often taken as a sign of musical talent, simply covers up a lack of core tone. OK it's a widely used method for sure, and has real benefits in smoothing things over in choral singing and orchestral/ensemble playing, but I'll take a voice (or a fiddle or fretless bass) without vibrato over the same with vibrato any day.
6. Outstanding work, well done
7. Hey Alex, I may have the solution so have PM'd
8. Overall you'll save £50 over Thomann price https://m.thomann.de/gb/mesa_boogie_subway_d_800.htm
9. Doubt it will work out cheaper after taxes, duty etc, plus is it UK power supply?
10. Aggie sold, B-15 withdrawn for a while
11. I doubt you'll get a better active fretless for that price
12.
get a card reader and take card payments with the jug
Yep
13. Be quick if you want either of these, about to get out the CC to pay for something and once that's done, the urgency to sell is gone and the prices will go back up to what they should be
14. Thanks Karl Well I have now met this bass. Crikey it's light, it kinda drifted out of the case when I opened it! It also has a glorious neck, and sustains very very nicely. The finish is nothing like as bad as I had expected and from more than a foot away it looks like a 10 year old bass, which of course, it is (2007 BTW). Anyway, long story short, I was selling this cheap to pay for some studio gear that I subsequently had to put on CC after some interesting PayPal shenanigans last night! So, I'm in neither any rush to sell, and certainly not to sell at a loss given this bass is worth a couple of hundred more at least, so I'm going to withdraw it and relist it at its original purchase price of £700 when I get around to it. Thanks folks Chris
15. I'll take offers on these for the next day or so and then if they don't sell probably pay for the new studio gear on the CC and hang on to these lovely rigs a while longer. C
16.
I'm very tempted to get Mr Peterbuilt to build me a nice P. ... to be honest though in an ideal world, I'd like my old Jap P back that I sold on here a couple of years ago
Personally I think there should be a one-day BC Amnesty, during which we all have the right to get back any bass we used to own.
17. Folks, just to clarify I've never held this bass! Re weight, as I understand it from Jay, it's 'daft light' at around 8lbs. Re finish, Karl thought it rough but Jay appears to think it just looks a little reliced. Re year of manufacture, no idea, sorry. Karl's original link is here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/274529-traded-thanks-fender-american-vintage-57-precision-reissue-bargain-but/page__hl__av+57__fromsearch__1 I don't make a habit of selling basses I've never touched or seen. Luck has it that musical priorities have changed substantially from live to recorded over the last few months and the need (want) for this bass came at the very tail end of the former, hence the rather odd back story and rather short turnaround. I also enjoy a good project and this was going to be stripped and oiled and a P-Retro dropped into the cavity. However, I've since decided to sell off all of my project instruments also (that's going to be avery long thread), so omn both counts this is on its way. So, I can't really speak for this bass. Usual rules apply though, if you buy it and there's a problem, I will either solve the problem or you get a refund. I know Jay well, and whilst I've never met Karl his reputation suggests a high level of trustworthiness. In short, if these guys rate this bass, I can't see there being a problem. If I can get any firmer answers when I actually pick up the bass this week, I will! Chris

21. See link for original sale here http://basschat.co.u..._fromsearch__1. I bought and paid for this bass about three weeks ago. Not only have I not played it, but I've not even collected it (my fault, not Jay's). However in the meantime both the expense and time required to get my Manshed studio up and running is dawning, so this bass, which I was going to strip and do all sorts of things to (there was a pre-amp lined up also), is now back on the market at £100 below what I paid Jay. £600 for a US AV series bass? 22.
+1 As I said earlier today on his Ampeg for sale thread, Chris is too generous for his own good. And here he is again, proving that fact even more vociferously.. Can only echo and underline what's already been said about Chris, he is a true gent and a Basschat legend. He also really knows his stuff, so any piece of bass gear passing through his hands will be absolutely top draw. And this very lovely Wal will be no exception!
Nik, that's really kind of you mate. Bottom line is that BC gives us all the opportunity to try, own, and trade in gear that otherwise many of us would never have had the chance to own, and whilst I buy and sell a lot, it's always with that in mind. If I have good gear, it's because I've bought it from other guys on here with equally good taste and expertise. I grew up in the '70s, and it took months to save enough cash to buy an awful Satellite Precision copy. I used to dream of Fenders and Musicmans until Mick Karn came along with a sound and vibe so extraordinary that the Wal thing haunted me until I had anough cash to buy one about 30 years later. Having owned the two I've had recently has been a real pleasure, almost an honour given their history and provenance, but deep down with a move to recording over live work, I just prefer good old fashioned passive single PUP instruments. But I will miss it
23. Lots' of PMs re re-fretting this bass, please keep in mind that as it is it's a wonderful fretless bass
24. Thanks for the above comments folks. I'm about to reply to PMs. Chris
