[/quote] Interesting idea Owen, but the PUPs would surely have to be extremely close together to get a decent PBass tone (even reversing the order of the two PBass PUPs so that the treble side is closer to the bridge than the bass side makes a substantial difference to the tone)? Will having them that close give you sufficient separation for the J-PUPs to give a true J-Bass tone. I guess what I'm asking is whether it allow any of the PUPs to sit in their respective sweet spot? Having said the above, who's making them for you, I'd like to see how they look? C

    Thanks for your input folks. I've given this project - especially the PUPs - a lot of thought, and I've come to the conclusion that I need one thing and one thing only, versatility OK, joking aside, what I want tone-wise now may not be what I want tone-wise in 5 years or even next year, so I will be essentially looking for 2 PUPs Active circuit Wal-like aesthetic (i.e., humbuckers, ideally black) Relatively low cost (£400 total) Thoughts? C

    The more I think about this....... Cockups and equipment failure, fair enough. Lying to a customer about what they were doing with his legal property, property that he had every right to expect was being legitimately repaired under warranty but which was in fact being repaired by someone who may not only invalidate that warranty but - if the fret story is anything to go by - could leave an unsafe piece of electrical equipment.......     I'm in the lucky situation of having bought a mutant fretless Wal that I'm going to fix up/restore to my own specifications, likely with an East pre-amp although I'm undecided about PUPs. I loved my old MK1 to play but wasn't the greatest fan of the tone, which was to my ear a little synthetic. Perhaps I simply never got to grips with the pre-amp?

I want to stay 'clean' for ever; my KT88s will not break up at any humanly-sustainable level. I don't play that loud, of course, I just have headroom to the sky. For 'grit' I would use pedals. Be sure of what you're really after. If you want 'clean', then 200w is magnificent. If you want o/p valve 'grit', then 200w will cause physical damage to buildings in the vicinity, and lasting damage to ears. Subject to correction, completion and/or contradiction from others. Even my current 100w Ampeg is way too loud for nearly any small-medium venue clean, let alone when it gets gritty C

[/quote] Yep THE 200 valve watts for 500 solid state watts suggested above is perhaps a bit crude, I've played 600w of solid state that wouldn't get anywhere near my 100w of Ampeg tubes. Speaker efficiency is a big part of the equation. C

I've promised another BCer that I'll take some further pics tonight, so I'll weigh it at the same time. As I suggested above, I defy anyone to be genuinely disappointed by this bass. Selling this is allowing me to keep my '78 Fretless guilt free (I'm sure you know what I mean), which al things considered, is the best path for me. I appear to fall into that rare category of bass players who, for whatever reason, not only prefer to play fretless but are actually more skilled on fretless than fretted (Jaco was another. This is, trust me, the only thing Jaco and I have in common. Far from suggesting that I'm a genius fretless player, it's in truth indicative of the fact that my fingers seem to find their way around frets with about as much ease as the average England striker find his way around a German defence). My loss = your gain blah blah blah

[/quote] Ain't that the truth, I know that bass forums exist to allow folks to talk bass, and I know that most discussions go around in circles to an extent and then reappear in new guise down the road, but this is largely just dull. So what if player A has a roadie and doesn't understand why player B values lightweight gear, so what if player C values aesthetics and doesn't understand how player D could take to the stage with anything but a design classic. I think Luke's post (113) was spot on though so perhaps this thread is useful after all

    Loosen the capo slightly? Tighten it slightly? Try slightly heavier gauge strings? Learn to play the piece without the capo?

    I'm doing a lot of thinking about this! I've decided to hang onto my '78 maple board fretless Precision which has the flatwound P-Bass retro thing covered. PUP-wise on the Wal I'm going to be looking for an active option likely with rounds in mind. I'm tempted to go for a single MM-style humbucker at the bridge and an East circuit, or possibly an HS. Thoughts?

    Thanks Nik, had a lot of PMs about this case, mostly saying I'd be an idiot to sell it even if the Wal in question is something of a mongrel so the case is withdrawn for the time being whilst I work out what I'm going to do with its contents C
