^ I'm thinking exactly the same as you guys Definitely a few alarm bells ringing. While I'm here, what you think of this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390717718808 ...? It looks legit to my untrained eyes - by then I don't know much! I'm thinking about starting a parts-build project next year and wondering whether this would be a good purchase - or not. Let me know what you think.
No, Firstly our US cousins get very sweaty about vintage Fenders and they often attract higher prices there than here. Second, courier fees, VAT and import duty will be high, third you have no idea if it's legit, fourth if it's not legit or crap you have a nightmare returning it (US retail law varies from state to state and this can effects your rights even with an eBay transaction), and last it's a horrible refin anyway? Get Bas Doc to make you a nice ash precision body for half the price.

Those of you who've noticed my ability to buy and sell Jazzes perhaps know that I love the tone but don't like the thin necks and clumsy body shape. Several years ago I also bought a Wal MK1 fretless and whilst I loved the feel and playability, I resented the length time it took me to find usable tones amongst the unusable ones and always found even the tones I used a little synthetic to my ears. So there I was taking 5 minutes out of writing a paper last week and noodling eBay and up pops the below. Ugly as hell, in fact I dread to think what stories it could tell of its miseries at the hands of late 80's and early 90's luthiers, but it has the essence of the bits of Jazz I like and he bit of Wals I like. If you're squeemish, look away now........... The original frets have been filed down to the board (!!!), the PUPs/circuit removed and replaced with some early 90's SDs with switches on the PUPs, and a monstrous piece of pale wood has been used to cover the work to the body. But, it sounds OK, plays well and as I've always found with Wals, feels beautiful. I've spoken to both the Bass Doc and Martin Simms about what can be done, and at present, given it was originally fretted, I'm torn between.... Neck: refretting the original neck and having a fretless matching neck made with an ebony board (I guess I could sell on the fretted neck to pay for the fretless as I'm really after a fretless bass here), or alternatively having an ebony board put on this neck PUPs: installing some passive J-PUPs (Lollar or similar) or going the whole hog and installing some Simms Super Quads. Either way, something is going to have to be done about the pale rectangle of wood around the PUPs. I paid what I consider to be over the odds (but which others seem to think was a bargain) price wise, so as the deal involved a very nice Wal case I'm going to sell that separately to help pay for the work on the bass. However it works out it'll be a nice and unique instrument that meets my needs, I just can't decide which way to go at present. I'll keep y'all posted

Price is always too good to be true until the auction finishes, plus it's a refin, plus even given that there's no clear evidence that it is what the seller says it is. I'm not saying it isn't, just that this is a real case of buyer beware, without some evidence it's just a piece of wood with some paint on it

check out 'Love Stinks' in The Wedding Singer, the best rendition of a love song ever. It'll bring the house down one way or another -
Bargain of the month! Is it too wet for you in North Wales Chris?
Too far from home, friends and family Keith. Love it here but miss too much of the important things in life to stay
Chris, Well the only thing I know about the Canterbury music scene is this bunch: http://www.folkinthebarn.co.uk Might be worth getting in touch. Phil
Thanks Phil, I've played with a few of the guys who gig there regularly. Canterbury's very folk at present

What it says above really? Any other suggestions? Thanks Chris

Hiya Sean, good to hear from you, all's well mate, hope all's OK with you. I dropped my iPhone and smashed the screen today so pics will have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest. To my eye it's more Fender Bassman than Ampeg, to my ear pure Ampeg, just subtract 80% of the weight of either EDIT: I'm not 100% sure I'd want to put a Bass 400+ on top of it though. It would sound awesome for sure, but in that case it would probably make the rig quite top heavy? -
More switches than a space shuttle!!!
Beedster replied to Ghost Rider's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Well it's £600 with an hour or so to go so is potentially a decent deal for anyone looking for something like this. Despite its looks I really like it, but am a little over-encumbered with basses one way or another. Saturday night finish before the pubs close is never a good way to secure a high price -
Absolutely love this and if there was any chance of me playing long-scale or fretless, I'd snap it up. One of the very few basses currently on BC that's under-priced (IMO of course)...and from one of our most respected members. This has got to be a winner for somebody
Thanks Loz, that's very kind of you. It's a lovely bass but I've just put it back in its case and it's going under the bed for a while. I'm going to have a think about whether I sell it, gig it, or keep it as an investment for 20 years time

Thanks guys, PM replied, and very happy to send this via courier. Don't get me wrong, as Roland and Billy have pointed out, this is a great cab and I'm still very tempted to keep it, even though it'll probably get two outings per year. However, we have a big very house here and we won't have quite that luxury when we move back south, so this is on the hit-list so to speak. I'm not going to lose any sleep if it doesn't sell though -

I try to sell things for what I believe they're worth not for what I can get for them, but I recently bought a Wal fretless that's going to need a bit of work and which was perhaps a little overpriced, so I did so with the intention of selling the case to pay for some of the work. £200 is ludicrous for a case but it appears to be ballpark for Wal cases on eBay. It's fur lined, chocolate brown leathery look, all latches and handle are working. It housed a mid-80's Mk1. Pics on their way, dropping my iPhone and breaking the screen whilst taking pics of it earlier has no doubt added a few hundred quid to the overall cost of the Wal!

Hi folks, many thanks for the comments (and Phil, thanks for the offer of contacts, we're moving back to our old stomping ground of Canterbury). The beast sold to a gentleman in - appropriately enough - Leeds within about 20 seconds of having been listed last night. I'll reply to PM's later when I'm back at home Cheers Chris

I think it's more about the amplification than the PUP to be honest. I've owned every P-PUP out there and the differences between all of them are tiny as compared to the differences between amps and cabs C

Stonking bass that's leaving the herd ahead of a move back to England and the associated need to free up both money and space. Original listing at http://basschat.co.u..._fromsearch__1. This is an extremely light and extremely resonant instrument that really is not all that far off any of the pre-CBS Precisions I've owned. It now had original Fender ashtrays that add hugely to the vintage vibe. I'll post some pics of these over the weekend. C
Only surprising not to see Ian Dowie in that line-up Ps, looks like a ridic bargain, Beedster. the bridge and strings make up half or more of your price. Someone have this fast
Interestingly The Beast's early 70's Leeds Utd credentials are good. We did a festival a few years back. I left The Beast on its side at the back of the stage, where in true Hunter/Bremner-esque fashion it tripped and upended the soundguy, very nearly breaking his ankle. A few more details, it's a biggish 3/4, flatback, E flat stop, ply construction, and built like a tank. It's loud and projects well, and having used it with a number of PUPs and mics it amplifies very well without significant feedback issues. It will need to be collected from me in or near Aber. At the price it's worth the journey.

It's with a heavy heart that I sell this old thing. Uglier than the Leeds United team of the early 70's and about as subtle, it has does however posses a number of charms, not least of which is that for bluegrass and similar I'd guess it's pretty much unbeatable. It was the DB on which I started, and one that several people have fallen in love with for reasons I certainly can't explain (it is in fact known as 'The Beast' among my friends). It had a setup last year and had an adjustable bridge fitted. We're moving back down to the south east and two DBs will be a luxury in terms of space that I simply can't afford so it has to go soonish. I'll stick some decent strings on for you also. C
